one thing i keep thinking about is how there is simply no way to design a constitutional system that can resist authoritarian incursion if participants in that system do not actually care that much

The book Dying of Whiteness by Jonathan Metzl examines the phenomenon shown here. White right-wingers are so invested in white supremacy that they’ll support politicians and policies that literally kill them and those they love. It’s their Faustian bargain.

"We had a good thing you stupid son of a bitch, we had Russia preoccupied, we had OPEC cuts, we had everything we needed and it all ran like clockwork. You could have shut your mouth, let us drill, and made as much money as you needed, but you just had to blow it up, you and your pride and your ego"

Very excited for this. I loved Tweetbot, and I almost got Ivory. Once Bluesky took off and became my main thing, it was hard to justify getting an app I wasn’t realistically gonna use much. I can’t wait to see Phoenix!

When Hitler started ranting about the Jews from streetcorners in the 1920s, he was part of a long history of European anti-Semitism. But where in the world did this massive anti-trans campaign come from? I feel like it was invented out of whole cloth in the last five years.

The Democrats in DC do not think they are at war. The GOP is at war. That explains what's been happening.

conservative evangelicals spent a quarter century explicitly tying their religious identity to the most extreme and jingoistic forms of american nationalism up to and including embracing one of the worst degenerates this country has ever produced and they refuse to take responsibility for it

Meme in real life

Aside from the obvious direct harm, what's so irritating is that a handful of spoiled ignorant assholes are breaking things that we all built together. They weren't content to own almost everything, they had to wreck what little they didn't own. It's vandalism on a mass scale and has to be punished

Not my most eloquent letter, but utterly sincere....

The phrase “President Obama” broke their lil brains.

And this is where the opposition should focus the majority of our attention. Corruption is easy to understand, and it will stick to him. Every step he takes is corrupt. Every move he makes is corrupt. Rinse and repeat ad infinitum. Corruption Corruption Corruption

This is not law. It couldn’t withstand legal scrutiny. Don’t comply in advance university presidents. General counsel, don’t panic. Do law, not vibes.

Required reading about Trump's preferred method of governing--Patrimonialism, which is also Putin's preferred method & most criminal organizations--where only loyalty matters. Its weaknesses? Corruption and Stupidity. Sound familiar? This is how we fight it. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

As McMahon assumes leadership of the Department of Education—potentially to oversee its attempted end—we should remember that DoE is devoted largely to: 1) ensuring schools comply with civil rights law and 2) protecting the rights of students with disabilities. This is a mission worth defending.

Clever idea as long as 1) the Dems actually do it en masse and 2) GOP don’t block the exits. Dems also need a prepped, simple, clear explanation for the cameras if they go with this.

Thank you, Senator!

Lol we're all in hell.

One more time with feeling

None of us can be sure what will “work.” You try multiple things and find your way in. Read some histories of the Civil Rights Movement by those who participated. They were never “sure” of what would work. Some campaigns fizzled out. But persistence, creativity, determination, and focus were key.

They're calling it the Trump Slump.

just gonna be the thousandth person to remind you all that segregationists start the open bigotry with people they feel they can target most easily but do not end there

Of course there’s no plan to deliver accurate info. The point is to have a monopoly on information, not to actually inform people. It’s to make dear later the unquestioned authority of what counts as fact. It’s straight out of 1984.

The first measles death in the US in a decade -- the tragic, preventable death of a child whose parents chose not to protect them with vaccination -- should spark an immediate nation-wide campaign to ensure all children are protected against preventable diseases. Anything less is unconscionable.

Martha isn’t wrong, especially if we think about culture as a collection of habits or dispositions towards action that accommodate the practitioners to a similarity in viewpoint. They are advocating for a world where the very ways of being in the world tend towards sameness.

Utterly destroying any capacity of the state to help people so that it can be reduced to a military and and border cops to guard the wealth of oligarchs

With another set of news headlines about political elites using “””Roman salutes””” I just want to note that the Nazi salute means “I want to murder your family” and the n-word means “I want to lynch you.” That’s what they mean, they make me righteously angry, and I won’t let anybody minimize them.

We need to stop answering the “what did you do last week?” question. That cedes the idea that any of us owe Phony Stark an account of ourselves. If you feel compelled to respond, just say, “I owe you nothing. You’re not my boss,” and leave it at that.

The basic idea that prompted the colonies to separate from the UK was no kings. The simplicity and straightforwardness makes it so valuable. You can chant it or put it on shirts and stickers. You can blanket public spaces. You can write it in sharpie on a Trump sticker you see at a stoplight.

AOC for president. The only damn person in that world making any sense.

@arseblog.com @gunnerblog.bsky.social Goodly morning, guys. Does Merino’s brace mean he should start at striker or is he a better striker option from the bench, either as plan B or to give tired defenses something different later on?

This is the way. My only note is that we also need to think through ways to fight back they aren’t anchored to an electoral process that they will try to destroy.

The thing is the Republican Party thinks this sheer level of incompetence is good. It’s something to be aspired to. The end goal of a decades long project. They think democrats are bad *because* they are competent enough to not accidentally fire the guys keeping the nukes safe.

@zeets.bsky.social saw this elsewhere. Want to acknowledge its truths and want to bring it to the forefront:

My theory: it’s an attack on inconvenient facts. Any information that doesn’t directly come from dear leader is a potential threat to dear leader because it’s beyond the leader’s control, so if the goal is to rule, go after any threats to your rule. That includes medical research. 1/

Alternatives to calling someone or something "crazy" when they're doing fascism. instead of "crazy" → fascist instead of "lunatic" → fascist instead of "schizo" → fascist instead of "psycho" → fascist instead of "bipolar" → fascist instead of "schizo" → fascist instead of "insane" → fascist

They’re calling it Trumpflation, folks

Copy/paste this onto every intersection

I’ve always said this was a big key to Trump’s appeal: What perversely excites a lot of people is that he represents liberation from the tyranny of basic decency.
