“In the theater, a bad dress rehearsal means a good performance. I actually am quite sure that’s not the case in public health.” For an HHS secretary to not encourage vaccination loudly and clearly is shameful. www.nytimes.com/2025/03/02/h...

Might have something to do with it?

I want to give the benefit of the doubt, that this due to maintenance, a server down, or even malware. And not a targeted throttling of a massive, critical scientific database. The problem is, now, I have to even ask that question.

Was just listening to @geripal.bsky.social with @nathanielchinmd.bsky.social about cog evaluation in primary care and what will be the role blood-based biomarkers ⬇️ like these ⬇️ #gerisky

Idk, seems relevant "...every $1 spent on childhood immunizations results in a savings of approx. $11. With discounted vaccine prices, every $1 spent on [Vaccines for Children] program results in even further savings." VFC = funded by CMS -> Medicaid #medsky #FMsky #PedSky tinyurl.com/xjwjax9w

Substance use disorder is a complex issue which clinical practice is changing rapidly. On this podcast episode Janet Ho, Sach Kale, and @juliechilders.bsky.social talk about the intersection of opioid use disorder and serious illness. #Palliativecare #palliative #medsky geripal.org/pc-for-patie...

Rubio terminated 5800 USAID contracts – more than 90% of its foreign aid programs – in defiance of the courts. Here’s a list of just some of the lifesaving awards that were terminated. Nearly all were Congressionally mandated. They’ve saved millions of lives. 🧵

I am so exhausted. This is so profoundly stupid and so thoroughly misunderstands the concept of addiction that anyone who even suggests it should be immediately disqualified for the position this crank currently occupies.

Bravo @plos.org! US exec orders "stand in direct conflict with our core values, our mission, edit policies" "PLOS will not compromise on issues of scientific rigor & editorial integrity... we seek diversity because more expert voices make for better science" theplosblog.plos.org/2025/02/plos...

Over 6 million people in the U.S. have Alzheimer's disease (AD), a number that may rise significantly in the near future. The Trump administration's cuts to the NIH Center for Alzheimer's & Related Dementias will set back critical research efforts. #geronsky newrepublic.com/article/1917...

Wheelchairs are 1) Expensive 2) Not trivial to replace 3) Often customized to the person's specific needs, adding to time/$$ to replace 4) Covered by insurance only Once per "x" years (x = 1-5) 5) Vital to a person's function and QOL Airlines are lucky to only cover repair or wc costs.

In a new Editorial, JAMA editors, JAMA Network Editors in Chief, and JAMA editorial leadership address the recent executive orders that have impacted the scientific process and reaffirm their commitment to scientific and editorial integrity. ja.ma/4b5LsIt

RFK Jr. thinks that a clinical trial should be done for the entire childhood vaccine schedule. Here’s why that will never happen. 1. You can’t do a randomized trial of something that we already know is safe and effective. There would have to be a placebo group that didn’t get vaxxed. Unethical.

Delirium is an underrecognised risk factor for future dementia...sometimes preventable, and perhaps treatable if we prioritise research in this area @amaclullich.bsky.social @proflizsampson.bsky.social @gerisoc.bsky.social inews.co.uk/news/health/...

The healthcare of U.S. veterans will suffer under the Trump administration, which has fired more than 1000 employees of the Department of Veterans Affairs. #medsky taskandpurpose.com/news/veteran...

1- I am continuing to document various NIH webpages describing the impact of NIH-funded research. It is amazing to be reminded about all these advances in healthcare over the last few decades. Next up: Improving Health > Immune System #medsky www.nih.gov/about-nih/wh...

Quite the flu season we're having. Here are some thoughts. I finish up by wondering why we'd reduce CDC workforce at a time like this -- just unfathomably short-sighted. blogs.jwatch.org/hiv-id-obser...

Ah, so the federal government is getting into the business of prior-auths. One of the most popular aspects of your health care system, right.

1- I was heartened when I got a message from the NIH today about my grant submission, but I'm going to keep documenting the "Impact of NIH Research" pages. Today, it's Improving Health -> Heart, Lung, and Kidney Health AND Genetic Diseases www.nih.gov/about-nih/wh... www.nih.gov/about-nih/wh...

This would put older adults on the streets. Period.

Thank you, @uwmadison.bsky.social, for this statement regarding the NIH funding cuts. #medsky news.wisc.edu/uw-madison-r...

When Elon was a kid, survival for ALL, the most common childhood cancer, was <10% Now it’s >90% due to funded collaboratives (high indirect costs) whose work ultimately SAVES THOUSANDS OF LIVES EVERY YEAR. For other cancers there’s still so much progress to be made. I think it’s worth it.

Like most of primary care, Geriatrics isn't financially viable. UW-Madison has a leading Geriatrics division because of its well-funded NIH research arm. That also supports clinical work and training, like my fellowship. You have Geriatricians because of strong NIH funding! #gerisky #medsky

1- Nursing home residents are being prescribed more gabapentin/pregabalin (gabapentinoids). Why? The authors conducted two surveys of a small sample (N=78) of nursing home clinicians to find out? #geronsky #medsky @agsjournal.bsky.social agsjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....

"Silence is not an option right now,” said one advisory board member... “I try to use the term unprecedented sparingly, but I believe this is an unprecedented moment. There will be dire consequences if they do not restore this information and it may not come back if we do not speak out.”

Because we already spend a ton on women's health research. Especially on areas that effect older women #gerisky Yeah, no⬇️⬇️ 😑😑 www.nature.com/articles/d43...

The NIH Office of Research on Women’s Health was created in 1990. Women’s health issues didn’t exist before then. (actually most people just didn’t care) I’m sure the website is down because we’ve solved all those problems. /s

I think RFK he’s answer here is instructive. His implication here is that the patient is at fault for their health issue, and he makes no mention of systemic reasons why the patient was smoking and what barriers to cessation might exist. 1/3

#medsky #pedsky #vaccines #aap #vaccineliteracy I wanted to repost the AAP's highlight of these powerful quotes from fellow pediatricians as we enter a new political landscape and CDC leaving the WHO. I urge everyone to consider vaccinations for their children!

To help people understand the importance of NIH, share what you’ve used their funding for (in easily understandable terms). I’ll start: my NIH postdoc funding helped me develop and test AI tools that could identify skin cancer across diverse skin tones.

I once went on RFKj r’s campaign website to look at the studies he cites. He cites studies like a college freshman fighting for their life to finish a term paper hours before it’s due. The studies are old or disproven, or have a throwaway sentence he glommed onto that contradicts the conclusions.

Medicaid covers about 1/2 of all LTSS. And 1/3 of that is for nursing homes.

We are doing a GeriPal podcast on caring for people with serious illness and substance use this Thursday with some amazing palliative care & addiction medicine providers. What burning questions do you have (some of mine are below) #medsky #palliative #hospice

It's unaffordable in general. Those without means have limited access. Those with relative means run out of it fast. Few people know health insurance *does not* cover LTSS (with few exceptions). A plan was even proposed this last election cycle. @amyklobuchar.com let's push for at least that

Thalidomide would like a word...

Alcoholism doesn’t make people lie under oath about showing up to work so drunk that they passed out. Alcohol doesn’t make people commit sexual assault or yell hate speech. It is offensive to people with substance use disorder to assign them the malignant and antisocial traits that Hegseth displays

Those of use with HRSA grants are on edge. Not like we're doing anything important like, f.e., evaluating care for a growing older adult population.

Let's break down Trump's executive orders focused on destroying our environment. (1/9)
