Did you know the “weekend” and working only 8 hours per day used to be considered a radical, liberal idea?
139 years ago today, in Bay View, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, 7 workers (including a 13 yo) lost their lives to advance this revolutionary idea.

Many workers (including children) toiled in filthy, hot, cramped and dangerous conditions for 10-16 hours every day.
Life-altering injuries and even death were quite common.

After 2 years of little progress, 340,000 workers went on strike to march on cities across the country on May 1st, 1886.

What started as a peaceful protest turned violent when police attempted to disperse the protesters.

Today this is known as the “Haymarket Affair.”

Governor Jeremiah Rusk sent in the National Guard and ordered them to shoot to kill if workers entered the mills.

Only billionaires hate liberals. They built our society around hate for the poor and always find a way to convince them to give up something to benefit the wealthy. It’s called Peasant Brain

They picked up support from some other groups in society but this was done by the working class.
Liberal is a political stance.
Two things can exist at once.
Deprogram the propaganda that makes you think whole groups of people are somehow beneath you. That is how the rich keep us divided.
Liberalism is not a “stance”, it’s an ideology.
Working class people can identify as “liberal”. But, did they then? No.
I don’t find any historical proof that the workers fighting for the 8 hour day self-identified as “liberal”.
Liberals took the victory then Hung the Anarchists.
The 8-hour day, paid vacations, health care, the end of child labor, and the right to negotiate a contract are all victories paid for with the lives of working-class warriors. No one knows their names.
Now we call it “lazy” to want rest.
That’s Puritan brain rot.
If robots & tech boost output, workers should work less or get paid more, not be told to “do more faster.”
You don’t owe your soul to a spreadsheet.
Fuck that noise. 🛠️🤖⏳
They’re just leveraging the idea of replacing you. They can’t. Not really.
But much of that is a user experience problem.
I’m talking about labor.
Automation does increase output.
So why are we expected to speed up?
The tech is replacing effort, not reducing exploitation.
Convincing people to do the tasks, but faster? That will almost always save the bottom line.
That’s why you you dangle the threat of being replaced. Savings.
I’m not arguing that tech fully replaces labor (yet).
You’re right — a lot of it just shifts the burden.
Now we maintain the machines instead of doing the job directly.
However, workers are told to hustle more to keep up with the machines instead of easing the load.
Efficiency or Hell? 🤷♂️
I watched this happen over a 40 year career in the field of financial oversight and reporting.
Some people work Saturdays too, so 5/8hrs days for most of us is nothing we should be complaining about.
Oh wait, we decided we were willing to put up with all this shit (Sorry Aunty B) and take those 2 hours out of OUR time.
1/4 of it.
We're quite easy to please, aren't we?
So screw you Martin, I was 5 mins late.
I always resented people that only worked 8 hour days!
I was paid well, but because of this, so was my ex-wife.
I got very little out of it.
It's the greedy capitalists imposing the system making it necessary for you to work those cruel hours that deserve your ire.
Knowing who is the real enemy is half the battle.
I get that people in the U.S. don’t understand that liberalism is centre-right, but they never will learn better if we insist on contributing to the erasure of left-wing movements

Possible to go backwards into servitude to the mighty Amazon etc
Just buy a bit less and source some stuff second hand.
No, neither do I.
The oligarchs and the fascists forgot what happened to them the last time The People were pushed too far.
Stick with the truth, it’s plenty powerful enough.
What glares? Sleep is not a reward!
THEREFORE: Your job is 50-70% of your waking life. We sacrifice time away from sleep, family, self care. Growth.
The current system binds us to our jobs and we are happy we are allowed to rest.
Fourteen years after he started doing it, that is.
That’s 50+ years after labor unions started campaigning on it.
Let that marinate, as they say.
Remember the Eight Haymarket Martyrs, murdered by the bosses and their government in the struggle for the Eight Hour Day

Liberals wanted greater production from the mines and mills
That is why Donald loves the uneducated. They will follow blindly that which is against their own happiness and self-interest.
When #slotkin bashes progressives, she not only divides #Dems, she bashes myriad policies/programs that ppl like & DON'T want to lose.
Don't challenge a good social worker on persistence.
Don't challenge a good librarian on intellectual freedom
I myself have to work 10-12 hour days which reduces my 8 hours of what have you and 8 hours of rest
I still have 2 days off but spend 1 just doing normal things and prepping food for the week ahead
Business always includes travel time for the bill but not employees travel time to work
Thats why working from home should be ideal
The corporate structure and real estate holdings of Capitalism won't let that happen

Quit
For 3 days I do jack shit but work, eat, sleep, then I get 1 weekend to go wild, and another weekend to be a responsible adult.
Also only 3 days of commute is good, although I just walk, but it's pretty easy overLl
Back in ye old days (I forget when, I'm not as cool as Isaac with dates. I know my place 😂), people would sleep for about 4- 6 hours, wake up in the middle of the night for about 2-3 hours, -
I love your name! I also just love dicso. 😂
This so called 'radical' idea had already been the standard in Australia for decades prior.

Once again, Australia has been one upped by New Zealand. It was actually the workers on the other side of the ditch that pioneered the 8 hour day.

"Samuel Parnell achieved fame as the founder of the eight-hour working day in New Zealand, a right he had fought for as a carpenter at Petone in early 1840."

Leftists had the idea and they fought for it
Fifteen years old.
This is on page 234 of Jonathan Kennedy's Pathogenesis.
Republicans NOT SO MUCH. Vote 'em out!
I like the idea of the 8 hour work day. I wish it was attainable and I believe it will be one day for everyone.
All my salaried friends work more than 8 in a day.
I started my own business, myself and my employees never work more than 6 hours but we’re all salaried at full time.
Because I said f*** that paradigm.
And the Wobblies pushed it too.
Debs in prison over it and the rest of his radical ideas.
