I step outside after a week of being in cold and being like “33 isn’t bad.” Whereas on day 1, I’m like this sucks. Heat on day 1 or 20 I’m still miserable.
Is this the same as being a more general “I prefer cold” person? Or is this acclimation a distinct and different angle in some way? Cuz I’m used to the “I prefer cold” discussion (and prepare to do war with 🤣), but the wording of “acclimate” has me intrigued!
Well i’ll give u creds for this for having grown up in cold wx climate in the Northeast but having spent a winter in Great Lakes region i would beg to differ
I worked outside for 20 years. I will take winter any day over high humidity and 95 degrees. It's a lot easier to warm up, than to try and cool down. I really need to move to Oregon and live close to the beach. 😊
I think it depends on your lungs. I feel like it's harder to breathe cold, dry air than hot, humid air. But I say that having lived on the Gulf Coast during college years. Dew points above 82 or so become a problem for me, too. (Come to Omaha corn fields and get both.)
Well, heat kills more than cold. I think it is also, to a point, easier to mitigate cold... Good clothing etc.. when it gets real hot there is only a certain amount you can do. (ie agree)
I grew up in central California with lots and lots of heat and had no issue adapting to Midwest and then northern plains winters. I'll take the tundra any day over heat lol.
I’ve lived in both extremes for decades. I can tell you from experience that they both suck after a long enough time. It’s easier to function in heat b/c there’s no snow/ice/cold to inhibit you or your car/equipment and keep you in bed longer than you should be.
Considering the incalculable amount of life teeming in the rainforests of Brazil, versus the abject lack of any life in the barren Antarctic, Mother Nature acknowledges the chosen location for your demise.
When it's 98 and humid I'd argue it's worse for football players etc. They get exhausted extremely quickly and they have to have IV and stuff on the sidelines
I would take 115+ heat index over -40 windchill in a blizzard any day. Being stuck in the house for days on end is a special kind of hell out here in Nebraska.
