I'm a big fan of dungeon crawl classic. The funnel is fun, but definitely over emphasized. There is also a Lankmar setting supplement that adds some more survivability rules for PCs.

We ran very combat heavy games with it. But combat skills are not a given, like they are in d20 systems. You have to build your character in that direction. Combat is also fast and brutal. There is no bucket of HP. Just levels of how hurt you get when you get hit.

Westend games star wars runs on the d6 system that is level-less. And figuring out encounters is super easy.
Gallant knight games is currently writing a d6 2e that will include setting modules if star wars isn't your thing.

You can switch out everything in the core rule books for any mechanic for variable outcomes, and 90% of what happens at the table would look the same.

Tehanu is a continuation of the main characters story from Tombs of Atuan. I'd suggest reading at least a wizard of Earthsea and tombs of Atuan before Tehanu.
