I'm not following closely or anything, but I think he said he's doing videos while in Dubai playing music, rather than doing videos for Dubai. It's all a bit sus.
An awful lot of his videos recently look like promos/ads and I suspect he’s getting paid.
I don’t mind him making a few bucks, but they’re not exactly clear that it’s paid promotional material.
Stinks of “influencer” vibes that many have been castigated for
True. But I also don’t like when someone creates a video where they say “I find these xxx crisps delicious” but nothing to indicate they’ve got paid to say that.
Maybe I’m old-fashioned, but I find that dishonest
In the US, it would be a violation of FTC rules, serious fines apply. Of course, many people do the same in the US flagrantly, guessing (often correctly) that nobody will come for them.
Shitty behaviour, even if it's legal in ROI.
It’s a grey area in Ireland. It’s regulated for traditional media - tv, radio, paper publications. But the rules are hopelessly outdated and the regulators not really able to follow up on similar practices on web, TikTok, YouTube, etc
Yeah, I had to unfollow, there was just a major flood of paid content. Fairplay, he's cashing in on the burst of fame, but I reckon there's a balance to strike and for me he just went too paid and not enough funny. Hopefully he realises before he loses everyone, he has a good style.
He posted a salty insta story yesterday where he made fun of someone who had commented that he was doing ‘ads for Saudi Arabia’ and okay yes but also let’s not act like doing Dubai promo is the backbone of any morally superior position
He is likeable and he's a victim of the limitations of Ireland's "celebrity economy" where you can be famous without making any money. And by the time he gets a book out he mightn't be beloved anymore.
He's a good singer and from his clips seems to have a repoirtoir of songs that'd go down well in pubs. Could have got decent year or 2 of gigs around the country leveraging his wider fame.
FWIW the official reason for him being over there is to do gigs playing in Irish bars.
Am generally pro Garren, went to see the sea stack in Mayo after seeing it on a video he did but have had to take a position of "he probably just get it" about some of the stuff he's done.
I've mixed feelings on lads taking money for stuff like this, like how many people are going to be persuaded to go to Dubai because of him posting, but at the same time, would they be paying him if it didn't work. So long as he doesn't come back and start shiting on like the last who went to Iran.
It took me far too long to figure out who TH is 🤦♀️ I’d blocked/muted him on everything years ago so had forgotten he existed - he was too annoying to be funny for me anyway!
Yeah at least it’s a far cry from TH and his Iran bs, I find it very hard to imagine garron coming back and hand waving human rights abuses of maids and labourers etc the way TH hand waves the state abuse of Iranian women smh
Sadly I think a lot of Irish ppl are just like ah sure isn’t it great to make a load of money and have beach and either don’t care about what they do to non-wealthy immigrant workers or they rly have no clue. Not wishing to condemn ppl who go out to work ofc but its a bad place with a shiny finish
He seems a sound fella. I hope this doesn't drag him down a dark path of taking money for all sorts of dodgy shit. But I dont know where my morals would be at if I was offered money to go to Dubai. Though in general it gives ne the ick
I’m going to be real w you I literally don’t know anything about Dubai except a couple people I know teach ESL there. Would ye mind pointing in the general direction of how I can learn more?
I know people who live and work there as well so I really shouldnt be getting judgy. As a place its known for very oppressive laws and human rights abuse. Not sure where is the best place to get info though
I saw a quote recently and can’t remember who from but it was relevant to the celebs at Trumps inauguration. Essentially, never put your faith in the entertainers to stand for anything, they’ll do any dance for anyone for attention. A vapid class of people.

One of those places that charge extra for toast?
So I can see the bind he's in.
