Historically, it seems pretty common that the billionaire class instigates a culture war to avoid a class war. But with 14 billionaires and counting in Trump’s administration, it’s going to be difficult to ignore.

It's not the ignoring that's the problem it's their covering up and the total lack of enforcing the laws on them that's the problem. But I do agree with you on the historical note.
I am currently in Instagram suspension… not for offensive content or threats or harassment, but for posting that the rentier class wants to keep us divided because they benefit from the left vs the right. And they are terrified of the workers vs the 1%.
Imagine the billionaires putting some of their resources toward the betterment of communities and people, just imagine the joy,
Ok, forget I even mentioned it..
He’s going to get the government to end all defense contracts and then give them to himself for a discount. And that’s how you cut spending. Watch him pull a rabbit out of his hat!
"There's a storm coming, Mr. Wayne. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us."
And yet, this is what working class people voted for? It's frustrating, and one has to hope it won't ultimately crack the foundation, but it is where it is at the moment.
It seems to me that low income and working class Trump supporters believe they are millionaires in waiting and as soon as their fortunes roll in, they will get to be part of a future grift that benefits their bank accounts.
AG, I think Rupert Murdoch, Rush Limbaugh and the rest have been waging culture war for 40+ years. Their propaganda machine is the most effective of its kind since WWII.
Reagan's win over Carter, the transition of the NRA from education to lobbying for power. The Contract with America,
Newt Gingrich, the inexpensive rise of alternative broadcasters filling the space with "Conservative" propaganda.
I think we are at war. Asymmetrical war for the Constitution of the United States and the progress we've made since the 1930's. Information war, culture war, same thing.
I spotted this earlier and felt it was apt. No idea who said it though...
"Powerful, wealthy people push the culture war on us to distract us from the class war. It frightens them to think the right and left could unite behind an issue and threaten their obscene profiteering."
For whom will it be difficult to ignore? Voters ignored every salient fact about who Trump is and whom he seeks to emulate and what he has done and intends to do.
Isn't Elon Musk considered a Government Contractor with his relationship to SpaceX? Isn't it illegal to donate to a political campaign when you are a Government Contractor? Yes, it is.
Nick Hanauer wrote this article in 2014. At the time the 5 richest in the US were worth $260 billion. Today the 5 richest are worth $950 billion. The minimum wage was $7.25/hour and still is. Three elections since then shifting between Democrats and Republicans.
This country and society needs to find a way to deal with the massive and growing wealth inequality taking place. Democratic elections do not seem to be working. Don't really have any answers.
Honest question: is there any historical precedent for a people governed by autocracy/oligarchy can return to democratic form of government without violence?
It's going to be really hard to fight anything when we keep acting like the millionaires and billionaires are just like the rest of us and didn't step all over us to get where they are.
Until we're allowed by our own party to get mad at them, nothing will change.
DESPITE EVIDENCE FRAUD, HARRIS/BIDEN HAVE NO INTEREST PURSUING GOP VOTER IRREGULARITIES SWING STATE BALLOTS. SUPPORT INDEPENDENT FORENSIC ANALYSIS OF GOP SWING STATE BALLOTS. THANKS FOR MAKING A DIFFERENCE !

Well seeing they oligarchs own most or all of the mass media in the US pretty sure we will be facing caravans of Trans immigrants wanting to teach CRT by 2026
Yep, that’s that’s why they have to cut all aafety net programs to fight against that trans mob invading the country. They will gladly give up their veterans benefits, social security, Medicaid, public schools, etc. to combat the fake attack they convinced them of.
Class war is also a form of culture war, definitely as usually practised.
The MAGA-Musk culture war has similar disdain for educated middle class the Cultural Revolution had.
Yep. And as an educator, the whole prospect is just terrifying. I'm doing everything I can to help my students understand how precious their education is.
I remember when we actually had a Consumer Protection agency that did an adequate job protecting consumers from greedy monopolistic millionaires. Now Republicans have basically succeeded destroying consumer protections. Another thing Democrats got on rolled on.
Serious question: why would any billionaire want to work for Trump? I mean you’re a billionaire you don’t even fucking need to work why would you want to work for the most incompetent government in the history of the United States?
🎯🎯🎯 STILL not easy to ‘BUY’ but having a lot of $$$ DOES help.
I mean, even Drumpf was only MARGINALLY interested in politics, ‘70’s-‘80’s. That is until he got his 1st, REAL TASTE of that Pure & Undiluted Power, in 2016.
"Fascism begins the moment a ruling class, fearing the people may use their political democracy to gain economic democracy, begins to destroy political democracy in order to retain its power of exploitation and special privilege." ~ Tommy Douglas
Particularly now since the majority of Americans now realize Republicans, the health care industry , Oligarchs and Tech Bro's literally set up a system where they have a license to steal. Stealing from people will have consequences.
They haven’t though. The majority of Americans chose to help the oligarchs and the system that rewards the rich and hurts the rest of us. They either voted for the party that only helps the rich (republicans) or they didn’t care enough to vote.
90 million eligible voters stayed home. They have lost faith in our system. That has to be corrected by real change. Not change around the edges. Real change.
Nobody got bankruptcy betting on people’s stupidity. the innovation is that billionaires bow get to Manufacture stupidity and steer it to serve their needs through social media and corrupt medias.
Worse, there's some sort of tax dodge they get for serving in the government... put it as an enticement for people w/lucrative jobs to come and SERVE. Unfortunately...
That's why they've been stoking the culture wars so hard recently. Rupert Murdoch fighting for his son to maintain the political bend on fox news after he bites it. Trump wanting to revoke the license of media that ask real questions. It's so hard to see trump as stupid when it all feels calcualated
It'll get easier to ignore when they deny people healthcare, they die sooner, and the next generation doesn't get education or fair wages.
They already told you that's their plan.
Dems need to get aggressive w their messaging. Get on news channels. Get on podcasts. Remind the lower 50% billionaires dgaf about them every single day.
Life has ALWAYS been a class war...it's just that they've done a very, VERY good job of creating institutions that perpetuate race and other class warfare between the "peasants" while they rape and pillage the taxpayers coffers - while said taxpayers keep the wealthy in power. Too much ignorance.
These guys only hold power if we let them… the big b is for bullshit! You can’t eat money and the accounting is very suspect!!! The CDLS’s of a human is not Joe much they can accumulate!
I wonder how many MAGAts are paying attention... seriously... are they? I highly doubt it & if they hear about it, are they going to care? It's baffling.
The Drumpf administration will be beset with inter-billionaire warfare - traditionally, the one thing every government has to do is mediate disputes amongst/between oligarchs.
We also have to admit there is a pretty large contingent of dumbasses in our country that enjoy watching culture war fights like they enjoy watching celebrity housewives snatching each others wigs off on tv.
And the reason they’re dumbasses is because 47% cannot even read a children’s book to their kids and many are just too lazy to read. That’s why they never read any of the docs released from Congress or the DOJ. They also have no logic skills to recognize propaganda.
Think class war is where it is actually at think 1877 Pittsburgh, Patterson NJ, Pullman Strike. No culture war. Even strikes in mid-century all class based. The destructions of union really shifted things in the mid80s. Then class war, also unis mature boomers.
Yes Red Scare & McCarthyism culture war. But what billionaire and when? HJ Heinz, a patriarch, sought to quell the class war in early 20th c, others did too. (F Frick!)
Unions, Social security and Medicare were reluctantly allowed by the super rich to avoid igniting a class war. Nothing is learned from history by them.
But, it's like the billionaires have actually come out in broad daylight with the class war they quietly started decades ago. Instead of subtly undermining SS, Musk wants to "uproot it". Musk thinks CEOs should be "ruthless" in pursuit of shareholder value. Who elected Musk anyway?
The South before/after the Civil War is a prime example of the Planter Class getting the populace to fight their war. Leaders were not punished for Treason. Came back to power and w/myth of The Lost Cause.
All the statues came down in past 10 years
But the South still votes for the ultra rich
cause
The fight isn’t men vs. women, white vs. Black, or immigrant vs. native. It’s always been rich vs. poor. They use divide-and-rule tactics to distract us while billionaires quietly push their grand agenda. Don’t fall for the psychological warfare. #Unity #DivideAndRule
One issue with that argument is most billionaires back democrats. That began in earnest back when they bought their way out of trouble in 2008 and told Obama who his AG and Deputy AG were going to be,
Not all billionaires are idiots. Backing fascists is for idiots who only think about short term profits and an insatiable thirst for stealing every single cent they possibly can. All billionaires suck but they are not the same.
I wonder how possible it would have been for billionaires to spend four years searching for loyalists who could work at key polling places throughout the swing states and for a generous fee, suppress votes rather than add votes. Just make some mail-ins disappear. Cash on delivery of service. Hmmm?
Hmmm...instead of them leaving congress rich, they're starting off rich...already corrupt...and playing baccarat with our money instead of straight poker. High stakes government...
maybe Congress can get some neon signs and private rooms...
The majority voted to help the rich and corporations. Republican voters voted to help the rich only and non voters didn’t care enough to even vote. We definitely can’t do anything about it now that republicans have entire control of the government. They’ll pass more tax cuts for the rich
Pin this. This won't end well if it continues. A strong middle class with a vested interest in the status quo is necessary for a stable society. The more wealth rises to a few a the top, at the expense of middle class, the higher the risk of revolution.
They have their base so brainwashed that there’s no chance they see this. Guaranteed they’ll sell this as a group of “outsiders” coming in to challenge the status quo. I mean they already have money, so why would they need yours. Right
The Democrat party (as it currently exists) needs to end, much like the Jedi Order. Establishment/corporate dems time is over. It needs to be rebranded as a Labor Party and focus almost exclusively on the wealth gap and mostly ignore engaging in culture/social justice issues if this is to be won
Throwing the marginalized under the bus is not going to lure right wing workers to the Dems because any efforts to help them will always be considered “communism”.
Not throwing them under the bus. Nominating new party leaders who will ABSOLUTELY protect them. But keep the messaging focused on the class inequality. Engaging in any other issue will distract from the main priority, ousting the ultra wealthy from power, and possibly cause further election losses
We’ve ignored it for far too long. That’s why we’re here - a fascist administration heading to the WH and a congress that rolls over and willingly shows their nether parts. What’s going to be difficult is holding them to account now. The horse has long left the barn. It’s much later than you think.
Dems need to cut off their billionaire backers and their coterie of coastal celebs & elderly pundits in favor of the grassroots. Tim Walz, John Fetterman & Marie Gluesenkamp Perez are the future of the party. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marie_Gluesenkamp_Perez
DOES help that very few of them appear to be clever enough to be SUBTLE about ANY OF IT (Bezos tends to keep out of Press despite owning [on purpose?] a NewsPaper & Zuckerberg actively TRIES to avoid publicity).
Narcissism, ‘Shamelessness’, & Attention Seeking MAY prove their ultimate downfall.
The only way it will work , and if it does it will be pitchforks and torches .
If you can make these “ dummies “ that voted for the billionaires boys club . To see what’s really happening?
It will be on .
The billionaire class isn’t the issue IMO, the issue is the Republican Party who legislated solely to help the billionaires and hurt the rest of us. Without the party they wouldn’t be so powerful. They buy republicans to give them tax cuts, handouts, and cut regulations yet we keep voting for them
If those billionaires were held accountable and paid their share in taxes they wouldn’t be so harmful but with their money and political party the rest of us lose every time. Republicans use social issues to keep voters distracted so they vote against their best interest. Rich vs American people
I'm trying to think of anything else that has brought this country together since 2016 and I got nothin except this. It may be sinking in that class is the problem.
Self confidence can get you a long way in business and politics. The UK public school system is famous for teaching self confidence above any educational standards.
The UK has twice experimented with Eton alumni govenments.
They failed for obvious reasons.
I feel like we need to be tactical and specific on how we do this, 'no DEI program ever hurt you but here are all the ways the billionaire class has hurt you.'
Their intention is to destroy our government & us, then install themselves permanently & privatized. I’m sure they will war over their fiefdoms, but it’s their goal & they will enjoy our suffering
I like Timothy Snyder's "sadopopulism" concept: When watching your chosen leader hurt people you dislike is so gratifying, you don't mind suffering a little yourself.
I would love to think so, but the American populace these days doesn’t hit like South Koreans/Ukrainian/Georgians. Unfortunately, we like to be comfortable in our homes and yell at the internet or are too busy just trying to make ends meet. Or maybe I am still jaded from last month’s election…
Republicans have been pretty openly for gutting both of those programs for decades. A lot of older folks seem to think they’d be exempt though. Not like they care after they get theirs. Then, too, most Americans have no clue how social security works either.
It isn't a class war to me. It is simply wanting to keep rights and equality. Not wanting to be relegated to a position of "mud sill" to support someone's need for money and power.
There is only one reason these Billionaires would accept positions in Trump's administration. The free pass to steal more of the nations money and resources. WAKE UP America.
They are gonna steal sooooo much money. They are gonna change so many tax laws to benefit the wealthy. All we can do is sit back and watch the show....preferably with a tequila bottle. We voted against this and lost. All we can do is hope repubs suffer enough that they start to see the truth.....
Historically, the billionaire class stokes culture wars to distract from class wars.
But with 14 billionaires in Trump’s administration, the lines couldn’t be clearer: it’s a war on working people, and they’re not even hiding it anymore. #ClassWar #TaxTheRich
This is the thing - it's becoming quite clear that the one and only thing MAGA and non-MAGA agree on is that the billionaire class has way too mich power. So Trump inviting them to have more power is unlikelly to lead to much good.
That’s not true. MAGA sided with the billionaires. They vote to cut their taxes, cut regulations that protect workers and the environment, and give them handouts. Republicans always do the Rich’s bidding and the majority either voted for that or didn’t care enough to vote.
The poor blokes that voted for trump to "change the status quo!!" Only problem, they are "low info ppl" and will not realize why things have gotten worst for them....🤮🤮🤮🤮
What they don’t ignore is when you call them a traitor. I tell them they’re traitors for supporting the people who attacked MY country. Then I tell them they are the least patriotic group in history. That usually ends the convo quickly
They sure did a great job of getting all the useful idiots to vote so that 14 billionaires get free access to some more billions.
$$ will come right off the backs of working people as they cut every program that helps. They will keep you chasing carrots while feeding you broth.
