“We're starting to see some recurring patterns where really, really dry conditions…combined with really strong winds, allows a fire to grow really aggressively and just exceed what we're able to deal with.” - Mathieu Bourbonnais, assistant professor at UBC Okanagan www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

It’s official—2024 was by far the most expensive year on record for insured losses in Canada due extreme weather fuelled by climate change. Losses totalled more than $8.5 billion last year, far above the previous record of $6.2 billion in 2016. www.ibc.ca/news-insight...

Climate change is making wildfires, floods and droughts more frequent and severe—which now costs people and governments billions of dollars a year. See how the costs of these events are piling up on our interactive tool. climateinstitute.ca/map-climate-...

Truth matters. But when debunking climate misinformation, we have to understand that science denial is just an excuse for solution aversion. If we don’t want to fix it, any excuse will do: it’s not real! not us! not serious! That’s why talking solutions is so important. #AMS25

Supporting our American friends and neighbours in a time of need. Thinking of everyone affected by the California wildfires.

Occasional reminder that there’s no, “it’s too late, its over” for anthropogenic climate change. Every molecule of CO2 that doesn’t go into the atmosphere makes a difference. Preventing 0.1 degree of warming makes a difference. Every bit of climate resilience we build together makes a difference.

Trudeau unleashed.

Attached table from ECCC provides some detailed stats for November. Above normal everywhere, but a record warm month for NE NB. PEI was the wettest; Halifax & Yarmouth driest. Snowfall isn't on this table, but it was well below normal.

This is a great piece to read if you're feeling somewhat despairing & defeated (thank you @petermacleod.bsky.social)! www.nytimes.com/2024/11/29/o...

I was feeling really down today about climate, Trump, the state of Canadian politics ... but finding & hearing from so many awesome people on @bsky.app who are continuing to fight the good fight really cheered me up. Thank you. 🙏 Let's just continue supporting each other and keep on keeping on! 🤛💪

Despite the weekend rainfall, water levels remain low and Halifax water customers on the Lake Major supply are being asked to continue conserving water. #nswx

Emissions from the world's largest fossil fuel project - the Canadian tarsands, are up to 6,300% higher than reported: https://buff.ly/497ucjB If we want a future, this is a project we need to stop. #ActOnClimate #climate #energy #renewables #cdnpoli #abpoli

Thanks to @CoCoRaHSCanada volunteers for the latest rainfall data from the Fri-Sat rainstorm. Many parts of the central Maritimes welcomed between 50 and 75mm. There remains a deficit over the west; but two more systems this coming week will help.

The majority of earth's scientists now believe we are headed for at least 2.5°C of warming. We're in a climate emergency. No time to wait. #ActOnClimate #climate #energy #renewables #go100re

Trudeau announces two-month partial GST holiday, $250 cheques for many Canadians: The measures, which include exemptions for some children’s items and prepared or packaged foods and beverages, will cost the federal treasury an estimated $6.28-billion

Surprising figure below. Health costs form wildfires in Canada exceed fire management expenditures and other losses. journals.plos.org/plosone/arti...

Bluesky now has over 20M people!! 🎉 We've been adding over a million users per day for the last few days. To celebrate, here are 20 fun facts about Bluesky:

Climate Change: It's real. It's us. It's serious - and already dangerous. But there are solutions. The science is clear: the faster we cut emissions, the less suffering we will cause, and the better off we'll all be.

Bluesky tip for newbies: Bluesky has no real algorithm. Likes here do nothing but show the poster that you enjoyed their content. That kindness is always going to be appreciated by creators, but if you want to help to boost something here, you have to repost it so others see it. 🙂

There come's a point when you can't compromise. Dad said during emergency when landing on his carrier the order was "pull down your flight suit bend over and kiss your ass goodbye" You can't bargain with "maybe" during brain surgery. You pass the bar or you don't. Attitude adjustment #COP29 #climate

The NOAA Global Climate report year-over-year temperature anomaly graph indicates. ...there is a zero chance we will not be the warmest year ever in recorded human history. Oh goodie folks. Buckle up #climate

I’m not on the asexuality spectrum. But as a queer, feminist researcher, I think we should all care about asexuality. Why? Because asexual perspectives can help us better understand sexuality—and gender, race, disability, family, love, etc. Here’s why:

Halifax has had below normal rainfall for every month since April. Conservation advice for Dartmouth: halifaxwater.ca/alert/lake-m... Elsewhere folks have dry wells. First half Nov very dry in W Maritimes (~60mm is normal). The outlook is for heavy rain in the east over the next 7 days.
