NEWS Earlier today, Elon Musk said that the Ebola prevention program was deleted by accident but quickly restored. Yet US government officials tell the Washington Post that the program has NOT been restored. Full Story: https://bit.ly/3D53azb

Every single Democratic governor and attorney general needs to do this -- if only to make it clear to voters *right now* that the firings and funding freezes that are about to hurt their states badly are the work of Trump-Musk in Washington. Get ahead of this now, or get blamed for it later.

Good morning. The House voted yesterday to kick millions of off their health care, close rural hospitals, and shut down addiction clinics. All in order to afford a giant tax cut for Elon Musk, Donald Trump and their billionaire and corporate friends.

NEW LAWSUIT: An employee of the VA since 2006, who took law classes at night to get a promotion to the general counsel's office in 2024, was fired as a "probationary" employee because of her recent job change. She is asking a court for her job back. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

1/ I am seeing a lot of comments on the slashing of NIH support along the lines of “universities should just spend their huge endowments.” I’m the last person to cheer on the institutional stratification rising endowments have contributed to. But let me explain why this is not a solution.

Casar: "You know what Elon Musk doesn't seem to be looking into? His own contracts."

“The thing that I can’t get over is that the actual richest man in the world directed my fucking firing. I make $50k a year and work to keep drinking water safe. The richest man in the world decided that was an expense too great for the American taxpayer.”

To probationary federal employees who have been terminated: Democracy Forward has filed a first-of-its-kind class-wide complaint with the Office of Special Counsel. If civil servants want to join in the complaint, you can email [email protected]

Federal workers: The @thebaltimorebanner.com is writing about your experiences. Please consider reaching out to us using the form at the bottom of this story.

I maxed out my credit card, emptied my savings account, and took out a loan to move from Alabama to Bethesda, MD. I don’t even qualify for unemployment since I’ve only worked at NIH for a month. I will be financially and medically devastated. Seeking suggestions for anywhere that’s hiring!!

if I were writing stories about the gov "firing thousands of probationary workers" I would probably rewrite as "firing thousands of new hires -- who are often on a status called "probation" --" because I think the general understanding of "probation" is "in trouble for something they did"

Over the past few weeks, science funding in the U.S. has become shrouded in uncertainty. Ten trainees with diversity-based funding share how the changes are affecting their research and career plans. By @avaskham.bsky.social @claudia-lopez.bsky.social @callimcflurry.bsky.social bit.ly/42Wifxr

@sbn-bsky.bsky.social has released a statement on current events. SBN DEI comm, of which I'm chair, wrote this statement to be people-first focused on the human impacts. I want to thank Peg McCarthy & the Exec Comm in quickly approving the document w/ few edits. This is why SBN is my "home" society.

Serena Williams was on the field longer today than Harrison Butker.

not paying indirect costs for research is like only paying the players in the Super Bowl. can't have a Super Bowl without coaches, referees, security, janitors, announcers, stadium staff, and a stadium - and you can't have research without supporting people and facilities

400,000 jobs at risk in red and blue states across the country. “The N.I.H. funding also supports about 412,000 jobs, from research assistants to grant managers to people who dispose of toxic chemicals”

Executive wants to frame the NIH indirects cut as $4B in savings. But given that NIH returns $2.5 on every $1 investment, this would actually cost US economy a net $6 BILLION (per year!). Not to mention the human costs of wrecking education and research sectors and the communities they serve.

Another wrinkle with a boycott is that the new F format went into effect this month, so if these students have to resubmit for the April cycle they'd presumably have to rewrite portions of their proposal. So much effort goes into these apps, forcing them to revise with little notice is also unfair

@johnshopkinssph.bsky.social Please help us understand why this is the recommendation of your faculty? I have the sense that studies at Hopkins also require animal models to be innovative.

This is really bleak, they're attacking all animal research with the ranking Democrat, Shantel Brown, agreeing with Nancy Mace. Brown goes on to state that AI and 3D printing give us "better and more accurate results" compared to actual biology.

Hi all, I am in contact with a reporter at Science magazine who would like to talk with a trainee or mentor who successfully applied for an equity/DEI-related NIH training grant or a training supplement but have not received the Notice of Award and probably won't get the grant.

"I just want to be clear about what's going on here." - @warren.senate.gov www.youtube.com/watch?v=RIHN...

Reminder that a study on lizard saliva eventually led to the development of Ozempic so be real wary of the criticism of studies and funding that sounds non-sensical when presented with no context.

Senator Andy Kim just went to the USAID building, talked to the security guard there to confirm employees are being barred entry, and then did a press gaggle right there in front to call it out. This is doing something. This is making an effort on messaging. Other Democratic lawmakers: take notes.

NEW: The board president of a small WV nonprofit says they haven't received their HHS funding since the Trump/Musk budget freeze. They had to lay off 3 of 5 employees on Friday. An 86-yr-old woman is counting on them to take her dialysis tomorrow. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

As we watch all mention of diversity actively get scrubbed from the NIH website in real time it's important to know that, we were not taking over anything, we were just trying to exist. - Only 2% of NIH R01 grants are awarded to Black investigators. The goal is total erasure/elimination.
