one of the things i learned to hate most, living in ukraine just before the maidan revolution... it was everywhere, from the slick presidential helipads while people didn't have money for bread, to the bribes you had to pay to slick every administrative state interaction... it is so, so corrosive

It's like Trump saying you'd end covid by not testing anyone. Or putting out a fire by taking the battery out of your smoke alarm.
Here he is explaining how bad it’s gonna be. It is possible to know how bad the corruption can be and still confidently say it was already very bad. In fact it would be irresponsible to say otherwise with the knowledge we have now.
We have undergone a step-change in what is permissible. The Reactionaries won a big victory. The "Century" was intentional, we're heading to Robber Baron time again
And, if you look it up, you'll see that they are getting their reputations whitewashed (they weren't so bad, some were philanthropists at the end) by those looking to repeat
It's going to get worse
There’s no such thing as a free campaign manager.
But being cynical can become self-reinforcing. If you convince yourself that everyone is a scammer and nothing can ever change then you will discount anything that contradicts those beliefs.
Those corrupt people would promise populist policies while keeping the majority of ppl uneducated so that they'll get reelected
Gifts like that have been ingrained in culture and they seem harmless to people.
It takes a generation change for this culture to go away.
This kind of corruption is corrosive to any nation. It’s poison.
