I only know Civ as that game I'll buy for $5 three years after its released, play it for 2 weeks straight barely sleeping and eating to play one more turn, then closing the game and not touching the series again until the sequel releases.

That may be; I remember liking 5 ok on launch. 6 was a big change and I had mixed feelings, but I kept going back to it until I grasped the new district arrangement, and then I was fine with it.
What’s different about 7 for me is not so much the new structure as the jump in ‚complexity‘.

Most of the actual gameplay is more or less the same, but it seems to have been fancied up to kind of disguise this.

My personal feeling is that it’s too familiar to cause such a dislocation in feeling. I could live with another big jump in learning curve, but this feels like I shouldn’t need such a learning curve just to play. It’s disorienting. It’s also the first Civ in ages that has no „one more turn“ effect.

I had Civ III; loved it.
I had Civ II. It was a bit too old-school, like FreeCiv on some Linux distros.
When I got IV, I didn't care for the look. I never bothered looking for newer editions.

My understanding is that it's not a matter of missing features. Supposedly they changed a lot of core systems to the point where it doesn't feel like Civ. Don't ask me to elaborate though. I've never played 4X, much less a Civ game

I played the shit out of Civ V and hated Civ VI because it was confusing and very different. It’s been like five years and I have grudgingly gotten used to Civ VI. I feel about Civ VII the way I felt about VI and I assume I will get used to it too.

I’ve played >2,000 hours of Civ6, and so far, Civ7 just is so slow, hard to even understand what you have in your cities, graphics are way overdone, so you can’t understand what each cell contains, and it doesn’t even tell you what you just built in a city. This one will take a full year to fix.

While I agree, I always felt that there were polish points that never got resolved from 5 to 6. From what I've heard of 7, that's compounded into straight up usability issues. Off top dome, the civilopedia is worse to navigate... which doesn't bode well since i still google stuff in Civ 6.

The oddest thing is that 7 is hands down the best release Civ game. The UI is crappy, yes, but the game itself is a refreshing change, building off of 6 and showing a lot of mechanics exist that we as players need to learn. It's as if people don't want surprise or excitement of discovery anymore.
