I think contemporaneous w/ this was a fraudulent farming scheme involving cats and rats... feed the rats to the cats, skin the cats and sell the coats for $$, then feed the cat remains back to the rats. "Nothing but profit!" they promised.
Hello I am Mahmoud from Gaza. Our house was destroyed and my father died in the war. Please, donate to me to buy food. We do not have food. We are facing mass starvation. Please🥹🙏 https://gofund.me/ecc3028d
They talked about the frogs but not the arrest. My husband found out about it many years later. (It even made Time magazine!) Broel's daughter has a frog museum (among other displays) in NOLA, and we met her a few years ago. She didn't know of the arrest either.
Details on the suspects' background were ...sketchy...

And just where were those "donktown offices?" Can't blame auto-correct
Funnily enough, currently working on a paper related to a 1930s frog-based scheme (albeit at first much more scientific than commercial) that was ultimately successful (pregnancy testing using African clawed frogs).
My husband grew up on a rural property whose previous owner had stocked the pond with bullfrogs for exactly this purpose. He said the noise in the summer was deafening.
Nobody was beating down their door to buy them, surprisingly.
I came across a bunch of old magazines from the 20s–40s while cleaning out a relative's attic a few years ago. It was wild how many different get-rich-quick-raising-weird-animals ads there were back then.
I know well into the 60s you could mail order a monkey because the kid down the street got one that way. His parents didn’t know about it until it arrived and they heard scratching from inside the package. They let him keep it.
I suspect it didn’t live long after the neighbor kid received it and boasted about having it, because we never heard about it again. Either that or it escaped and found its way to one of our feral monkey colonies.
Now Get This!
We feed the rats to the cats
And the cats to the rats
And get the cat skins for nothing
The rats to the cats
And the cats to the rats
And get the cat skins for nothing
haha also came to say this! Gareth's "mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm, keep goin' bud, I'll stop you if I hear anything weird" was on display so much in that episode. It's one of my favorite Garethisms
You never heard of Sea Monkeys? I was born in 1950, so I was seeing ads for them in the late 50s + early 60s. Earlier than 1970 when someone wrote they saw these. I think, it's late + tired. BUT this is such a great thread! Frog's legs + you met a relative! Thanks for the needed smiles + laffs re 🔥

So I raise hundreds of frogs....and then what?
How do I get their legs in a can?
I could be a raiser of frogs
“I can’t eat frog legs. I always wonder - what did they do with the rest of the frog? Do they give ‘em little wheelchairs?”
Nobody was beating down their door to buy them, surprisingly.
......wait, frog canning? 😨

I'm old enough to remember my grandparents getting into the chinchilla thing but, I guess, too old to have watched much Brady Bunch.
