Canada is slashing its order of F-35 fighters from 88 to not more than 32. It will re-invest the billions saved to purchase 60 or more Swedish Saab Gripen E/F-39's. The USA is no longer a trustworthy ally. Simply.

Is this confirmed? Also, it should have been Rafale or Typhoon to get 100% non USA. Gripen engines are manufactured in Massachusetts. Kinda risky. Better than nothing?
Given that we can just turn off the software in them, whether they like it or not, I'm not sure why they're buying one. We voted for this, we fucked our friends, and now we're gonna own it. If there's a republican on the planet I'd save from a burning building, tell me who, because I can't find one
Portugal cancelled, 🇨🇦 should too. Win-win as the Swedish jets are preferred AND they offered assembly+maintenance in 🇨🇦! If we’re reading labels on lettuce, why boost the 🇺🇸 defence industry by billions & be at their mercy for parts + a “kill switch” as they threaten to annex us? Let’s align more w/EU
But Canada help pay for the development of the F-35’s since it’s a joint strike fighter. They have a right to them. NATO needs to file a breach of contract against the US since we are no longer reliable.
Not much of a “joint strike fighter” if we’re paying tens of billions of $’s, boosting their defence industry while they threaten to annex, at the mercy of maintenance in the US (even more $ to their defence), a reported “kill switch” etc. While the Swedish jets are preferred & safer in every way.
I'd think if a kill switch is a concern, then either disabling the hardware associated with receiving firmware upgrades or trying to reverse engineer the firmware would be a good idea.
We have a lot of smart 🇨🇦 engineers who likely do reverse engineering for a living.
In theory, yes. But there are tons of computer systems on that plane which talk to each other. There are numerous ways in which code can interfere and make the whole operating system go limp, and anyone with any computer savvy would have an impossible challenge in finding those codes
It'll certainly be a huge challenge. And depending on whether any communication system is encrypted data being exchanged or if it's open would certainly add to the complexity.
It really boils down to the design of each system and how complex it is.
Well, yes. But unlike the US, Canada remains a "rules-based" country that abides by contracted agreements and copyrights. Better to just get from a more reliable ally
Not a lawyer, but suspect the validity of that move would depend on the language of the contract. Unfortunately, the crowd that runs the US government (Musk excepted) was duly elected. Worth investigating, however!
Canada is reconsidering F-35 order: it's not definitively dumped yet. Defence must be looking into ways to get out of part of the contract, since the first batch can't be cancelled.
🚨 Canada SLASHES F-35 orders from 88 to 32 — and switches to Sweden’s Gripen jets instead. Why? Because the U.S. is no longer a trustworthy ally. America’s influence is fading FAST — and even its closest allies are walking away. SHARE if you see the collapse happening! 👀
It’s reassuring to know it’s seriously being considered. Hopefully, Carney can find a way to get it done. As a taxpayer, I’ll gladly take a fee hit to ensure our air defence works when we need it.
My family and I are living in a tent in Gaza after losing our home due to the war. We are struggling to survive without food, water, or medicine, and any donation, no matter how small, will help us immensely. Please support us through this link: https://gofund.me/05a9a8f0.
The problem is that we have companies which also contribute to building these planes... over $3.3 billion USD in contracts have been awarded to Canadian industry for the development and production of the F-35.
SAAB actually does technology transfers and are willing to let buyers produce the plan partially ot entirely domestically if able to do so, so if anything this should mean more opportunities for Canadian industry.
I read last night that Trump has said he wants to bring all the production back to the USA at the next contract so we're not hurting ourselves if we cancel now. This is just one more sign that they operate in bad faith now. I believe Saab committed to assembling fighters in Canada if we bought them.
The lost revenue for of LM is probably over 50B.... so much winning! Canada won't cancel the first group for contractual reasons. Other allies like UK and others receiving aircraft now will just wait out Trump to see if the cancer destroying the US can be cured.
Grippens use American engines, which is a problem. Also, Canada has (currently) a signed agreement to purchase 32 F-35s. The remaining 54 are best understood as an 'intention to purchase' and so more practically able to be canceled. Sadly, even the hard order for 32 is problematic given US actions.
The world is about to put trump in his place. He doesn't have the cards he thinks he has to play. This isn't cards, it's not a game, trump thinks it is but he's gonna learn
I don’t know why, but that is one good looking fighter jet. Better than anything Lockheed Martin has produced in decades. Not that good looking matters in a fighter, but makes one feel better about it.
Fighter jet purchases are a long-term commitment, requiring spare parts, training and maintenance. Who would make such a commitment with a country who has threatened to invade and destroy the existence of your own country?
Brazil did this in the early 2000’s and was pressured by the U.S. to the point of the Swedish ambassador to the U.S. being called for an explanation. Since Saab was just starting development Brazil became a partner, and Embraer is producing the fighters jointly at their plant in São Paulo.
I don‘t think Putin dares Poland - I fear it would be smaller countries, 3 of them… (it seems to be very cynical to me to have this talk, therefore my rather cryptic approach). I wonder if he would go for the countries between the Black & Caspian Sea - or they‘re not interesting since not in the EU?
Sweden already has a mechanized brigade stationed in one of the Baltic countries.
You wouldn't want to station fighter jets that close to the border. I think they are going to Poznań.
What’s a lie. That Canada is buying non-IS fighter Jets or that the f 35 is a plane that tries to do too many things so it is very expensive to manufacture and keep in the air?
I can only find information (as recent as yesterday) that Canada is “reconsidering”. Since Carney was only sworn in yesterday, this info about cutting the order is suspicious. Source please?
One thing about the Grippen like its older brother the Viggen do not need dedicated runways to carry out its missions just good highways to operate from.
They land at a designated section of the road where their turnaround crew are who refuel, rearm while the pilot is debriefed then briefed on next his next mission.
So it seems then it is a very good choice to include in your Military Toolkit. Also you country is just little bit bigger then Sweden it will mean that dedicated bases aren't required just well keep highways or just even sections of it.
It is an aircraft I would like Aust. to adopt as well.
Even if he back tracks on Tariffs, the friendly feeling towards the US has gone for a very long time, this will have long term consequences and damage the US going forward. The man baby doesn't care though and he doesn't have the intelligence to understand that actions have consequences.
This question should be directed to CEO ,, board of directors and shareholders of Lockheed Martin. They may voted for Trump but they like their profit even more.
Canada would have to pay a penalty for cancelling the remaining contract. Lockheed Martin would have to pay a penalty for failing to maintain the aircraft because that's part of the contract too. Maintenance and overhauls are contracted to be done in the US
It has to do with NORAD capabilities. Because it’s an integrated defence between Canada and the US they require us to fly the same F-35s going forward.
That’s what I’d like to know. Do we really think it’s wise to be purchasing anything from a former ally that is making declarations of war? Does not seem smart. But Bravo for going for Saabs. 👍
The order was made when Harper was in office. This has been a while. The initial order I think is locked, but an order of an additional fifty-odd jets is insecure.
The tariffs are part of it but his threats to Canada are the primary reason why this is happening. Fact is we know the leaders of the US can't be trusted so why buy military equipment from them? It makes no sense.
The US loves war, it's how they make all their money. Off the blood of men and women having to fight the wars. Not to mention how many civilians they murder.
I tried to Google this since you included no references or links. I only found news saying Canada was RECONSIDERING pulling back on their order, as of present. I found nothing saying the decision was made. I would support it however.
I guess this will likely end up killing these aircraft. All these cancellations will increase the cost of the F-35s already ordered, because the cost cannot be recouped otherwise. As that happens, more cancellation will occur, and the current U.S. hostility toward friends won’t help. IMHO
Suggest cancellation of the entire u s order of fighters. They require service technicians, etc, to keep the f35’s flying. Better to buy birds from countries that are Canadian allies.
America is no longer an ally.
When Trump used tariffs the last time and China reciprocated he bailed out the farmers. Watch this time as he bails out military weapons contractors who are going to lose billions. This will further grow the wasteful levels of defense spending
There is no waste quite like DOD waste, when I worked at a local Navy Base years ago was appalled at how much stuff they threw out. Remember going to an old building with an olympic size pool.. the whole pool was filled with old metal shelving rotting away. The base was littered with piles of junk.
yep...Trump destroys everything...esp if it has anything to do w money...like all his bankruptcies...total lousy douche that he is...the bail out money, like for the banks w Bush, come from our tax payer money! 😠 We pay for their mistakes and lining pockets of the rich! Banana Republic USA
Much as I would like to blame DOGE. This was a lost contract under Biden. The war in Ukraine has made militaries around the world concerned about the survivability and high costs of the next gen of helicopters.
It’s deeply concerning. Trump and Putin are colluding to carve up the world and the only thing standing in their way seems to be China. He has to be stopped. Every day he says something seemingly unbelievable, and the next day follows through with it. 😢😢😢🇨🇦
We must begin the national conversation that would have us withdraw from the Geneva Convention, and build our own nuclear arsenal.
Ukraine was supposed to be a shinning example of nuclear nonproliferation. Now? Iran and NK look like geniuses.
First nukes, then normalize relations.
War has changed.
"Although the Gripen E/F boasts several frequently overlooked strengths, the F-35 stands out as a more capable fighter overall. Its stealth technology significantly enhances its survivability at beyond-visual ranges against various threats"
Sacrificing defense to pwn Trump is #Peak2025
The latest upgrades to the Gripen have closed the gap a lot. Physical stealth vs EW stealth. Mach 2 intercepts vs mach 1.1 and STOL make the far northern bases useable and the F35 will never have a short enough landing to match that. The F35 is a great plane but not worth the cost to maintain.
Felon45/47 will never cherish a relationship with Canada because you have a democratic government. You are not governed by a dictator who hates his citizens but loves his nuclear weapons! Sorry Canada, America is going through an economic and political collapse.
Being a nasty sociopathic fuck has consequences. Betraying our friends & allies to kiss Putin’s ass will be a major cause of an economic collapse in America.
Yeah. Ut what about the P-8 for 14 +2 options ??? Aurores most of them juste got lire extensions and canadien seniors suites. Boeing 737 max is not Goodyear for the artic
A smart and necessary move; also something that bodes well for strengthening ties with actual allies so that we can defend our borders and take this opportunity to become a nation of self-reliance.
It is a good move. One of the ways America retains superiority is by selling reduced capability versions of their equipment to other nations. They disincentive those nations R&D into advanced weapons and keep them dependent on the US. Other countries need to stop purchasing US weapons.
Someone is spreading rumours that Musk is now in charge of constructing the F-35s. 😉😉😉😉😉Someone who is pissed that Bluesky doesn’t have a spaceX rocket exploding gif. 🤔🫣🫣
Dear Canada, Buying American fighter jets means you're tethered to future parts, repairs, tech hardware & software+updates. In other words, Canada is still buying 32 planes 47 can turn into bricks if you don't use planes You BOUGHT as he wishes. 47 is thus, your commander-in-chief.
#F35Bricks #Dumb
I am unbelievably sorry it came to this but Canadian friends, until we can get rid of the malicious presence in the White House, (and we ARE trying) Do Whatever You Have to Do.
With respect Marie, just getting rid of Trump isn't enough. Measures have to be taken to prevent this from ever happening again. The constitution needs a serious overhaul guaranteeing independent legislative, executive and judicial powers. And an independent fourth power, the free press.
I agree. Trump doesn't "happen" without an system propping him up. (He's not that bright and they've spent YEARS planning.) So, there is a LOT to be done.
I just don't want our Canadian neighbors to think we're just SM posts. We're doing what we can while we figure out how to do what we "can't" ✌️
I don't even have words for how infuriated I am at Shumer. 😡😡😡 He threw the House Dems under the bus. They stand for election every 2 yrs, while the Senators are every 6. So, we don't have that path to get rid of him completely, but we can get him out of Senate leadership. A tiny part but a start
As an American it makes me so sad to be happy that Canada is telling Trump to kick rocks. I love my country and I love our neighbors to the north and south. I am do ashamed of what the U. S. has become.
It’s good to see the allied countries banning together. The United States is showing that it is not a reliable partner. The allies have to protect themselves without the United States.
Plus, it's not proprietary "black box" technology that cannot be examined or modified. Sweden has offered to transfer technology and build in Canada. It's a much better deal for Canada.
If I was being threatened by the US I would want as many of the most sophisticated fighters they would sell you. Swedish jets will not fight off a fleet of F35s from the south.
Good. Avoid eliminate anything US that could be used against you as well; computer systems, internet connections, etc…make the switch. Until sanity is restored.
Excellent. Time we saw many other countries rejecting US goods and services and placing their business elsewhere. Decent countries don't tolerate far-right governments.
Those United State must tread softly now. Further dictating to Canada what can and will happen will only make it worse for our two Peoples. This isn't their Gov, its their People who chose chaos.
Canada must begin the national conversation that sees us withdraw from Geneva, and build our own nukes.
Don't get me wrong. I'm all about boycotting US products. But i don't think Trump would allow it. I would try to buy them and if he would really stop the deal i would by Fewnch Rafalle and Show him the Finger for any other military goods from US.
This also doomed the plane, everyone now realizes these are useless when the U.S. can literally shut them down and they clearly aren’t a trustworthy ally
Arming our allies with modern defense implements fuels the advancement of capabilities that keep USA ahead of our adversaries (except in hypersonics where are 3rd behind China and Russia).
We need these sales. The 🍊💩’s irrationality is harmful beyond the economy.
I wouldn’t be surprised that the ones we are still having made are already in production and due to a contract are then unable to be canceled. While the others haven’t stated. I would think if the order hasn’t started production at all we would have canceled the whole thing.
You need to be thinking strategically here to cancel that contract. We would be spending millions and millions and millions of dollars to cancel it that would then still be going to the US government anyway they’re still laws in place they’re still contracts. We don’t just get to wash our hands
Of things. If we just walked away from this contract, the fees that we would have to pay to cancel would still go to this American company, which means that money wouldn’t be there till then go towards getting the other 60 planes from Sweden.
So they would still make money off of us with even less product to show for it. That’s not being strategic that’s us just wasting our money. Which is why we aren’t canceling what has started.
Because we don’t belittle ourselves to act like Americans, that’s why we’re the country. We are unfortunately we are attached to the cancerous tumor to the south of us, but that does not mean we need to act as childish as they do.
If they have in fact, decided to sabotage these planes and something does happen that’s when we then go through the legal channels to have Trump arrested and charged with murder and terrorism but no, we do not act like children. We act like the adults Canadians are.
F35 have a remote kill switch that provides National Security Threats from US Oligarch Manufacturers tat are at best technologically inferiors as illustrated by Plains falling out of the sky under fEleonDonaldFascistBrand SpaceX & Tesla
Yesterday I made sure to buy produce from Mexico and Canada in our local grocery store. I also have a lot of things in my cupboard from our trip to Windsor in the fall.

Poland is one of our biggest buyers when it comes to military equipment. If the U.S. gets more buddy buddy with Putin, and they decide to stop all contracts. It will hit us hard.
I'm pretty sure the rest of the world will start looking to alternative suppliers for military equipment. You don't want to be dependent on a traitor after all. Nice present for the US industry from Trump. Will be a loss of hundreds of billions in revenue.

If the Pentagon can push for software upgrades on these fighters, they can also push for the equivalent of a kill switch and brick the planes.

Believe me, as an engineer myself I know how complicated embedded systems can be! 😉
Worst case, they could be used by the CAF as training vehicles to understand the capabilities and how to exploit vulnerabilities.
In the event of escalating tensions, put them near the border crossings mined as obstacles 🤣
It might not justify the cost of course.

If Trump and his idiot fluffers want to surrender, so be it.
Remaining democracies can each lead on a global issue - make a virtual superpower.
Someone should ask them, are you feeling America is great again yet?
Besides, that would undercut their own defense industry. Dumb comment.
Trump will donate them for free and the Russians will take them apart just to recycle the chips and the engines.
