My mother's first Apple computer was an iMac and she had a lot of issues adapting in the beginning. The screen on the left reminds me of hers. Tens of empty folders followed by over a hundred documents, blank, all in neat order.
Pffft. I've seen much worse. Had a co-worker once who set it to small icons and turned off Align icons to grid. They were clutter piles on the desktop.
our stuff gets automatically deleted after 3 years unless it goes into repositories. It’s wildly annoying but also then you just don’t fret. It’ll just be gone!
Our email gets purged after 30 days so I end up with file structures like “2023 Inbox May” where I just panic dump email that I didn’t have time to file.
Years ago I took over for a guy who’d been fired and he had an actual honest to god folder on his desktop called “desktop 2”. And it was full. I just deleted it all without looking.
Tilly and I have talked about this. Many of these kids have never been steeped in windows os file/folder structures. Don’t learn shit on a device or in the Apple ecosystem, so naturally they have no clue how to use.
While I’ve encountered a few desktops where you had to move or delete files to reveal the ones that are hiding off the side of the visible screen, I have also encountered desktops so busy the icons are ghosted on top of each other.
I save everything to my desktop & am very good at naming files. I just use my search & immediately find what I’m looking for. My desktop looks like that across 2 27” screens & I have clicked an icon on it for years.
Hell, I have a Launch Agent that runs nightly and cleans out my Downloads folder. Anything I need to keep goes into a rational file system in iCloud at the end of the day. Everything else...zapped.

Also I keep logo files in there because that’s like the top thing people about corp comms for.
And millenials
I wasn't allowed near anyone's computer in grad school because I'd make a folder and drop their desktop files in it
At least this woman tiles her desktop mess.

I was using computerized typesetting equipment back in the '70s, so I had a bit of a head start when PCs came along (I was still young then)
