Unemployment is higher in rural areas. Some rural areas might see factory construction, but not all of them. So most rural residents will have to move to find employment. But they’ve already demonstrated an inability or unwillingness to move.

IMO, this lie, even under oath, does not amount to a “high crime or misdemeanor”. And yes, since that term is not defined, my opinion on that matter is just as valid as anybody’s opinion to the contrary.

Why was Clinton being asked questions about an affair. Something like that has absolutely no bearing on running the country?
comment in response to

If lying to Congress was such a high crime, almost every President should have been impeached. Lying under oath is different, of course, but in a reasonable world questions about affairs should be off limits.

At one level, I agree with you. But I don’t like the precedent. Impeachment should be limited to “high crimes and misdemeanors”, and it is very arguable that Clinton committed no such offense.

It’s about where it was last September. The trend is not good for USD, but it’s still at about the 5-year average.

That would be a problem. If there’s a perception that they might not be a safe investment, they might be hard to sell. And China and Japan have been reliable purchasers at rollover time.

The are no Treasury Bonds that are subject to “renewal”. When a bond matures, the Treasury must pay principal to the owner. In most cases, the Treasury will fund the payment by issuing new bonds.
comment in response to

That’s not how it works. If either or both want to sell, they have to find a buyer. They can’t force the US Treasury to redeem the bonds.

Probably true. But we can find flaws in almost anybody if we look hard enough. So the question isn’t whether they sucked, it’s whether they did any good.

The guy is going to go bankrupt because China is no longer a customer. Prices will actually go down for soybeans in the US. Ergo, not a problem for me. So I shouldn’t care, right?

I think the real argument is that the Israelis are entitled to their land because they’re living there now. Any Palestinian claims that they’re entitled for historic reasons are additionally false, because the Jews were there before the Palestinians.

The US has been a big beneficiary of free trade. Tariffs are not good for the US. They may be of benefit to certain businesses, but they encourage retaliation, which is bad for other businesses.

How does a tariff on parts but not finished products level the playing field?

Parrots aren’t that stupid.

This might sound stupid, but at least he’s not ignoring the fact that almost every person on Earth has the religion of their parents.

According to Hassett, prices won’t go up because suppliers will cut prices. According to his colleagues appearing on other shows, prices will go up enough for manufacturing in the US to be profitable (which means prices will go up a lot.) But they all agree that rich people need a tax cut.

Tariffs are actually one of the few things he can do unilaterally, because Congress made a mistake and delegated the authority to the President.

It’s particularly bad for retired people, who have no chance to get offsetting increases to their income.

Apparently the real danger of having your TV too high is that you lose your sense of humor.

Even simpler: Vance runs for President with Trump as his VP, Vance promising to resign immediately after inauguration. That actually seems somewhat feasible.
comment in response to

Somebody else gets elected in 2028, the VP resigns, Trump is appointed as VP, the elected President resigns, Trump becomes President. Not likely, but completely legal.

These “news” shows where they interview people and sit around a table expressing opinions are worthless, and have always been worthless. They could report on John Thune’s voting patterns; they don’t need to ask him about them.

Cast iron is the best. The only downside is the weight. You can get a really good sear on meats, and it’s non-stick enough to cook omelets with only a smidgeon of butter.

There is a not-so-fine line between seasoned and coated with rancid oil.

There might be some people who mount their TVs too high just to be controversial.
comment in response to

No. I don’t like high TVs, but I sometimes use a little soap on my cast iron pans. But maybe I’m unique in that respect.

How’s your neck? TV too high.

We should also take measures to protect unhealthy people. This “every man for himself” attitude is unworthy of a modern society. (From what I’ve read, it isn’t how ancient societies operated, either.)

I’ve got news for the orange idiot. Nobody is building an auto plant in a country with price controls.

I like the tush push. It increases the probability of making a first down with short yardage, which reduces the number of kicks.

When the dust settles, Musk and the Tesla board are going to be the defendants in a huge class action lawsuit for their misrepresentations of Tesla’s business prospects.

By your standards the US has always been fascist. So saying “Trump is fascist” means nothing, even by your standards.

I really don’t see how instigating a shutdown helps Democrats. The government still works for most people during a shutdown, and would allow Republicans to say “see, we really don’t need all that extra stuff.”
comment in response to
post
Sure, when Republicans were a minority they could do a lot, because they were happy throwing a wrench in the gears. If you actually want the government to function, you have fewer options. In this case, no good options.
comment in response to
post
How does it force them (Republicans) to negotiate? They don’t care if the government is shut down, especially if they can blame it on Democrats.
comment in response to
post
A government shut-down is exactly what Republicans want. The only thing that ever stops them is that they will get blamed.

It’s like a 10% wealth tax. Republicans always seen to do that. Lower taxes, market crash. This time they didn’t even get around to lowering taxes before the market crash.

2/. How do trans girls fit in? As you say, there isn’t much data. It doesn’t seem fair to exclude them from sports entirely. On the other hand, if they have an inherent physical advantage, that doesn’t seem fair either. It doesn’t seem like there is an easy solution.
