I'd prefer to see a goal of making schools and settings ready for the children and inclusive of everyone's needs. I'm not convinced that the reformed early learning goals are a great measure tbh because they've become increasingly narrow in scope. #EYFS

Thank you for this! My 6 year old has started to ask 'Why can't I watch YouTube?', 'Why can't I play Roblox?' books like this will really support those discussions 👍

Movement! Incorporate movement as much as you can. If your lesson doesn't really allow for that one day, give those students as many 'jobs' as possible - handing out books, wiping the board, getting something from the office etc

Personally, there are family members no longer here as a result of the pandemic. Professionally, I made an active decision to move to Early Years, seeing the impact the lockdowns had on my son who was just 2 at the time.

I imagine you don't really get things left in a corner gathering dust, you are constantly checking and reviewing resources

Not just in the Early Years - a very important point 👍

My son has this microphone, he belts out 'Sweet Dreams' by Eurythmics at 7am on the weekends 🤣

This would be fantastic but I have never heard of it, it sounds very expensive! However, could this be something academy trusts could build into their structures, perhaps so these professionals become a shared resource between the group of schools?

Very well put!

A good governing body is made up of people from all walks of life, but I do feel that the SENCo has such a unique and misunderstood role, that it really helps to have someone who 'gets it' #EduSky #EduSkyPrimary #SEND

When I was a SENCo, my link governor was SENCo in another local school. I found it so empowering to have someone who understood the role and the context of the challenges I was facing, someone to challenge me and to celebrate my successes

I have a son in year 2 too. I definitely had a shift in perspective today realising my own son was learning times tables whilst I was investigating icy puddles and painting fallen leaves with no pressure to meet prescribed expectations 🤣

Yes, absolutely. Interestingly, this setting have developed a 5-12 provision for families electively home educating. For those going/returning to typical mainstream schools, it could be a huge transition. The challenge is finding a common ground I suppose!

I found it so interesting. I was there to discuss a child about to start. When observing him there and talking to the staff I realised that his 'needs' and 'barriers' didn't present in the environment, as it was so enabling and 'low-demand'.

Oh yes the feedback!! I've been teaching since 2010 and my first ofsted was about a year in...my feedback was that the lesson was great but could not be graded outstanding as the children didn't write down the learning objectives, it didn't matter that they knew the aims and achieved them!!!

Amazing collaborative conversations with other team members, planning how best to support some of the families we work with 🥰

Yes this is a very interesting point. I do feel that expectations of children with SEND are too low at times, I can see that if expectations are lower generally, this may have a further negative impact.

We also need to look at the expectations for academic learning for children at the end of the EYFS. They are overloaded in school, some thrive but many just can't.

Definitely, I think it is right for us to have expectations that most children by Reception will be toilet trained, able to feed themselves reasonably well and able to attend to an activity for a few minutes, but we need to be flexible for those that can't. This is what's missing.

Absolutely, I spend my days fighting for places for children in PVI settings and even stay and play groups. Health visiting support is almost non-existent in this area and children are falling through the cracks

In my previous school where I worked as SENCo, we implemented this scheme due to a huge lack of consistency in practice. I found it very boring, resource heavy and adult heavy. The results though, were positive for the children in mainstream classes, but it did not suit our C&L resource base at all

This looks really interesting. Let's hope those policymakers take note! Early Years really needs to be at the forefront of educational policy and development 🤞

I can't stand the term 'retrieval practice' for some reason 🤣

Unfortunately these settings appear to be getting rarer. I support transition from home to nursery/school as part of my role and often it feels like a huge unnecessary battle to get settings on board and make the adjustments needed, and to even have an 'inclusive' culture/attitude 😑

I had this role in my previous school. I was the SENCo, DSL and Behaviour Lead too, so found it very difficult to really focus on staff wellbeing and develop a robust strategy.
