Honestly, one thing that seems to bind senior members of the Trump administration is their weird and somewhat disturbing relationship with women. Getting dumped when you were 19 and never getting over it should not influence US security policy. Just an opinion.

I listened to the latest @warontherocks.bsky.social podcast yesterday, on the “diplomatic” wrangling over Ukraine’s future: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/w... It made stark the many parallels between these developments & the negotiations to end the war in #Afghanistan. A 🧵 on those. 1/n

What’s next? U.S. EUCOM and U.S. STRATCOM?

Good chat on US extended deterrence & Europe, w/ @nktpnd.bsky.social, @pranayrvaddi.bsky.social & Vipin Narang (WOTR subscribers). Vipin argues worst case is US keeping nuc posture in Eur intact but essentially checking out, taking no interest in making it credible warontherocks.com/episode/thin...

Fast? He waited 3.5 months while pretending to voters that debt break reform was not really necessary. He missed not only the chance to get the reform done while 2/3 majority existed (despite myriad warnings) but also to prepare voters for the scale of investments in defense that will now be needed.

Not trying to alarm people but just noting that the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, among their other important functions, is also one of the small number of people explicitly designated for translating Presidential nuclear strike orders into reality. www.doctrine.af.mil/Portals/61/d...

If the Trump administration causes disarray in the U.S. military by firing vast numbers of general officers, Europe will also need to ask whether the United States will actually be able to come to the defense of Europe...

When I spent time in the UK over the last years, my impression was that trains across the channel were actually more reliable than those in Germany. Looks like I wasn‘t wrong...

In touching off another round of Mercator debate, Trump has also rendered the whole subject moot. Whether or not the Mercator projection implicitly fosters imperialist attitudes doesn’t really matter when the president is explicitly fostering them himself. foreignpolicy.com/2025/02/14/t...

Good analysis by @adamtooze.bsky.social of Vance's MSC speech: "If Europe wants to be able to dismiss the sophomoric antics of Vance et al in the way they should, they need to be able to provide for their own security." adamtooze.substack.com/p/chartbook-...

„Nuclear security is highly specialized, high-pressure work, but it's not particularly well paid, one employee told NPR. Given what's unfolded over the past 24 hours, ‚why would anybody want to take these jobs?‘ they asked.“

If you’re attending #MSC2025, give the @munsecconf.bsky.social / @prif.org Decisionmaker Scenario Exercise a look. It is entirely anonymous, will take no more than 6 minutes of your time and my colleagues even claim it’s fun! You will find the survey in the conference platform/app under “Survey.”

Brilliant to see @lydiawachs.bsky.social is now here. Do follow if you are interested in Security and Defence, including nuclear.

In a letter to President Reagan, Soviet General Secretary Breznev proposed a moratorium on the deployment of new intermediate-range nuclear forces in the USSR and Europe. The letter is dated March 6, 1981 – more than two years before the United States would deploy Pershing IIs in West Germany.

📌I was the managing editor at Stars and Stripes and can tell you that Pete Hegseth is the first SecDef I am aware of to be openly booed by military families on a military base. 📌This is the most significant pushback I have seen to this administration's racist, hostile initiatives.

It seems to me that those who thought that bureaucratic inertia and vested interests - especially in the National Security State - would obstruct the second Trump administration were wrong. www.reuters.com/world/us/cia...

Arguably the biggest national security breach in U.S. history. Private employees downloading personnel data on every federal employee and tax and social security data on every American onto private unsecured servers. Needless to say, completely illegal and subject to major prison sentences.

"A private citizen with zero Constitutional authority is effectively seizing control of critical government functions. The Constitution explicitly requires Senate confirmation for anyone wielding significant federal power" www.techdirt.com/2025/01/31/e...

I wonder if this supposed wartime military command center in Bejing is one of the “certain harder and large-area military targets” the U.S. Department of Defense had in mind when it decided to pursue the B61-13 nuclear bomb, which will have a similar yield to the B61-7, in autumn 2023...
