I could see doctors going a little too heavy on the Adderall. Aside from that, how is it over diagnosed when world events are creating the conditions for its very existence in the first place?
Thank you for this. So many women and birthing people hide or underplay the severity of their perinatal mental health difficulties. "Overdiagnosed" is quite the opposite of what we see. 💜
I hope you're attaching some statistics with that. Stuff they can't argue with. And quote human rights law at them too. Otherwise you're failing your members. This letter is too wishy washy, they'll just ignore it.
Can't recall offhand exactly which medical school he trained at,but surely a clinician of his capacity couldn't be wrong? Unless he got his medical qualification in a lucky bag, and he's just spouting hateful, harmful lies without foundation? No?
In a time where young people are commiting suicide every single day? There is a mental health crisis in this country, and they think telling people to pull up their bootstraps is gonna make it better?
I knew this little Tory cunt was bad news for the left.
Wes clearly stated he believes MH issues are being over diagnosed. Everything following is deflection. Policy driven by a belief patients and doctors are 'faking' it (whether deliberately or not).
If he wants better diagnosis then invest in services. Then, and only then, have the discussion.
Absolutely not overdiagnosed! Also, why shouldn't we pursue needs/symptoms to dx, the way we do with physical health?
Better understanding leads to better self care and/or treatment. My MH has massively improved since my ADHD dx, making me much less likely to need meds/support than before. 🤷
I am no expert, so would appreciate the evidence to corroborate or refute, but aren't mental health problems under diagnosed given the time taken to get a referral for assessment 🤔
I know research has estimated that neurodiversity has been under diagnosed significantly, for example statistically valid studies have shown ADHD is likely at least 4 times more prevalent than diagnosed. Short version- Wes Streeting is (again) talking out of his a**e.
Doesn't matter, once the Assisted Dying bill is passed people will have a 'way out' of their situation and this 'government' will cheer it on as your duty to the country.
I hope this has been sent officially to the cowardly Wes Streeting and Keir Starmer so they have to respond and explain why they are lying about mental health conditions being over diagnosed?
So much this. Where’s the open letter I can sign?! Sick to death of govts declaring us as the problem when the system is broken including the education one. If they think this rhetoric is gonna solve it, they’ve got a bad surprise in store for them.
More people are finally having the strength to go and get diagnosed. So yes more people are being diagnosed, but that doesn't mean over diagnosis it means previously mental health has been violently under diagnosed.
Whilst I offer no endorsement of the current govt benefits rhetoric, the explosion of private resources to obtain ADHD & other spectrum diagnosis is a real & present problem, there's no hiding from that.
I didn't want to medicate my ADHD brain (long story, good reasons) & was advised psychistry would help me with some of my itchier social quirks. This was in my dx. Instead, I got OT & was 'taught how to organise a desk'. For a (likely autistic) compulsive cleaner, this seemed beyond farcical. 🤦
Over medicalisation is totally different from over diagnosis. It is very under diagnosed. A lot in the system only get prescriptions and no other support.
Something I have found is that a lot of companies in my industry have altered contracts, so that employees are working longer hours for less money. When things get tough, they will offer the minimal amount of help. How do they expect workers to survive with such a pathetic response?
I don't think so. For the NHS, more diagnoses simply means more work and more costs. There's no profit to be made by it. The benefit is 'only' in improving people's health and lives.
I have suffered with MH conditions since I was a child, I also have physical health conditions, these are due to trauma as a child and adult, I've tried various treatments, none helped, tried working, it made my health worse, I can't help being the way that I am and I feel like I'm being punished
for being this way. If I could work then I'd be working. No amount of money that they remove is going to cure me, it's going to make me worse if anything.
The government is not interested in helping those with mental health issues, it is interested in removing their benefits, shutting them up, forcing them to work through it for their corporate masters.
Bring back Remploy. It'll help give the work that so many struggle to get and also can support and socialise and open up wider employment as experience is gained
Donald Trump is president, and you think mental health is overdiagnosed? 1. It's clearly underdiagnosed in the US. 2. We all have to wonder what is going to blow up in our face, and when, and worry about all the people whose lives are being destroyed by this moron, + everything else going on...!
Saw my GPS earlier. Got prescribed some laxatives and and received an apology that there's nothing they can do to help with my mental health. "I feel like we're failing you... You're asking for help and just not getting it."
Mental health problems caused by people not feeling secure from day to day. The cost of everything goes up but what average Joe gets doesn't . But there are many causes
supposed "overdiagnosis" isn't the issue. the issue is a lack of support/treatment available to those diagnosed with mental illnesses due to NHS MH services being so underfunded. if people were able to access treatment, many would be able to make the progress necessary to return to work but...
...but instead are left on waiting lists while their health deteriorates further - and for many, that lack of early intervention makes recovery far more difficult.
if the govt genuinely wanted to get people back to work/not claiming benefits, their priority would be addressing the issue of
the major lack of funding of MH services & focus on ensuring the appropriate support is accessible to those who are struggling - not targeting the vulnerable by cutting benefits, and both discriminating against and demonising sick people. 😡
I'm disabled and in employment but this discussion has hugely impacted my mental health because I'm so much more worried about how I'll cope if my health worsens and I'm no longer able to work! Removing people's income won't make them any better.
Hi Faith, we're so sorry to hear that you're feeling so worried about these potential changes. We're looking to do a post to show the impact of benefits cuts on real people. Would you be happy for us to use a screenshot of this comment in a post across our social media channels? 1/2
We would include your profile photo in the screenshot but put a black box over your username. Please do give us a shout via our Infoline or Support line if you need mental health support right now 💙 2/2
Also I thought I should share that I was far too unwell to work until I received counselling through Mind that changed my life, allowed me to start university at 28 and I ended up working in benefit advice, so I've come full circle - all thanks to Mind 💙
I've been panicking all day too! I'm not disabled but I do have bipolar disorder and a brain tumour and I've always felt like a ticking time bomb. The fact that I might not have a 'safety net' in the future is pretty frightening.
I've been struggling with mental heath and a nebulous undiagnosed ✨️fatigue✨️ and joint issues, I'm terrified I'm just going to get to the point where I can work, or keep up with chores, but nit both. It's already a struggle on a four day week =/ I can't imagine how bad this is for others.

Not just mental health issues, either, but also endometriosis, POTS and others.

The only team that has contacted me is the one to ‘help me get back to work’
I am currently employed

Which the rich are under no obligation to care about because the U.K poor still haven't risen against the rich.

We in the US have taken profit to the extreme
It's disgusting
Don't head that way
Thanks for trying to help Mind.

Please use the right term
