I worked for a German company 1991-1994 in East Germany. West German government was heavily investing in East Germany. My employer getting subsidies to train East Germans. But young employees didn’t have patience to wait East Germany to catchup with West and they just moved to West.
I feel even more like the Berkshires is a case study group someone should be looking at.
Because we're rural, we're a former manufacturing area, we're left behind, and yet we're still fundamentally leftist versus becoming far-right and reactionary.
Is this a bad time to point out that East Germany was a sovereign country until 1990 and massive investments were made there during the 90´s? Many poorer regions in West Germany like the Ruhr region like to point out, the East has a better infrastructure as a result.
Just thinking about the immigration/labor raids in Mississippi food processing plants in 2019. I do wonder how much the widespread use of illegal immigrant labor has depressed wages in certain more agriculture states last 40 years. Thoughts?
Got this from an article on the Hill, based off of the Atlanta Fed's estimates. A month ago, it registered 3.9 (I'd heard 3.6, hence the -). Last week, it predicted 2.3 (elsewhere was similar, yearly was estimated 2.2-2.5). Now it's predicting -1.5. That's pretty bad...
Yeah, it's so crazy it's almost unbelievable. The unemployment and GDP #s are predicted to be catastrophic in the upcoming reports. To have this happen SO quickly, it's absolutely unheard of.
You need 2 months of significant downturn to be considered a recession, it could happen by April! 😱
Facts and statistics are meaningless to those people, It is a psychological block. They have authoritarian psychology and can only be reached through emotion. If you are not an authoritarian leader, they can only be managed through humiliating defeats. They need to see their leaders in prison.
I'm not sure how they can be won over. They do not even vote in their own best interest. The Democratic Party simply has no answer to the GOP disinformation machine.
Are there currently risks similar to the 70s oil imbargos? The resulting inflation did not respond to higher interest rates. I have read economic theories that the resulying stagflation was bwas due to a singular major price shock like the threatened retaliatory tarrifs.
So many of our federal jobs are mandates to support their local economies. Tell me, why Alabama for contracting? Smarter people or pork barrel? Those Red reactionaries voted for a convicted felon and cannot connect their vote to criminal actions on the Hill and in the White House. VOTERS it is on U
Sounds like a very interesting article but no matter how tempting I won't be subscribing to substack, a company that boosts neonazis as part of their business plan. I presume they're paying you well.
Have you considered writing a guest opinion for WP under the Bezos “free market pillar” should Trump go through w/ the sanctions against 🇲🇽 and 🇨🇦? He said that he really wants his opinion section to defend that pillar, and you’re a free spirit now, after all . . .
As someone in MA, I’m starting to worry we’ll turn into the Left Behind. Destroy the NIH and destroy our biotech. Other countries wanting to diversify their weapons purchases hurts Raytheon.
It's bad the same way that stealing money is bad, because that's what it is. It probably won't be disastrous because shifting money from taxpayers to insiders and rich people is pretty routine, and it won't be the first time that govt billions have been squandered. https://bsky.app/profile/kelseyhightower.com/post/3ljg5yqypkk2a
The main difference this time is not that stealing billions to benefit the ultra rich is new, but that this time it won't benefit the ultra rich generally but a small subset of them highly invested in a specific asset.
The third way it may be different this time is the self-dealing. Trump and Musk intend specifically to benefit personally from this policy in short order, and Musk—through reboot X as the Government-backed crypto payments system, through which government contracts are the anchor tenant—forever.
It’s not something mysterious. Forcing all retail business in to a Walmart model may have had something to do with that. My family is from Richland Center WI. In my 50 years I’ve seen the decline there. There is a 30 yo song about it by Madison’s Killdozer. Never trust a man from Arkansas.
This is fantastic, Paul. Really happy to see you writing on this right now. In the long term, seems like closing these regional gaps will be crucial to saving modern liberalism from its political consequences.
Is there any way to get an unpaywalled link to share with my research group?
If you write, point out it’s an Orwellian war where aggressor still pays $10million a month to ukraine to use fossil fuel pipelines. Ukrainians and Gazans are dying primarily so you don’t write about (and we don’t read About) climate change, opiods and processed obesity food. They got you.

And by slightly troubling, I of course mean:

No argument on it being fast, just the designation won't hit until Jul-Aug when it will already be obvious to everyone.
All over USA.
Talk to Republican voters.
Visit their districts, listen to them and their fears.
Is their concern about immigration, overshadowing their cost of living, violation of laws, corruption, education, jobs etc ?
Not everybody joined TrumpMusk cult !
Win them over ♡
The Fascists understand that the state creates the legal unit of account
