Timoclea of Thebes throws man who raped her down a well. She next hurled in heavy stones until he was dead. Painted in 1659 by Elisabetta Sirani of Bologna, who had a thing for assertive heroines.

I can’t help but notice something anatomically weird about the pose, specifically her right arm/shoulder. Does anybody else see that or am I missing something?
We need more wells. And rocks to throw. The legal system doesn't cut it in so many places. Start chucking the scummy ones and we can enjoy the company of the good and respectful ones.
I wonder if the way in which his legs are painted is somehow symbolic. Hardly ever can we see mens legs shown in this way. It's very feminine position. Associated with giving birth by women and full of sexual context. Interesting in this case.
Yes, that water was ruined forever. I'm going with they dragged his corpse out before purification...they just had to contend with bits and bobs in the buckets for a few weeks.
Someone tried same with me and it happened back in the day when we had the original platform sneakers..I ended up kicking out the window in the back seat. It got his attention and he stopped. Guess he needed a story for Dad now; no remorse for what he was trying to do🖕
If more women had done this perhaps men would have gotten the message. This painting should have been copied over and over and hung in prominent places all over Europe.
Surani was a brilliant artist. I saw several of her paintings many years ago and was struck by the detail in her portraits. Her depiction of Portia wounding herself is a depiction of female strength and determination
This artwork would be banned in the USA today. You couldn't even assign a school homework essay on it without being threatened with your job as a teacher.
I love the look of non-chalance on her face. She is now I am throwing you down the well. Next I'm going to throw stones upon you until you die. Can you die quickly please I need to get home and cook dinner. 🤭
Rape is far more than the physical assault, the emotional trauma creates wounds that may never heal.
Believe me when I say that all rapists should receive the same treatment.
Capital punishment should be avoided, but in cases where there's no chance of a person becoming "human" again it's better to shoot or hang than just put in jail.
I've killed people in the past, which always makes me feel bad, but I would never feel bad about killing a rapist. I may have done bad things, but I had my reasons. There's no excuse for rapists, though. They deserve to suffer.
Doc if the painting is a depiction of heroic assertiveness how was she raped (hypothetical). Also thanks for using the fem gendered word for hero ("she"ro is stupid) but I think the word "hero" should apply to all.👍
All men have a thing for assertive heroines. They just too inept and undereducated they’re too stupid too realize it. I’ve never met a man (I was military) so I’ve met many men, that want turned on by a strong authoritative woman. Every man has a mother. I man come on!
Yeah, but where are the wells around here? I guess you'd have to lure your rapist out to the country. Oooh, even better, throw him in a cesspool so you aren't polluting potable water. (Thinking in terms of our current reality)
Thank you, while I'm so down with killing his ass, ruining the water supply affected many other people. But...that was then. It wasn't uncommon to throw peeps down wells.

nice
thanks for sharing
Thanks for clearing that up. My second guess was EARLY BREAKDANCING.
Even though the rapist converting into a rotting corpse will be less toxic, it's still too toxic for the well to be potable, alas ._.
fuck him for polluting the well. if only he hadn't been a rapist bastard it would have been fine.

Please
and
Thank You
Let's bring that back.
They’re both so interesting… & I’m very disappointed that neither one was ever covered in any of my college classes!
We REALLY need to cover awesome strong women throughout the ages at *every* level of education!
Masterpiece of feminine artistry and …. justice.
Getting stoned in the 1660's:💀💀💀
Can’t put my finger on it. Then again I’m neither a historian or an art critic. 🤷🏼
Also, go Timmy! I, too, have a thing for assertive heroines.
Great painting.
Let’s get this rapist-down-the-well party started.
Artemisia Gentileschi was raped by a "colleague" (her mentor).
The man was already married, too.
She went "all in" denouncing the man to the pope.
W00T!
Believe me when I say that all rapists should receive the same treatment.
I assume you were asking as I said rapists should receive the same treatment, that was irony.
Life in prison until fixed or exonerated is the only way we can try to make things right for all parties.
We pay for schools, roads, other programs we may never use ourselves because it makes society as a whole better.
Stop contextualizing government spending as personally fair, but as necessary and beneficial.
