Undoubtedly there is a variety of reasons, demand for temporary workers, country quotas, etc. It's absolutely worth noting though we used to be on one of the expedited applications a couple of years ago with a wait time of about 8 to 10 weeks.

From the info I can find the current backlog is high, but not exceptional for temporary residency. Actually appears to have dropped the last 2 months on record Jan and Feb. and not nearly significant enough to make it go from a handful of months to well over a year looking at historical records.

This is why Brazil is reimplementing a visa requirement for visitors from the US, Canada and Australia on April 10. Requirements for a visa were lifted for the US in 2019 by Jair "I tried to overthrow an election" Bolsonaro, but a reciprocal action didn't happen here.

I mean if I was Canada, I wouldn't want us there. If things get worse, Canada is going to have a lot of asylum seekers coming to them. I live not far from the Canadian border, my wife works for a Canada-based company. If things get worse, we're getting the fuck out of here.

Not that I know of, unless you fall into one of the very small lists of highly sought after skills. Typically an employer will have to do a round of Canadian candidates, then be able to apply for a skilled-worker exception.

Woah. I forget exactly how long it took for me to get my initial work permit to come to Canada but it was quick.

In fact, I think I got it same day when I went through immigration at Toronto airport?

I don’t know how long it took for background stuff up to that point, and I did have a job offer.

Sounds about right actually. I remember the UVic immigration consultant talking about NAFTA/USCMA.

But dang, that’s still super long. I got permanent residency in less time than it would take for an American to get an open work permit.

It's pretty variable. It was about that long for USians when I was looking at work permit guidelines for Canada in August '24. It's way quicker if you can prove savings or a job offer and have an advanced degree

FWIW those are processing times for a TEMPORARY RESIDENCE / WORK PERMIT without special qualifications.
Maybe they are prioritizing other applications across the board.
Has there been a rush of applicants from the US (not a surprise if so)
