Mid 80s
It was used for controlling the machine, while data input was done on punched card.
The machine had twin RK05 disks giving 5 Mb of storage. It was used for producing technical drawings on a 6 foot flatbed plotter.

I worked for DEC through most of the 80s... I knew these intimately although the VT-220 was the standard issue until I got an Ultrix workstation.

As far as I know it's never been confirmed anywhere, but I'm fairly sure that the Lisa and the original Macintosh owe a lot to the VT-100's design.
