A bunch of military spouses were probationary federal employees and have just been laid off by the deranged Trump/Musk effort to gut the U.S. government. edition.cnn.com/2025/02/20/p...

Parenting achievement unlocked: Getting your preschooler jamming to CCR and The Velvet Underground

I edited this piece by my amazing colleague @meghanbartels.bsky.social and it really helped me. I hope it can help you too: 🧪

Tyranny requires your fear, your silence, and your compliance. Democracy requires your courage.

I'm normally cynical about politicians but this is statesmanship. It is affirming republican civic virtue. Not irony-poisoned snark, not focus-grouped talking points. The oath to the Constitution matters, and it's time to speak plainly and earnestly about how our fundamental principles are at stake.

Trump rode to political prominence on birtherism and spent the last month of his campaign claiming that Haitians were eating cats. The rise of authoritarianism in America *must* be understood as a misinformation crisis.

Of course it doesn't matter that congestion pricing was working, as this is part of the broader program of theatrically wrecking shit as part of the broader campaign against any new thing. But it was working incredibly well.

"At California’s Yosemite National Park, the Trump administration fired the only locksmith on staff on Friday. He was the sole employee with the keys and the institutional knowledge needed to rescue visitors from locked restrooms." www.washingtonpost.com/climate-envi...

“Due to the large scale termination of Forest Service employees, Franklin Falls and the Denny Creek Trailhead are CLOSED,” the sign read as of Saturday morning. “This site will reopen when we return to appropriate staffing levels.”

Musk Fired America’s Disabled Veterans

Accidentally fired the guys running the nuclear program. Accidentally fired experienced air traffic controllers. Accidentlly fired the people trying to contain the bird flu.... Accidentally fired...

The most shocking thing about this is that anyone took him at his word.

USDA says it accidentally fired officials working on bird flu and is trying to rehire them In a statement, an Agriculture Department spokesperson told NBC News that officials are "working to swiftly rectify the situation." www.nbcnews.com/politics/dog...

“You take for granted that you can drink the water out of your faucet. You can do that because of the EPA.” grist.org/regulation/d...

House Natural Resources Dems, led by @rephuffman.bsky.social, are looking for stories from federal workers impacted by recent horrible actions. This is an effective way to communicate directly with Congress - Ana is the lead staffer. Please share widely. www.linkedin.com/posts/anaunr...

DOGE in practice: Disabled Army veteran who has 4 kids and did 3 tours overseas is fired from his job at Bronx VA hospital

Bright passionate people who wanted to dedicate their lives to public service were fired in a mass email over the holiday weekend. This has absolutely nothing to do with efficiency, fraud, waste, or abuse. And your life will be worse because of it.

Firings happening right now at the NSF.

When people tell you who they are, believe them.

A proposal: Academic researchers and folks in similar positions, consider writing an op-Ed, or at least a letter to the editor, in your local paper about what these horrific decisions will do to jobs and services *in your local community*. I train scientists to write op-Ed’s and I can help.

The Washington Post pulled an ad that was set to run in some editions on Tuesday calling for Elon Musk to be fired from his role in government, a group that ordered the ad said. It would have covered the front and back pages of editions delivered to the White House, the Pentagon and Congress.

1. OSHA has ordered the digital and physical destruction of 18 publications on workplace safety practices, according to an email obtained by Popular Information. The email says the publications have been removed from the web and tells staff that physical copies should be "disposed of or recycled"

I have started to hear about specific National Cancer Institute firings of experts and professionals that will have immediate impacts, like regarding the safety of drugs in clinical trials and so on. They are trying to kill people with cancer.

“The thing that I can’t get over is that the actual richest man in the world directed my fucking firing. I make $50k a year and work to keep drinking water safe. The richest man in the world decided that was an expense too great for the American taxpayer.”

This is literally what happened with Twitter -- firing people before you realized that you needed and having to whoopsie call them back in. It's beyond stupid.

Oobleck is a non-Newtonian fluid--it feels solid when you push against it, but will pour out of containers like a liquid. You can find a recipe here busytoddler.com/how-to-make-... 🧪

Did some weekend morning science with baking soda and colored vinegar and made some oobleck.

It’s very interesting how media outlets like 404 and Wired who do tech and not DC cocktail party circuit slop have covered the Musk angle best because their guiding light isn’t getting a ticket to next weeks book release party in Georgetown

This story by @arminda.bsky.social was my quiet source of joy this week. Ridiculous cooking method? ✔️ A whole heap of eggs cooked in the name of science? ✔️ Plot twist at the end? ✔️ 🧪

I passed by federal workers & Washingtonians — significant crossover — protesting DOGE outside of the Department of Health and human Services in Washington. I heard them singing from blocks away. I never tire of seeing my fellow Americans exercise our First Amendment rights in these civic spaces.

Like we said:

I am going to be so pissed if--after everything--I do, in fact, die of dysentery.

Measles cases by U.S. state before and after the measles vaccine.

RFK Jr. officially confirmed to head HHS, with only McConnell breaking ranks to vote no. He'll oversee a $1.8 trillion agency, and have vast power to influence vaccines, public health & national policy In his hearings, he expressed openness to restricting abortion nationally.

🧪Texas measles outbreak (fueled by vaccine exemptions for "religious beliefs") perfectly timed for Republican senators to approve an anti-vax Secretary of Health and Human Services. At least 14% of K-12 kids in Gaines County, TX are not vaccinated. apnews.com/article/meas...

This is truly a disaster for public health in this country.
