There are many different kinds of rangers. 400+ government employees, most are considered rangers. That includes law enforcement, employees staffing entrance stations, giving programs, etc.

I should also say the situation will be REAL bad if seasonal employees don't get their jobs back this year. They make up 40% of park staff in the busy season and keep things running. They've had their job offers rescinded. Supposedly will get them back, but it hasn't happened yet, so who knows.

Yes! Supposedly seasonals WILL get their jobs back, but they haven't yet. If they don't it will be REALLY BAD. Thy make up about 40% of the staff, mainly the ones cleaning bathrooms, staffing entrance stations, and giving programs.

My guy’s dad was a park ranger for years, including in Yellowstone for several years when said guy was a kid, and it sounds like his childhood was AMAZING. I told him this morning that however much he is missed, I’m rather glad he didn’t live to see this.

Not everyone who has spent little time around the big national parks appreciates what large operations they are — a factor of both their size and the amount of traffic they get. Yosemite is one of the larger ones.

Totally. And the summer workforce is about 40% seasonals. All seasonal (at least in Yosemite, which is about 300 folks) had their job offers rescinded. That will really be where the visitors feel the loss. Supposedly they will get rehired, but haven't had their jobs offered back yet, so who knows.

All the staffing at the HSCs are Aramark, so maybe? But if the park can't rehire it's seasonals (including wilderness rangers) then maybe not.

Things are still quiet-ish in May (excluding Memorial Day weekend). I'd say it's probably the best time to go before everyone gets COMPLETELY burned out. And are you talking wilderness permits for backpacking? In that case, def go for it. Wilderness users rely less on park staff anyway.

Yosemite has 1.2 million visitors in summer. A skeleton crew of 2000 or so temps, with most of their experienced leadership fired, will be hard pressed to ensure safety and services, so expect a cut in visitor permits. Yosemite is a chaotic mob scene in summer to begin with.

“Who knows” is a big part of this. Not everyone can afford to hang around until the Park Service gets an OK to start bringing people on again.
