What's the best state? JERSEY is the best state! Who wants to help @annikabarber.bsky.social and me organize the NJ Stand Up for Science rally? @standupforscience.bsky.social @booker.senate.gov @kim.senate.gov

Glad to see the grinding halt of NIH grant review and funding decisions covered in the @bostonglobe.com but why are we framing this as “mysterious” or question whether it was intentional??? FFS people. www.bostonglobe.com/2025/02/22/m...

Guardian story about Federal Register issue is up. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

This lawsuit was not granted a restraining order, but it is still ongoing! I am still collecting stories from illegally fired federal workers as possible testimony for the case. You can testify anonymously. Need people from NM, AZ, CA, CT, MD, MI, MN, NV, OR, WA, RI, VT. DM me for details!

This is the first movement from Sen. Fetterman, please fill out immediately if you have been impacted. Please circulate Penn, Pitt, PSU, Temple etc @cbartman.bsky.social

The presidents of all universities should hold a press conference together at the National Press Club in Washington DC condemning the attacks on science and universities and outline the stakes for all Americans. 1/

I'm glad major news outlets are finally covering this, although I think NPR gave way too much space to easily debunked quotes about how this is "typical for a new administration". No. The scale of the meeting cancellations and the grant backlog that's happening now is completely unprecedented.

ProPublica is recording the casualties of the DOGE purge, highlighting the scale of what is being lost as public health programs and seasoned experts are caught in the Trump administration’s blunt-force drive to shrink the federal government. Bravo @plos.org! US exec orders "stand in direct conflict with our core values, our mission, edit policies" "PLOS will not compromise on issues of scientific rigor & editorial integrity... we seek diversity because more expert voices make for better science" theplosblog.plos.org/2025/02/plos...

Six fired federal employees told me and @alexviveros.bsky.social about their science-related jobs — and what the public could lose without them. We talked to people from NIH, FDA, FAA, NPS, the Forest Service, and Fish & Wildlife for @sciencenews.bsky.social. www.sciencenews.org/article/fire...

So. It has officially happened. I have been officially let go from my position at CDC. I wasn’t a probationary employee. I had stellar performance reviews every year. I’ll be ok. But please understand that many worked HARD to get into these positions and were doing great public health work.

Returning at least temporarily to regularly scheduled programming - Always so wonderful to see ex lab members doing well. Here is a nice paper from ex postdoc Yanxun Yu. rdcu.be/eaLUW

“We’re fucked.” Good write-up in Nature on how the current administration has used the Federal Register as a workaround to block NIH spending without seeming to violate the injunction against the spending freeze. If it’s not rectified by September, billions of $$ for science research will be lost.

Here are some data documenting the funding "pause" pulled from NIH Reporter. Current results (FY25) (Red) are compared with results from FY21 (first year of Biden Administration) and FY24. Note that data from Reporter lag behind release of NoAs by ~1 week. I will be tracking this going forward.

I sit on a committee for the Excellence in ScComm awards. This afternoon, I wrote to my fellow members that unless & until @nationalacademies.org “actively combat political censorship instead of capitulating to illegal, racist demands, I will not participate in any further service on their behalf.“

Regarding CSR Study Sections: SROs are apparently being told that their communication to their valued reviewer colleagues must be: "The xxxx meeting will be rescheduled for a later date, yet to be determined. Thank you for the time you've invested in the reviews. Signed by CSR SRO" Please be kind

Vought, Project 2025 writer/director of OMB wants to traumatize civil servants: “We want the bureaucrats to be traumatically affected…When they wake up in the morning, we want them to not want to go to work because they are increasingly viewed as the villains ... We want to put them in trauma.”

If the block on the Federal Register isn’t removed in the next few months, I fear a majority of labs will close within a year. This small procedural wrench has the power to kill US science indefinitely, losing an entire generation of discovery and innovation.

The DOGE firings have nothing to do with “efficiency” or “cutting waste.” They’re a direct push to weaken federal agencies perceived as liberal. This was evident from the start, and now the data confirms it: targeted agencies overwhelmingly those seen as more left-leaning. 🧵⬇️

Upon learning that yesterday would be my last day as a program officer at the National Science Foundation, I shared this parting message with my colleagues. The next few months will be frenetic and stressful for them. Here are some things that you can do to help them with the mission ahead. (1)

NEW: The Trump administration has just told a federal judge in a court filing that it will not comply with the court's order to resume funding for USAID and State Department foreign assistance.

"I don't know what NSF is going to be now, but it's not more efficient. It's just a mess." My story on today's firings and their impact. www.npr.org/2025/02/18/n...

💥ATTENTION FEDS💥 All the termination letters going out that we've seen use "inadequate performance" as the reason for termination. SAVE YOUR PERFORMANCE EVALUATIONS. Tell your friends who aren't on bluesky! Probationary employees can't be fired for "poor performance" if their performance is not poor

An absolute honor to be named as a Sloan Fellow. Many thanks to my mentors, colleagues and @emoryuniversity.bsky.social for their support. Biggest thanks to my lab for making the journey fun and worthwhile! Many congratulations to all the other fellows!

Pretty sad. Just got the email that CZI is canceling the second round of Diversity Leadership Awards. Private industry will definitely not fill the hole that NIH and NSF are leaving. 😢💔

A large portion of grants awarded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health cannot be funded for the foreseeable future because of an indefinite hold on submissions to the Federal Register, according to an email reviewed by The Transmitter. By @avaskham.bsky.social bit.ly/3X8ngz8

Yes to all of this, and: there’s no savings from laying these folks off because CONGRESS PASSED A SPENDING BILL TO PAY THEM and there’s no constitutional mechanism that lets the executive take back what Congress tells it to spend!

Firings are happening right now at the National Science Foundation. Essential staff are being cut. This isn’t about the budget. If it was, they’d be going after the military (17%) or state appropriations (38%). NSF is 0.7% of the federal budget. All federal employees make up only 4% of the budget.

NEW: NSF confirmed that they fired 168 employees today, out of their staff of ~1,500 feds. This includes some people who'd finished their 1-year probationary periods, which were extended to 2-years last month without explanation. More to come.

Trying my best to focus on some positive science content. We feel so grateful to have our work highlighted on the cover of @naturecellbiology.bsky.social! This beautiful #astrocyte reconstructed from the raw data images used in the paper. Most of which are never typically seen! rdcu.be/d5ADz

Federal workers, we recognize that this is an unpredictable time. Our team is actively pairing your tips with reporters on this list and across our newsroom to make sure you're speaking to someone with the right expertise. How to get in touch:

NIH meetings are still not being announced in the federal register, so nearly all study sections and councils after this week are not going to happen. This is basically a freeze on funding new grants...

Adding "googling all my POs, SROs, and GMSs to see if they've been in their job for more than 2 years" to the list of things I never thought I'd be doing in this job

A quick summary from the end of another long day... Some, but not all, tenure track investigators within their first 2 years did receive termination emails. I have not yet been able to determine why some did and not others. Even with one branch, there was variability. 1/n

American institutions—from the media to Congress—continue to underreact to the unraveling of our democracy. Overseas our media would not hesitate to call what we’re living through a full-blown autocratic coup. Here's my attempt at the story they should write: www.doomsdayscenario.co/p/musk-trump...
