I feel guilty about cancelling office hours and these motherfuckers are out there informing on their students to Trump's gestapo

if you find yourself reluctant to support the guy at Columbia because you find some of the politics he espoused distasteful or even abhorrent, you should know that this is exactly the reaction that they hoped for in choosing him as a target for unlawful detention based on political speech.

Be kind to a someone today. Everyone is walking around scared. Some are right on the edge and others push it to their unconscious but no one is immune. This plane has all the makings of hell but it can be the opposite when we connect with each other

There's a lot of frankly tedious debate about whether We're In Fascism Right Now. Whatever your view, I hope we can all agree that "government shock troops disappearing dissidents into their gulag network" is a pretty basic example of fascism. www.discourseblog.com/p/this-is-wh...

The United States government just disappeared a lawful US resident because it didn't like his speech. You should care about this because it shouldn't happen to anyone, but you should also care because it could happen to you. www.nytimes.com/2025/03/09/n...

i remember when ICE was formed. post-9/11 overreach stuff. it was illegitimate and authoritarian then and it has been every day since.

once again I have to invoke the specter of Ronald Wilson Reagan, who is in Hell now. under Reagan, the term "government spending" was effectively demonized. fuck you, Reaganite ghouls! spending money, on its people and their needs, is the function of government! public works are good! say so!

we told you every day that student protests are not a threat to academic freedom. we told you that the threat was from above, and that it endangers all of our rights in ways big and small. but some pundits and academic celebrities are simply paid too well to abandon their chosen path

UPDATE—Mahmoud's attorney says they do NOT know where he is. They were first told he was sent to an ICE facility in Elizabeth, NJ. But when his 8-month-pregnant wife tried to visit him, she was told he's not there. They've received reports he may be sent as far away as Louisiana.

Just FYI, Tom argued for universal welfare, abolition, public education, state-sponsored pre/post-natal care, family subsidies, & retirement for workers at 50 w/state pensions that would double at 60. He also considered the American revolution a failure, co-opted by self-serving, landowning elites.

If your favorite prog metal band is Dream Theater you have cop energy. Sorry I don’t know why but it’s true.

Detail that seems to get lost www.nytimes.com/2025/02/05/u...

We need to say explicitly that this is an antisemitic conspiracy theory. Elon is naming five Jewish people for a reason.

thinking about when siskel and ebert were dicking off and riffing in-between takes and decided to roast the shit out of the protestants

This brain-dead take is becoming the conventional wisdom on the struggles of young men but it's false. From homelessness to suicide prevention to opioid regulations to higher minimum wages, Democrats' platform and rhetoric are *far* better for men than anything coming from the right.

"If we throw minorities under the bus, Republicans will stop calling us too woke" is the same logic that got us Clinton's welfare cuts and Obama's immigration crackdowns. You can't policy your way out of a right-wing propaganda problem.

There's a lot of Dems who need to get primaried next year but this is a good list to start with.

A perfect combo of aggressive both-sidesism and AI fetishism

is it in his power to declare this? no. will universities use this as an excuse to further infringe on students' rights to protest? absolutely.

Haha this is terrifying! I've been thinking about how the idea of working in higher ed in a state like Louisiana makes me uneasy (esp. if I was at a public school), but it turns out there is no good state to be in higher ed right now.

Real people, real lives, real JOBS, real futures. Every day my heart breaks for so many students I don't know. We have to fight for their futures

🚨 if you work in the federal government and you’re taking to an attorney, presume your communications aren’t privileged. use personal email to communicate with your counsel. seriously.

This might be an old person opinion, but it is shocking how spoiled everyone is. Oh, a shot that is cheap to produce, has minimal side effects, and reduces your chance of disease by a full third isn’t good enough? What do you want here and how do you look to achieve it?

1. Nearly a century ago, Nazis burned trans books to usher in fascism. Now, Trump is doing the same, digitally burning all records of transgender people and striking the community from records. This must be seen for what it is: a move towards atrocity. Subscribe to support my journalism.

Mom, come pick me up, they're coming up with the silliest possible version of the Great Man Theory of History

A guy from FIRE was at the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools conf in December supposedly speaking about risks for campus speech in the incoming Trump admin, but I suspect doing heavy both-sidesing. I actively refused to give him my time but just seeing him there made me very angry.

The speed at which people forget what presidencies were like is just so bananas to me. Like it's one thing for people in 2016 to not quite remember how bad Bush was, but for people in 2024 to not remember what Trump's first term was like. Just. How? Four is not a lot of years.

Imagine what a commuter paradise Manhattan would be if millions gave up public transit for cars!

This is the “waste” Musk and his DOGE scumbags are cutting, housing for almost 100 Maine people is cancelled over night leaving kids and their families on the streets.

Evergreen reminder

Major news! A court in Montana has just declared SB458, a bill that "defines sex" in a way that ends the legal recognition of transgender people in Montana, as facially unconstitutional. This is the first time a bill defining sex has been ruled on! Huge win for trans people in MT!

Meanwhile, the official White House account is tweeting videos of undocumented immigrants being chained up and sent on deportation flights as "ASMR."

I'm sure this is important to talk about it and I will certainly go in and read to be more informed but we have to do away with the notion of "politicization of government," government is political. We need politicians whose politics are not "destroy government."

The era of Web3 we're in right now is incessant YouTube ads with names like "Use ChatGPT to get rich quick on crypto" so this seems like a great time to bet against these things if you actually have any money left.

The narrative in the last election was that despite being normal and expressing the views of the average voter, people saw Democrats as the annoying, extremely online caricature in their heads. And voted for Republicans they saw as normal despite expressing views of extremely online caricatures.

Sure, since you asked so nicely! 1. McConnell and the Senate GOP kept Judd Gregg from joining Obama’s Cabinet and blocked Tom Daschle — a powerful senator! — from being Obama’s HHS pick.
