Libraries are humanities finest achievement, and the last place on earth you can get that old Blockbuster wanderlust browsing experience. Go pick up a movie or some manga or a book or use their 3D printers for a mini or check out a sewing machine kit, like, they have so much stuff at libraries now

BLOW OUT never loses its magic.

ANYWAY, did you know there's an extension you can put on Chrome that will connect with your local library system and when you go look at a book, say on AMZ, it will tell you if that book exists in the library system and if it's available? It's literally called Library Extension.

If you’re a fan of David Lynch, you should know the work of Maya Deren — one of the most influential women in experimental & independent film. She made films in the 1940s in her mid 20s that are incredible to this day. She was young and brilliant and extremely visionary (She was also a total baddie)

I'm worried that I'm starting to understand jazz

The ASL version of “Not Like Us” is magnificent.

STILL WAITING

oh i very much need to see this

I'm starting Rod Serling's NIGHT GALLERY - the spiritual successor to THE TWILIGHT ZONE from the '70s that focuses a bit more on the spooky and supernatural. I haven't seen very many episodes and I have a brand new DVD box set with all 98 episodes, so maybe I'll make a thread.

Reminder: if you're in the U.S. & have a library card, you can create a FREE acct on Kanopy & watch a zillion awesome movies, incl many on Shudder/other $ platforms. The Nest, Sleepaway Camp, The Church, Talk To Me, Oldboy, Blair Witch, Possession, Lost Hwy, Infinity Pool, Lake Michigan Monster...

With the torrent of anti-LGBTQ executive orders, there's going to be a torrent of litigation. Keeping track will be difficult. That's why the legialerts team will be working with bots.law to create a bot for LGBTQ litigation related to this admin's illegal actions. Stay tuned.

Suddenly, out of nowhere, a declassified World War II-era CIA guide to sabotaging fascism in the workplace has become one of the most popular free ebooks on the internet: www.404media.co/declassified...

i don't know who here needs to hear it but it's important that everyone know there is a Roku channel that shows nonstop Dick Van Dyke Show episodes 24/7 for when you need a break from screaming internally and externally

This comments section is the first time I've felt even a shred of hope in eight days.

AOC spot on , this is what leadership looks like.

Why is anyone surprised by a republican Senator saying "yeah, he broke the law I wrote, that's fine with me"?

“What were you thinking during that last lap?” “Well…my in…stincts…uh…my instincts just…kind of… You see him, right?” “See who?”

"All these new apartment buildings... Yet so many people forced to sleep outside.." Seen in Bellingham Washington

I miss the era of ludicrous, impossible to shelve, physical media. It felt lawless.

Weirdly underrated scene from Twin Peaks: The Return. One of my favorite Roadhouse performances (Flashing lights warning)

We’re watching Twin Peaks in the evenings, and I busted out my Blu rays rather than relying on streaming, and one thing I HIGHLY recommend, especially if you aren’t familiar with them (I hadn’t been) are the “log lady intros” for the original series episodes on syndication. Just lovely moody stuff.

AOC: "I want folks at home to look at what members of Congress are invested in private prisons companies, and look at the votes on this bill. It is atrocious that people are lining their pockets with private prison profits in the name of a horrific tragedy."

I really hope everyone understands what is going on with Elon and Wikipedia. Wikipedia is one of our last remaining bastions of evidence-based consensus reality. The MAGA narrative is fundamentally threatened by evidence-based fact, and Wikipedia is a repository of evidence-based fact.

SHARE WIDELY. KNOW YOUR RIGHTS. With mass deportations starting today across the country, it is vitally important - for both citizens and non-citizens - to know your rights. You have the right to remain silent. Assert it. You have the right to a lawyer. Ask for one. (1/3)

Birthright citizenship is on the lips and minds of many, given yesterday’s “executive order.” Recommend Martha Jones’s book to those seeking to inform themselves about the context of this concept.

Musk comes from a family that moved to South Africa *for* the racism. He has repeatedly endorsed Great Replacement Theory in the US & Neo-Nazis of the AfD in Germany. He championed the rights of white nationalists and restored Nazi accounts to Twitter. But I'm sure the Nazi salute was an accident.

One thing before tomorrow: Use your local libraries. Get your card. Borrow books, manga, films, audios, ebooks. Recommend titles for purchase (usually online). Attend promoted activities. Fill out those "How are we doing?" questionnaires. Tell your kids that libraries are good. They are. 📚

Trans rights forever the end.

I sent in my recent piece to the magazine and the editor sent it back with notes, and the note for the first paragraph was: "This is a perfect paragraph". Which is some subtle Jedi editing stuff, because now the rest looks shit to me and I'm 3 days in to trying to fix it.

Martin Scorsese reflects on the loss of David Lynch:

From his book Room To Dream, David Lynch on the joy of failure.

Without Mel Brooks hiring Lynch to make THE ELEPHANT MAN — on the strength of ERASERHEAD alone — he is very likely just a guy who made a weird film at AFI. That whole filmography you love doesn’t happen. We all need sponsors and mentors and patrons. We need people who believe in us.

Love the Mel Brooks/David Lynch friendship so much

This is a beautiful tribute.

‘I always say, the film is the thing. The film is the thing. It’s the film, the language of cinema. You work so hard & the second it’s finished, people want you to change it back into words.’ - David Lynch

“There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.” ― Hunter S. Thompson, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

Remember, we lived at a time when the greatest episode of television ever made was released.

I reference Lynch and his works - either internally, externally, in writing or in thought - pretty much every day of my life and have since I first saw BLUE VELVET at a ripe young age. It’s not an interesting story but I probably owe him, in some capacity, everything.

How rare it is to find an artist willing to allow mystery to stand, to allow the surreal to remain surreal, to show the violent puzzle of existence next to the beauty without trying to organize them into something easily understood or comforting. This is a great loss.
