"Evil businessman wearing a weaponized monocle" is like "OK, maybe you can get a story out of this but I don't know how long that's gonna last". OTOH, "THE CLASSIEST HIGHWAYMAN GHOST YOU EVER DID SEE" is like "yes, give me all of this dude I can get immediately"
comment in response to post
Nah, even in life as a highwayman Gentleman Jim was already way more stylish than that

Monocle tried his best, but couldn't help but be IMMEDIATELY out-swagged by Gentleman Jim Craddock (to be fair, though, it's not hard to be out-swagged by GG, now that's a guy with some real drip!)

Now, you'd think given that Hawkman's GA backstory was the "reincarnation" thing, that HE would be the one with the immortal caveman supervillain, but no he is not. At least he got Gentleman Ghost, because the other guys he had at that time, uh... no one's buying comics for THE MONOCLE these days.

It's also funny that both Grundy and Savage are Alan Scott baddies, Alan brought some real heavy-hitters to play

It makes sense as a Golden Age origin, a Silver Age origin, and as someone trying to do some gonzo shit in the late 90s and on, that's why it rocks

It's a testament to the ones who lasted that they have real juice. I mean, "murdered mobster dumped in a cursed swamp who turns into Zombie Hulk" and "caveman who got turned into an immortal evil genius by a meteor" are just A+++ comic book supervillain backstories

Yeah, he, uh, looked real different when he debuted

Have to give a special shout-out to the Grundy cover in particular, you take one look at THAT image and it's like, yeah, no wonder that character stuck around

Yyyyup, the franchise was already that silly from 20 minutes into the second one and yet people 'forgive' the one because nostalgia

Oh, quality was in the fucking toilet by that point. Han/Luke/Leia were basically at Dem Leadership levels of "we're way too old to do this but we can't hand it over to the young'uns...". IIRC the publisher literally said "60 is the new 40" about them - and they were OLDER than that by the end.

Yup. The big thing they were prepping for before the Disney sale was Star Wars Detours, which, if you want any confirmation that the franchise was considered a joke, it's right there. That THAT is what got off the ground and not the Ron Moore live-action show shows you where it was.
