So when do the people who own the companies that build this shit (and those who will probably lose their jobs because of the contract cancelation) start tuning on FOTUS & Twitler and ALL of the GOP??? When does that shit happen...

"A spokesperson for Defence Minister Bill Blair says Carney has asked Blair to look into whether the F-35 contract is the best investment for Canada, or if there are better options."
The Gripen was the better choice for Canada from the outset. The F-35 was selected for political/trade reasons.
An aircraft that has lower ongoing maintenance requirements, is field serviceable with a small team and can use conventional roadways for takeoff and landing makes more sense for Canada.
I know very little about aircraft so I'll take your word on the pros/cons, but it was widely nodded at that the purchase was politically-minded. Then again, so is the cancellation, but then it's also strategically-minded. Can we trust hardware from this administration? What might be hidden inside?
Common sense, you don’t buy from your enemy. Hope Carney cancels our order soon too. There are other good options from countries that won’t stab their friends in the back.
Same. It's gonna hurt either way though, but more if US government was getting by with what they are doing to our allies. Can't blame them for protecting themselves, and while I'm terrified what happens to us, I hope they win this.
As we know MAGA is so immersed in right wing propaganda that they've lost their curiosity, critical thinking, and their humanity. They've lost the ability to care about anything that doesn't personally affect them.
How does one get through to people like this? I think it will take shared pain.
And maybe this will hit an actual thought for them. They’re counting on a war bc war is huge industry. Without those contracts, those aspirations falter and hopefully fail.
Yup.
These dumb greedy bitches thought that this was a good idea. Theres already not a long laundry list of customers that purchase military arms. Made even shorter by who the US WILL sell to.
And here they are nuking the entire NATO customer base.
Any business person....doesn't even have to be an overpaid self important albeit useless CEO can tell you.....making a niche product that costs alot to produce........just to sell to only a small base of people is economic and financial suicide.
Im a business degree-less scrub and even I KNOW that.
Hoping Canada follows- doesn't make sense to buy equipment from the country threatening to annex us- it's all so silly and unnecessary but here we are...
Pretty sure the other nations involved in the production of that fighter will be working hard on sorting that problem out. There will probably end up being a euro/canadian version and US version
That's true, the Gripen is designed for more defensive sorties while the F-35 is built by the states, so it can take an offensive role and also has stealth capabilities.
Not to burst the bubble, but it doesn't ring true that they can just cancel an existing contract without being liable to the manufacturer for damages. The defense industry can't be that dumb.
These cancelations may be for "plans" and in their budgets; something less than a binding contract.
You're being pedantic. You're focusing on the actual signing of a final contract, when military procurement takes years, even decades, to occur.
The Portuguese Air Force, like many others, had decided the F-35 was a suitable replacement for their air force. Now they're going to choose another plane.
Okay yes, it is a future thing. The reason I posted that is because any pain to the defense industry is speculative, for the very reasons you cited. And if this is a leverage move, then it can change. Because Trump can change on a dime. Pedantic? I guess, literally. But also accurate.
It's not leverage. Many nations are not just concerned about his aggression, but his instability. What good is him playing nice today when he can turn again tomorrow? They know they simply can't trust the US anymore. It's a fact the US can withhold F-35 software updates that limit its effectiveness.
I appreciate your detailed response with information. There was not anything inaccurate or provocative in my first post and it feels like you want an argument. I don’t want that, but thanks for the info. Bye Bye
Well I don’t know. Trump cancels about every other agreement ever reached. I bet there are some escape clauses in those contracts. From what I read in the comments those F35’s are not exactly top notch.
And it has nothing at all to do with the unreliability and issues plaguing the F-35 platform? Strong doubt. The political motivation is almost certainly secondary, several other countries cancelled their orders before Trump was even elected.
I will say more. To make expensive and modern toys for your army, you need to have a large sales market, then your native army will allow itself to have such ultra-modern gadgets. And now, when the international market turns its nose up at the products of US companies, your army will decline.
Can only hope every country follows suit. The F-35 was untenable and they would be better served by almost any other platform they can design & service in-house.
I am hoping the “find out” phase comes rapidly. Canada also thinking about next fighter purchase and I hope it ain’t a Yankee jet. America does not deserve our money.
I’d wait to see a confirmation as well, the news is all over the place with this stuff, some outlets word it as if the deals are cancelled and some say the same thing as you where they are just considering cancelling
Given the US 'government' has claimed they can turn off military equipment they supplied, they have made themselves an unreliable source, so, in the bin with the merkin scrap metal, Europe's going to keep it local now...
Ever since seeing this happen with the Video Game industry, I've been saying for a while now Capitalism rots everything it touches from the inside out.
Especially if it was wonderful and wholesome to begin with.
Very concerning reports on the maintenance associated to the F35 and how Lockheed Martin is profiting on the service model as regular armed forces technicians are unable to perform it
Nations need to start building hardware domestically. Nothing stops nations from acquiring a license to produce Eurofighters for example. I’m sure the willingness to cooperate is there for the right incentives.
But honestly - how did they not see that coming. They are in fact, stupid. Elon, weighing in on the war in Ukraine and doing his stupid “ MY satellites I can fuck with them” public wanking power display made USA biggest export - weapons of death - wildly untrustworthy.
Why would anyone want them anyway? Expensive. Availability rates around 50%. Maintenance costs through the roof. There are better options. Countries were on board before in part because they were allies. Now they're not sure if they'll be an ally or an enemy
Games? Stopping arms & intelligence to Ukraine, when you've signed a treaty to protect it if it gave up nuclear weapons; current trade war visited upon allies; the apparent favouring of Putin, make the USA an unreliable partner. I never thought I'd see the US undergo this kind of self-destruction.
I do know ... and appreciate ... that America has disparate parts. For me, now, the idea of the Country being some bulwark, some beacon of civilization .. is dead. There is a rotten thread running through American society and your institutions are proving ill-equipped to deal with it.
This is what keeps me from thinking this is a smart master plan. Everything they've been doing they think is smole and mirrors....but then something like this happens that DOESNT feel smoke and mirror-y at all.
Thats where they dumped a gigaton of money at. But now purchasers are scrambling away? 🧵
These stupid warhawks ONLY CARE about our military complex. I doubt that their "shadow plan" included their limited list of customers deciding to not give them money. Who are they gonna sell to now?
Saudi Arabia? Russia?
....thats still a short list bozos. Shorter than the ENTIRE list of NATO.
And I hope Canada follows suit. As stated, they need to have reliable allies, and the US no longer fits that definition, whether via Trump's chaos, or the MAGA GOP Congress which supports it, and no longer functions as an independent branch of government.
Well I feel sorry for the Lockheed Martin and Northrup-Grumman employees who will lose jobs because of this, but then again most of them probably voted for Trump.
I find this especially amusing because we all know these defense conglomerates all funneled millions to Trump and the MAGA GOP, but they are about to lose billions in sales.
All previously deemed fair trade deals, being ripped up. The tariffs add money to his war chest while bankrupting the people of the country. All these decisions are bad for GDP numbers and are NOT Short term pain moves. Most likely you are in for world of pain.
Huge cuts to low and mid income support systems, education systems, limited freedom of speech.Huge layoffs in the federal level, while insisting he needs the 3 auto manufacturers in Can. Huge tariffs on all major imports from All countries. While giving huge subsidies to corp welfare comp like Tesla.
These defense contractors don't care who they sell their weapons to. They will find other purchasers. Russia for one. Unfortunately I think it will not hurt them.
I wouldnt trust the US either. They kill switched a lot of equipment in Ukraine, nothing from stopping the US from sabotaging equipment in Europe for Russia...
100% this. Especially with fElon in there doing whatever his DOGes are doing. He can use Starlink to throttle battery power to his swastikars and lock owners out. I wouldn’t buy anything from him before, and now add anyone who wants Felon47’s favor. It’s just too risky and dangerous.
Wondering if America will have any trade partnets or allies left....Starmer's news conference is huge news...especially after the lunatic news conference with head of NATO the other day....
I find it odd that those companies would be big Trump supporters, when he has always been an enemy of NATO, the alliance that allows these companies to sell their stuff for billions to other NATO members.
Europe says #FuckYou 🖕🏿🖕🏾🖕🏽🖕🏼🖕🏻🖕 #ConvictedFelonOrangeAss #FFOTUS #Führer2 #JustShutYourFuckingMouthUp #YouAreNotThePresidentAndYouNeedToGoAway! USA is viewed as a shit world country.
To be noted: not a cancellation, as no contract had been signed. Also, given the no confidence vote, Portugal will have new elections and new leaders to make these decisions.
We cannot trust an America that threatens its partners with annexation and forges alliances with dictators. These modern systems require IT support to function. The US can simply shut down these systems and render them unusable. Nothing is unthinkable anymore.
Exactly. And that could be just the beginning. If spare parts or software can be used for blackmail, then this mistrust can no longer be talked out of the world.
Canada has also put its purchase of 88 F-35s under review … the very idea of a kill switch that USA could use to override another countries aircraft appalling
Lockheed Martin will lose billions in orders .. Canadas purchase alive is $90 billion
sadly it does uses some US components, the engine for example which lets the US have veto for every sale. Doesnt mean they will use the veto but knowing trump and his bootlickers? i could see them stop the sale just because
oh no! did the massively wealthy and powerful MIC that’s been buying politicians for generations just get their bottom line dented by one of their puppets who just happens to be one of theee dumbest humans to ever hold office ??
AAAHAHAHAHHAHHA !!!!!
Since the US is no longer a reliable partner, Europe is going to have to look elsewhere for its defence needs. On the basis that the life span of that equipment can be very long, the US is damaging not only its short term financial goals but possibly it’s much longer term goals as well!

The Saab Gripen was already the back-up plan if a deal for the F-35s couldn't be reached. No reason not to switch now.
I am well aware of the differences.
Honestly, good.
They favored SAAB JAS 39 Gripen anyway afaik.

The outgoing minister simply raised the possibility of buying European aircraft instead or alongside F-35. No decision about F-35 was actually made.
It's still important, but far more tame than the claim in your post.
