Especially well-explored concepts I try to avoid, but I have no qualms targetting a specific piece for the purpose of copying it cuz I approach it knowing I want to learn from it.
I'm really too pre-occupied about trying to get better that being original doesn't really cross my mind much.

Diabolical. I always knew it was a valid technique, CPUs used to do that to me. (Heck, still do.) But I never intentionally put it to practise myself.

Take pics under sunlight if ever possible. Manual mode if available. Gave me the best luck, personally.
As for scanning, it always turns out more punchy than irl. Suppose it's because the art isn't being affected by irl lighting so the scanner gives a more "raw" result.
