Three years ago I visited Pacific Grove, CA to photograph overwintering monarchs. There were about 10,000 present at the Sanctuary. There are 52 this year. 52 butterflies. Monarch populations can vary wildly each year, with an overall downward trend. They may rebound next year. But this feels grim.
