“We will fight it every step of the way, legally, politically, and our members will be out in the street pushing back. There’s no way we will let them undermine higher education in this country.” - Todd Wolfson, AAUP President www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

what would you do differently if you were trying to legalize discrimination?

The American Medical Association did a study showing encampment sweeps that forcibly relocate people lead to big increases in: overdose deaths, hospitalizations, life-threatening infections, and more. And yesterday, a man was run over with a bulldozer in an Atlanta sweep.

Today's the day! I poured everything I've got into this book, and now, eight years after I started working on it, it is officially published! I'm so grateful for everyone who helped make this book a reality - and to all of my readers for their support.

Headed to the office to print syllabi and check back in on the aftermath of this little situation, wish me luck

For any scholar working on the 19th-c. press, a Curran Fellowship can be a big help. Everybody is eligible, and the application is blessedly straightforward. This year's deadline is next week: Wednesday, January 15. Recommendation letters due Jan 22. rs4vp.org/awards/curra... #19th-c

Did this one fall down the memory hole?

Amazon has denied a leave of absence to an Alabama woman who was struck by the New Orleans attacker’s truck and shot in the foot during the attack. She worried she won’t have a job to return to when she recovers. www.nola.com/news/crime_p...

USC so anti union it is trying to misclassify 85% of all faculty, ALL of whom are lecturers, as "managerial employees and/ or supervisors." It also argues that "the @nlrbgov.bsky.social structure is unconstitutional."

Donald Trump’s threat to take back the Panama Canal typifies the arrogance that has characterized US dealings with Panama since the 1850s. But, as I write in @nytimes.com Trump misses the real problem: climate change makes the Canal’s long term future uncertain. www.nytimes.com/2025/01/01/o...

Thousands of documents obtained from the Yale Police Department show how the campus police closely surveilled pro-Palestine protestors, in collaboration with the FBI and counterterrorism forces. What other campuses followed this playbook?

The way that university officials have begun to treat “peaceful” and “disruptive” as antonyms, when they in fact are not antonyms, is the kind of violence to language that one expects of authoritarians

Debt Collective members, mostly in their 60s and 70s, are begging Biden and the Secretary of Education to cancel their student loans before it's too late. These folks have more than paid off the original principal, but they remain stuck in a debt trap. Listen to some of their stories here 👇🏽

I talked to Hell Gate about things that are going on over here at NYU. Check it out.

I will take this moment to pick on a tiny anonymous account because they picked the fight and the issue is life or death. Telling workers that a strike is pointless is an anti-worker position that grants godlike powers to Trump and no power to regular people in the place where they have the most.

Last week, several of us were designated "Persona Non Grata" on campus and banned from several buildings including the library At present, NYU has not communicated any aspects of a process including: 1. The specific violation 2. How to appeal this designation 3. How long the ban will last

We are now on BlueSky! The 2025 Conference of the Society for Novel Studies will be held at Duke in late May. Check out our website to find more about this year's theme. Program will be live shortly sites.duke.edu/sns2025/cfps...

Columbia University staff are being suspended and terminated for participating in last Spring's Gaza Solidarity Encampment, even if they were off the clock at the time. Similar cases are being seen across the country. https://mondoweiss.net/2024/12/universities-are-continuing-to-retaliate-against-…

Submit an abstract to this special issue on "infrastructural poetics" and then form a panel for the 2025 MSA conference, which shares the theme of infrastructure! Link for the conference CFP in bio or see pinned post.

Andrew Ross, and Sonya Postmentier were arrested along with several non nyu community members. About 20-30 students and several other faculty were designated PNG.

Several faculty and students were given this designation with no explanation of why other than “violation of university policy.” In my case, the violation could only have been filming interactions between campus cops, administrators and students during a peaceful sit in. This is where we are.

Snapdragons are my favorite flower to grow. They do however produce seed pods that look like the screaming skulls of the damned.

"We can’t allow people to become complacent about repression or attacks on speech. We need to get our message about the value of higher education out. We need everyone — engineers, physicists, sociologists, poets — to talk about why higher education matters." truthout.org/articles/aca...

The growing alignment between Higher Education Labor United, Scholars for a New Deal in Higher Education, and @aaup.bsky.social is the most positive development in higher ed that I've seen in my career. Happy to be playing my small role to advance it!
