#birds #ukbirds Foulshaw Moss, at sunset, a different Merlin to the usual occupant perched on the favoured stump. The usual bird is male, this a female/juvenile type. After some minutes another Merlin arrived, they sparred. The light was now so dull that the winner's gender/age was not evident.

#ukbirds The Merlin at Foulshaw Moss I saw last Wednesday, again put on a good show this afternoon. Suddenly onto its stump, preening and then fast off before returning with prey that he ate. When the light finally failed, he was still just visible stumped, while three Water Rail squealed around me.

#ukbirds A five minute visit to Foulshaw Moss, as the sun set (overcast all day) was rewarded by a pair of roosting Peregrine Falcons, an albino Red Deer stag and, last but not least, a fly by of an adult male Merlin who perched on a favoured tree stump before flying off fast and low across the Moss

#ukbirds South Lakes: bewilderment of ducks, the overflights of three Marsh Harriers, 2 adult males, and 1 ?2cy or adult? female. A bravura swirl of birds, repeated at the intrusion of a quad bike. At sunset, 3000 + Starlings into the reeds, no murmuration, just in and a deafening chorus of calls.

An exciting South Lakes lunch time, counting duck when an adult female Marsh Harrier appeared. She stooped at once and then sat in shallow water in a reed margin, shifting slightly, for about 3 minutes before rising and flying into the reeds with a Mallard she had drowned with her weight. #ukbirds
