Several reasons. Gums receding past the line of the enamel (the hard outside stuff) so the porous dentin (inside stuff) is exposed to the mouth, cracks in the tooth, leaking/failed fillings, and the biggy - cavities.
If you are having this problem, it's best to see a dentist.

Vertical maxillary excess, or VME. It can be improved through surgical orthodontics. From that photo, it looks like he has a short upper lip and some other things that exacerbate VME.

Dragon Age: Veilguard has a god mode setting. I am so happy! I struggle with combat, so this lets me enjoy the parts of the game I enjoy which is the story.
