Cloistear go minic anois nach bhfuil an Ghaeilge comhoiriúnach le Éire ilchultúrtha. Ach, tá fear ón bPalaistín ag teagasc na hAraibise trí Ghaeilge. We often hear now that Irish is not compatabile with a multicultural Ireland. But there is a Palestinian man teaching Arabic through Irish.

🧵 I want to follow up this earlier thread by examining why the USA finds itself in the state it does at the moment; the process of disordered discourse capturing state institutions and how it inevitably results in a slide towards authoritarianism, a process we're seeing unfold before our very eyes.

On 16 Sept 1642 Rosa O'Doherty signed this letter. Here it is for #InternationalWomensDay2025 , 383 years later. This is possibly a unique surviving example of a 17thC signature of a #Gaelic Irishwoman. (The letter is now in @ucdarchives part of the Franciscan collection)

This is a very thoughtful piece.

Love this thread 🤣

So much going on in this photo!

Wow the German exit poll

The merger between Musk's interests and American national ones underway, it seems.

Ó ghiolc x.com/Buailtin/sta... Listen to Misha Yerhidzé, a 10 year old Ukranian boy who fled the war with his mother just over two years ago and settled in Baile an Fheirtéaraigh, in the West Kerry Gaeltacht. He has embraced the language and music of his new community.

It won't happen, but the potential for dramatic irony here...

So much truth in this.

Umberto Eco put together a now-famous list of 14 attributes of fascistic states. I'm going to discuss each of them in hopes this helps ppl understand that fascism is not just a buzzword. We're going to go through these by theme, so strap in. 🧵

What a line! "I expect you will eventually find someone who is enough of a fool, or enough of a coward, to file your motion. But it was never going to be me."

Well played, Moldova.

Performative public lying is a hallmark of far right authoritarian parties & regimes

"Atypical risk" 🤦‍♀️

Thought that since some people like to talk endlessly about saving women's sports that I'd make a list of the most pressing issues that need addressing to improve the lives of female athletes. Would be awesome if these folks took a break from the one-note culture war to help address these.

Me watching an, objectively thrilling, English win that directly benefits my team.

Fascinating thread

I'm looking to speak to people who have changed their names in some way to fit in or for others' convenience since moving to Ireland. Get in touch if this is you and you don't mind sharing your story. 🙏🏽

New. Keir Starmer watched a game at Wolves alongside an ‘executive’ from an Asian gambling platform – a man that all parties have refused to identify. By @journoandy.bsky.social, @jackkerr.bsky.social, @stevemenary.bsky.social, @philippeauclair.bsky.social josimarfootball.com/2025/02/04/m...

Thrilling, baffling yet energising - What fresh economic opportunities might Genghis Khan's monumental million-skull structure portend for Merv?

Happy "February is the start of spring, and the rest of the world is wrong" to all who celebrate

There's appreciating Antoine Dupont's undoubted superlative talent on the rugby field and then there's this . . . Calm down 🇫🇷!

I have never agreed with a politician more.

Me at Crooked Timber about how our leaders' fear that we might be "left behind" on the road to growth redefines the very nature of progress away from the vision of a functioning and humane society

Best part of a fascinating thread (try to read those fast!)

I don't have an answer to this, but I am glad to know WWI training manuals started with the fundamentals.

And getting people to nod along and agree that they didn't see it is part of the point.

Nobody ever made a bigger technological breakthrough than the person who looked at this and imagined a blanket.

This is exactly my kind of pedantry...

With so many US social media HQs for Europe based in Dublin - and their compliance with EU law regulated by Irish agencies - this places Ireland at the eye of yet another coming transatlantic storm. Huge pressures building up on 🇮🇪. Major challenges ahead. Also major job for Commissioner McGrath.

I haven’t seen Nosferatu yet, but this is fascinating on the original Dracula.

I do not, nor will I ever, know whether I'm on Camden street, Aungier street or George's Street. I refuse to learn.

Something I should have added is that WW1/WW2 naval warfare is often HMS Fluffy Kitten vs the Ripper Von Mürderboat. With the Von Mürderboat either losing or coming away needing serious emotional and physical support. Never judge a Royal Navy vessel by her name. (Unless it's a Tribal Class)

Just an incredible opportunity from 1935

Decided this was the season for the 3-day foccacia from Nicola Lamb's "Sift" book. Thanks to my nephew, over its three days, the foccacia has acquired a name ("Bob") and rich inner life, including last night's attempted escape from confinement (gas bubbles blowing lid off). Anyway, it's bake time!
