You wake up the day after the election. The frequentist party swept after the Bayesian incumbents got too aggressive setting informative priors. You sigh and resign yourself to four more years of NHSTs answering questions no one ever asked Not the politics we deserve but the politics we want

I was thinking about this Joe and Tracy anecdote from the supply chain crisis on gummy bears. Things are probably going to get really weird in a few weeks in unexpected ways:

After a physical therapist explained to me that running shoes need rest days (actually no joke), my brain started randomly anthropomorphizing everything (does my mouse need a rest day? My IDE?) But then I stopped because… well that’s silly and computers don’t have feeling

Real quick as I'm losing steam: dismantling CFPB puts consumers in a *worse* position than they were in 2008. The consumer protection laws were still being enforced by the Fed and other agencies, just not particularly well. Now the signal is they won't be enforced at all.

Inspired by @emilyriederer.bsky.social, I made some pictures for my seminar on causal inference. They are not labeled. Let's see if you can name that research design.

Sick of being taken advantage of by OTHER PACKAGES?! Use python package {tariff} to show those packages WHO IS BOSS. Make Reinventing The Wheel Great Again! pypi.org/project/tari...

You thought a tariff policy promulgated by the "time series forecasting with a cubic polynomial" guy **wouldn't** have some twists and turns? COVID-era throwback: www.vox.com/2020/5/8/212...

Looks like 23andMe might be on the verge of shutting down. If you or a family member have used their services, now’s a good time to download and remove your data from their servers before it gets sold off. oag.ca.gov/news/press-r...

Thanks to @newbooksnetwork.bsky.social , I discover a lot of niche books that my library doesn’t have. But I could always read them thanks to inter library loan funded largely by IMLS apnews.com/article/inst... #ThankYouCivilService

We are thrilled to announce Pointblank for data validation in Python! With Pointblank, you can check your data against expectations and constraints, get a beautiful report table, and examine detailed step results and metrics. Learn more in the blog post: posit.co/blog/introdu... #Python

Please get in touch if you are up for chatting with recent U.S. fed employees about career paths!

After interviewing @meredithmeredith.bsky.social at SXSW, I have come to the conclusion that the only way to protect your data is to not let it be collected…

You know what would make the market chaos materially worse? Bank runs! Thanks to OCC regulating bank reserves and FDIC insuring accounts, we aren’t rushing to the nearest branch and creating an even worse credit crunch #ThankYouCivilService

Even Bezos thinks we need the CFPB: "the CFPB works to prevent another economic crash. Removing its guardrails only invites further calamity." #defendCFPB wapo.st/3FeBuZf (gift link thx to UCI libraries)

Tech Dirt is what it looks like when you’re actually concerned with intellectual freedom and don’t let that issue get confused with various culture-war clickbait substitutes.

We need to organize--let’s help each other. NIH is cancelling grants, but it's not clear exactly what they're cancelling and why. Without this information, we can't respond. I've started a Google Sheet to track grant cancellations. Please add any canceled grants you know of and spread the word!

The public really needs to understand this. Every university system in the world rests on public funding, there has never been an alternative model at any time in history. We have universities for literally the same reason that we have roads and armies.

You know how some of your clocks will just *know* how to adjust to the time change tonight (and not just our phones talking to cell towers)? They get that from govt radio. Thank you, NIST, for maintaining the time! www.nist.gov/pml/time-and... #ThankYouCivilService

Mandatory high school civics class that isn’t just like “how a bill becomes law” or whatever but also “how NOAA powers your phone’s weather app” and “NIH helped make your asthma inhaler”

Flying this morning. Thanks to NHTSA for safe roads to airport, TSA and FAA for flight safety, NTSB for investigating past crashes and making new protocols, NOAA and NWS for forecasts that made route planning possible, etc etc #ThankYouCivilService

If I had a band or a label, I would do a punk cover of "No More Kings" from Schoolhouse Rock. And then I would gather a bunch of people to write a whole album of next-generation Schoolhouse Rock songs, with songs about Social Security and Medicaid and NOAA. I am not kidding in the least.

"The only people [the CFPB]'s bad for is big businesses that want to mistreat consumers" SAY IT LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK (and also your elected officials)

The DOGE website claims that hundreds employees have been working at CFPB for 20+ years, and some for as long as 35 years. Impossible: CFPB launched less than 15 years ago. doge.gov/workforce?or...

When I heard Musk say this on Tuesday, my assumption was that it was a programming issue. Because I can code and have written to databases and because I am familiar with other examples of default values being misinterpreted. Yet somehow Musk isn't.

The CFPB has returned $21 billion to 205 million consumers who were scammed at the hands of predatory banks. You can root out waste, fraud, and abuse... or you can eliminate the CFPB. But you can't do both.
