Dishwasher:
- Run fewer, fuller loads
- Clean the filter before starting (dishes get cleaner too)
- Leave open to dry if practical: reduces mold growth
- Clean out any debris stuck in the jet arms
- Clean under the door seal
Refrigerator:
- Vacuum dust from compressor coils & fan (which exhaust heat removed from interior)
- Don't allow dust to collect behind it
- Repair splits on door seals with close-fitting duct tape (or spring for new ones)
- Don't allow moisture to collect
Clothes washer:
- Leave door open to dry out after cycle (as d'washer)
- Clean mold growth with Tilex
- Keep soap & additive journals clean
- Keep spins balanced
- (Theory:) For high water pressure, turn down inlet pressure to the unit. We've replaced our inlet valve body twice.
Tank water heater:
- Safely flush accumulated rust via the bottom outlet valve once a year. The released water should run clear. Look for flakes of rust settling at bottom of a bucket.
- Make sure pressure relief valve works
- Wrap output lines in foam insulation sleeves where reachable.
A favorite spot for mice to make impressive nests.
Laundry still damp after usual runtime? 🐭
Odd smell of nonhuman wee once dryer gets going? 🐭
Yeet off that exhaust pipe and shake it out into a trash bag outside.🐭🐭🐭
My mom has a reminder in her phone, every 3 months to ask me if I cleaned my dryer vent. I have lived on my own for 15+ years. If I say no, she asks me everyday until I do. Sometimes I lie, but it only works for a couple days. I start to worry karma is coming for me so I clean it.
And yes, she is right, that part should be cleaned. Probably not 4 times a year for 2 ppl but it should be cleaned. We eat dinner off ours twice a week 😂
Yes! Thank your mother for me. I haven't thought about my dryer vent in years! And my clothes have not been getting dry lately. Just went out there and cleaned it. Yuck!
When I was a kid, one time I tried to pull the lint filter off the door to clean it and the whole door came off in my hand. I don't let the memory stop me but it is a little stressful every time.
Not a bad idea to check your washing machine filter also. My daughter's washer faulted out. Filter had 2baby socks, a broken Sharpie, a dryer sheet, and various detritus
Remember when Amazon had pictures of burned chargers in the reviews? And then they made some rules and now we can buy toasters from companies like qfiy and xolmx.

Probably because I'm tired, and also been meaning to get it cleaned out good before winter sets in.
It's also potentially a fire hazard.
