If I had a band or a label, I would do a punk cover of "No More Kings" from Schoolhouse Rock. And then I would gather a bunch of people to write a whole album of next-generation Schoolhouse Rock songs, with songs about Social Security and Medicaid and NOAA. I am not kidding in the least.

"The only people [the CFPB]'s bad for is big businesses that want to mistreat consumers" SAY IT LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK (and also your elected officials)

The DOGE website claims that hundreds employees have been working at CFPB for 20+ years, and some for as long as 35 years. Impossible: CFPB launched less than 15 years ago. doge.gov/workforce?or...

When I heard Musk say this on Tuesday, my assumption was that it was a programming issue. Because I can code and have written to databases and because I am familiar with other examples of default values being misinterpreted. Yet somehow Musk isn't.

The CFPB has returned $21 billion to 205 million consumers who were scammed at the hands of predatory banks. You can root out waste, fraud, and abuse... or you can eliminate the CFPB. But you can't do both.

💟 ❤️‍🔥 SHARE YOUR STORIES 💟 ❤️‍🔥 CFPB workers are ready to get back to work saving $$$$ for everyday Americans! Tell us in the comments how the CFPB has helped you. #CFPB4uandme #saveCFPB

Regulation versus innovation is a false choice set. That’s the post. [And I am repeating it every 4 hours all day] ♾️♾️♾️♾️

For all my fellow librarians, data admins, and other university staff types, I spent today's laser cutter time playing with different materials and a message in the spirit of #LoveDataWeek. We're indirect costs. If the government cuts those rates, there goes our funding. #DHmakes

Handing out the CFPB budget to American taxpayers: $711,586,678/341,000,000 Americans = $2.09 per consumer Money CFPB has earned for American taxpayers: $21,000,000,000/341,000,000 Americans = 61.58 dollars/consumer #deleteDOGE #saveCFPB

I think he might be our very best poster?

With the reports of new Administration officials accessing sensitive data systems, I call upon Congress and the White House to take all necessary actions to forbid access to the data collected by the federal statistical agencies by individuals outside those agencies. www.linkedin.com/feed/update/...

“5 6 7 8 Dodd Frank is pretty great!” (in video) Has to be perfect rallying crying to remind that (1) agencies are created by acts of Congress (2) generally to prevent the repeat of specific, tangible crises (eg GFC) In case anyone needs to be reminded..

i wonder why these guys hate the CFPB so much ohh

I have a confession . . . I was an “overhead cost”. I was a beaker washer, agar plate pourer, research secretary. I was paid by “overhead cost” fees. Loved it. Those “overhead cost” jobs allowed this rural kid to become a physician. Please tag how #OverheadCostJob impact u.

UW-Madison estimates every $1 in revenue has +$26 ROI in economic impact, so defunding universities will wreak havoc on local, state, and national economies. Many tens of thousands will lose their jobs in US. Thousands of startups stopped. State tax revenues lost. budget.wisc.edu/budget-in-br...

I’ve been seething and grieving since yesterday’s Friday Night Massacre of NIH overheads, a seeming bit of bureaucratic trivial that will in fact destroy the US university system if unchecked. But I want to get away from budgets and rate breakdowns and F&A percentages for a moment. Humor me?

BEAUTIFUL TURNOUT FOR THE RALLY TODAY!!!! Organized in one day by our incredible CFPB Union members, that's how fired up we are to #DeleteDOGE Thank you to all who showed up in #solidarity with CFPB workers and ALL working Americans who we serve! #NTEUisWatching

"The budget for 2025 for CFPB is $823 million. Since its creation in 2011, the CFPB has returned $20.7 billion to consumers." www.npr.org/2025/02/08/n...

“A potential breach could also have serious ramifications for banks and other CFPB-supervised institutions that incur significant costs to both safeguard their customers’ PII and meet their obligations under HMDA and other consumer financial laws.” - @nteu335.bsky.social

For anyone backing up public data of interest, here are a few short examples of diff tools like scrapping, fetching, browser automation, and OCR (Some may not run as they reference 2022 websites) www.emilyriederer.com/post/states-...

I made this graph just now—sitting in my kitchen, drinking coffee—with free software and a subset of the four million data points provided for EVERY DAY since late 1981 publicly and without restriction by NOAA just on this measure alone. Now I wonder how much longer it will be possible to do this.

For friends who are in the federal government, this is a very good guide on why you should be using Signal. In short, it’s safe and it’s free! a.wholelottanothing.org/a-guide-to-u...

Attention #publicpolicy and #data nerds: 🔍 Policy Analysis Lab is seeking guest contributors to share evidence-based insights on real-world policy analysis. (*cough* #rstats and #python peeps *cough*)

Dear journalists: Now, more than ever, ✨The lawyers need to see the actual court filings.✨ Yes, I know you summarized. Yes, I know your non-attorney readers don't care. But we need to see the documents. The actual documents. If you're pulling docs from PACER, use RECAP & give us a link. Please.

The entire archive of CDC datasets can be found here. HUGE shoutout to data archivists- this work is important 👏🙌🏻 archive.org/details/2025...

I just posted a new notebook: Causal Inference with the 𝚖𝚊𝚛𝚐𝚒𝚗𝚊𝚕𝚎𝚏𝚏𝚎𝚌𝚝𝚜 📦 for #Rstats. It introduces the idea of G-Computation and tries to demystify the differences between ATE, ATT, and ATU. This is a first draft and I would looove any feedback! marginaleffects.com/chapters/gco...

I'm keeping a running list of disappearing federal data in the 🧵 below. If there are others I missed let me know. crampell[at]washpost[dot]com or Signal username crampell.13

Hey if anyone is considering backing up any datasets for some reason today, the Open Science Framework has free storage up to 5G/private repository, and up to 50G/public repository. (The OSF is run by a 501c3 (Center for Open Science), so if you do this you might also consider making a donation.)

If you're a journalist downloading CDC data today, please consider filling out this form so we have a centralized guide to who has what. docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...

NSF has received an email from its director to ignore the federal judge’s stay of Trump’s order and implement the spending pause. Note that the director does not take the limited interpretation the admin pushed publicly but instead takes the broad interpretation the admin pushed privately.

I was tagged the other day by someone kindly sharing my Python Rgonomics post and realized that my thesis of "tooling keeps improving" held up too well and some of the recos have changed Hence, here's the 2025 update: www.emilyriederer.com/post/py-rgo-... Now feat uv (vs pyenv, pdm) and Positron

Today’s one for the history books: Mastodon is becoming an independent non-profit, and Bluesky is supporting #FreeOurFeeds taking their AT Protocol in the same direction.

One of the coolest things about the announcement about @freeourfeeds.com, which aims to build a network based on ATprotocol that is wholly independent of Bluesky, is *how excited all the Bluesky folks are about this*. This is what they were building for from the start.

So many questions on this incoherent X AI sliding into my DMs It thinks I’ll DM 1k random people one at a time? Am I supposed to say “hi data scientist! My vibes say you have no data strategy so lemme tell you how to do your job” Is it likewise putting my name on random lists? Bizarre
