Many jobs in Wellington are related to public service activity as well as direct workers. Flow on effect includes small retailers and cafes as well as project workers and contractors. Much government contract work has ended and other possible clients have downsized or aren't hiring.

Ran into one of my former PhD students yesterday (in Welly). Asked what she was doing. Her reply: "Had been working in a government agency, but the entire group was just disestablished." Seems to be a relatively common story under the Dark Triad Coalition.

The loss in positions was about 10k, and even if 1/3 had no incumbent many of these were positions that would have been filled because departments stopped recruiting when they knew slash and burn was coming

I feel for all those that have to pick up the workload from all the laid off staff.
Staff now doing 2,3 or more peoples workload.
The mental issues will start to increase because of this extra workload 😔

Not sure - here's the regional data from the CSV file. The total matches the stats reports. Are you using filled jobs (people living in place X) instead of filled jobs - workplace-based (jobs located in place X)?

Other thing to note is that this doesn't look like a quirk - consistent drops for last 4 qtrs in welly, not out of keeping with previous years. Compare with glitch in Central Otago (probably payroll head office moving there)

Yes, the 11% drop is workplace-based (as per graph refs) so will def include people who work for Welly orgs but live outside Welly. I was one of those people for years (but orgs spent $ on me staying here a few days a month!)
Stats NZ have had lots of questions from Brad, me, etc.
