Well the other issue here is you are comparing a typical minimum wage job (Kmart) to factory work, which has always (justifiably) paid more bc the work is harder physically & often more hazardous. Those are terribly low factory wages for that time.
comment in response to

Yes it was low. Min wage was 4.25, so it was only 90 c above min wage, for a responsible clerical job. To compare, a full decade earlier I made $5/hr while a college student, working part time as a meat wrapper at a supermarket in a small town. Minimum wage was 3.35 then, so I was 1.65 above min.

The Republicans in Congress are not scared of Vance the way they are of Trump. A handful of them might find their spines and start doing their job.

My d works for WHOI. Just moved there last year after completing her master’s. She loves living where there are so many young people who love the ocean as much as she does. The town is full of young people who are the future of marine science.

No that won’t do it. That didn’t matter to them when Covid hit. Why would it matter to them this time?

I’m told by a family member that at his agency, they can still purchase supplies but have to go thru a third-party purchasing company to do so…at a 15 percent markup over what they’d pay if they could buy directly.

Vance was only there to try to regain relevance after being overshadowed by Musk for weeks.

So the question is will those small town sirens go off during tornado warnings this year, as Trump and Elon decimate the National Weather Service ?

It also shows a real ignorance of the kind of work federal employees often do. Oftentimes the work is so complex that you spend one week (& more) doing one thing. Not everyone is a simpleton like Musk, who appears to spend his days flitting from one small task to another.

Went back and added up my Target card charges last year. Over $1600. 2023 was closer to $2000. But not anymore. I can’t even stomach the thought of returning there, & since there are plenty of other options available to me that don’t turn my stomach, why would I go back there?

I am decidedly not a scientist, but even I learned about and remember the many intersex variations covered in the genetics elective course I took in college over 40 years ago. This is pretty basic stuff.

The vagueness problem can’t be fixed unless they say what they really mean, which is that they want to end any grant that pays anyone other than cis white straight able-bodied men, & any science that studies anything involving any group other than those men. Of course they know they can’t say that.

NBC, do better. Provide some context. Either explain why he was detained, or state that no reason was given for his detention. Tell your readers that waving a Palestinian or Sudanese flag are not illegal and are protected by the First Amendment in almost all circumstances. Don’t normalize this!

An excuse to take away NSF $ from anyone who isn’t a straight white male. The NSF GRF app actually prompts applicants to talk about adversities they’ve faced & how they’ll bring diversity to their field. A real “gotcha” if the qualities that helped them get the $ will now be the reason it’s pulled

Many Christian denominations teach their followers NOT to think for themselves.
Also, churches have been telling people how to vote for a long time (yes, I know that violates IRS rules for nonprofits, but they do it anyway).

OPM also has PII for spouses of retirees who have survivor benefits under the retirees’ pension plan, including judicial branch retirees like me
comment in response to

Don’t know if current judic emplees are getting the emails, but OPM definitely has their PII. OPM administers their health insur program (FEHB), pension program, FSA, etc. And as a fed judiciary retiree, OPM definitely has my pii, as they administer my pension benefits & FEHB

“Productivity” meaning “making $.” Doesn’t even occur to him that someone might work for a higher purpose. Saving the environment, making sure seniors get their soc sec chks on time, or the 1000s of other things fed emplees do are all far more productive than running a failing car co or app
comment in response to

Every federal judge is a federal employee whose PPI i believe is held by OPM (I know that other judicial employees‘ PPI is with OPM; not 100% sure whether the judges’ info is handled the same). I would think they’d have quite a lot to say about this breach
comment in response to

Will the Administrative Office of the US Courts or those of Congress respond somehow to this massive data breach of their emplees’ data? Trump/Elon don’t own them and can’t fire the career employees that run those offices. Several functions of HR for those emplees reside at OPM eg FEHB, pension
comment in response to

So it’s a tiny thing in the grand scheme of things but amidst the ongoing coup at OPM I think all current former and retired federal employees should put a freeze on their credit reports with all 3 credit reporting agencies since the coup has compromised our personal info🙄

Fellow retiree here. He’s at OPM where all our personal info is so he’s got access to that. The Federal pension trust funds are managed by OPM so yeah he’s got the money too. Oh and FEHB is there as well so he’s got our health insurance funds.

@aoc.bsky.social you’re one of the few members of Congress I trust right now please go knock some heads around. Current and retired federal employees need Congress to go scorched Earth on this brazen attack on them
comment in response to

They thought fed employees would jump at a so-called buyout offer because money. What they didn’t understand is that if those people were motivated by money alone they wouldn’t be working for the govt to begin with. Fed employees are there bc they believe in the mission, in serving a higher purpose.

And tbc, cuffing and shackling aren’t the same. Cuffing=wrist restraints. Shackling=ankle restraints. Shackling is typically reserved for the worst of the worst. That’s what’s shocking here: using the most extreme form of restraint on everyone, regardless of whether they have a crim/violent bkgrd
comment in response to
post
No I agree that cuffing that individual would be appropriate. But he’s an outlier. Most removable aliens don’t have any criminal record at all, much less 17 convictions.
comment in response to
post
1) yes, some undoc’d immigrants have crim records. Not all. Not even most.
2) yes, in this country we treat even convicted crims w/dignity. See the 8th Am, eg. So of course we treat indiv w/o crim records w/dignity. Why is this hard for you? Are you American? Cuz you sound like you’re from Russia
comment in response to
post
For perspective, in all the yrs I worked in the crim. court system (decades) I can count on one hand the # of prisoners who were shackled for ct appearances. Even most murderers aren’t treated that harshly. So your demand that all immigr detainees be shackled during air transit is quite extreme
comment in response to
post
What’s clear here is that you believe that even people with no criminal history, no history of violence, & no chance of escape deserve to be cuffed and shackled. Just say that. But don’t call yourself an American. That’s not who we are. That’s some totalitarian sh*t. Just admit that’s what you want.
comment in response to
post
The fact that you think this proves something tells me you don’t understand the basics of the immigr syst. Of course they all have final deportation orders. We can’t remove anyone w/o one. But most folks w/removal orders have no criminal or violent history - they’re just here w/o permission.
comment in response to
post
And for what it’s worth, our founding principles dictate that we treat all humans with dignity and respect, *even* the worst violent criminals. Please read the Bill of Rights. Anyone arguing that our govt should not treat people w/dignity & respect is unAmerican
