All the dogs we’ve ever had have been strays or rescues, one is an inheritance. When the current 3 are gone, I’m going to a shelter and having them pick out an older dog for me. I know myself well enough to know I can’t go back there, supervised or no.
I got my cat the old fashioned way, she begged for snacks and then latched onto my SO’s leg until she was comfy upstairs. Then she ignored us for a week.
Currently she is sitting in a lap demanding unlimited pets.

My adoption fee was 20 dollars. My human says it was the best money he ever spent.
I think him loaning me 5 dollars to start my Fanduel account so I could bet football was the best money he ever spent. I finished $2.75 to the good this season. 😺
I got all my cats from rescues/shelters. The one we got Lenny and Squiggy from didn't charge a fee, but did a home visit to make sure we had room for them and the living conditions were clean. The rescue I got Miss Smudge from didn't charge me because I donated to them every month for 2 years.
"You can't buy love,... but sometimes you can rescue it." - on a coffee mug.
In a system where we can't get anything without money, we are forced to use it, which is part of the problem. However the cat says, "I get everything without money." Clever little creatures, aren't they. 😺 😻
I am lucky. We only took in strays for 40 years. After our last cat died, we went looking and are now fostering a mature gentleman (in my photo) with medical issues. The shelter would pay everything including food and litter but we only ask them to pay the medical bills - which are considerable.
I've never actually paid an adoption fee. Cat distribution system just loves to push cats at me.. But if you factor in the spay/neuter cost, yeah money does indeed buy happiness!
I don't even have to pay. They just find me. All it takes is direct eye contact and I'm in love with them, made an appointment to have them fixed and treated, and given them a bed of their own in my barn where they are safe, warm, and well fed! I currently have 5 but have had as many as 13. 💖
Money can buy happiness just fine - that saying is a load of rubbish. The trick is to use your money to buy happiness for SOMEONE ELSE. Adopting a pet is a perfect example.
Missy slow rolling into Wednesday. I see she's made it to about 135° but that was a couple hours ago so she must be pretty close to a full-on 180° belly-rub trap by now.
Ours were £90 each but that’s nothing compared to cat food bills, vets bills, pricey toys that they ignore and so on. Worth it, though😊. This is Tigger contravening House Rule 1A - sitting on the kitchen table.
Dino had "issues" after being rescued off the streets and failed his first adoption attempt. That family decided to pay his adoption fee so we made a donation to the rescue group. He lives with two shelter cats that have been with us 14 years.
Cats: The tortie, Stella, came to us with a truncated tail, shelter claimed she was American Bobtail but we're pretty sure that's not the case. The tuxedo, Mitzi, is missing an ear which had to be removed by the vet after a cancerous tumor recurred.
I rescue older dogs. They all come with "issues." So many people are not willing to be patient to let them work through them as they learn they have landed in a safe place. I refer to them as "quirks."
He is the fifth senior dog we've adopted but the most recent three were greyhounds so had been around people their entire life. Since he was rescued off the streets just two years ago we don't know what life experiences formed him.
He's come a long way in the year we've had him. Within the first month he had bitten wife's sister and tried to bite her brother. Now we regularly take him out to busy places and he does great. His one "quirk" is that he will snap at anyone who sticks their face in his face. Do not try to kiss him!
I had that issue for a while with my last rescue. I think he came from a puppy farm. He was turned in at 10, very sickly and skinny. He bit me a couple of times but became more adjusted. With medicine and love, he lived three more years. Thank you for what you do. ✌️
I've never paid a fee, but have rescued six throw-away cats over time. I've lost three of them and still have three (15, 13 & ~2). One passed from lymphoma (at 7), one from end-stage kidney failure (at 19) and one from complications with his mega-colon. It broke our hearts as we lost each of them.
Layla (tortie)was a semi-feral (street kitten) rescue adoption from 4 years ago for $150.
Piglet (tabby) is a special needs (pectus excavatum) rescue adoption from last year for $250
We can’t imagine our lives without them!
Indeed. We have 2 babies, one was given to my daughter at a target. The other we adopted and this was less than 1 year ago. I cannot express how much they have filled our lives. I am a proud cat-nana 😻
Does yours want you to pull big gobs of hair off his back every spring? Our barn thug thought that was just the greatest relief to be done with all that matted fur, even though it left him with bald spots.
I adopted my Parker 13 years ago. He was my BFF, and Soul Dog. Sadly, he crossed the Bridge last year. His adoption fee was the best well spent $60. #AdoptDontShop
We’ve lost so many dogs over the years, but I still miss all of them. I’m so sorry for your loss. I know it gets better, but it never goes away.
Maybe that’s the lesson?
They also said that teleportation isn't real.....so they obviously never tapped on the top of a can of wet cat food and said "psspsspsppspspss" and seen their cat teleport from points unknown right to their feet.
All of mine just seemed to see some invisible sign in my yard that says vacancy all of mine have been free. But I do like the idea of people adopting rescued cats. I just live in an area where cats are just dumped and come to my house.
Yes. And although I have lost quite a few in my lifetime (they were all rescues, some of them older) it doesn’t get any easier. My current two girls are in my profile pic. They are only 4 years old now.
She’s doing great. Has a week off of chemo and then back next week. It’s a very slow process for her because of her kidney issues but she’s moving in the right direction.
You are SO right!
My last cat was free, if I’d just adopt him so the shelter wouldn’t have to deal with his mean spirit any more.
I got quite the deal; Griffin rescued ME.
And the shelter got $100’s from me, in $$ & stuff like blankets when my mom passed and >$200 in cat food when Griff went OTRB.
