Like a bit of anime, 40k and gigs, old enough to think the 90's were a couple of years ago (he/him)

Think following a relatively straightforward rock album with the less rock-y Flash Gordon soundtrack and Hot Space didn't help them in the US, and I've read that the vid for I Want to Break Free was pretty controversial. Probably knocked them out of mainstream attention

I mean, GW had a punt back in the day, but calling them an idol group may be pushing it...

Special mention must be given to the second opening and end themes, which are prime examples of j-rock cheese youtu.be/W5NPQexueS0?...

The series got better around the midpoint with the last six episodes being a series of two-parters which gave the story more space to breathe. There's also a random extra episode with chibi versions of the characters getting into hijinks and doing songs

That was a bit of a mixed bag, proper old school shonen with shades of Yu Yu Hakusho and Inu-Yasha but no real over-arching story. The characters were decent if a bit archetypal and the monster designs were pretty good, but it was weirdly gory at times which made its target audience hard to pin down

Week 7 - Ushio and Tora
Think I may have seen an episode of this on VHS back in the day, and picked up the DVD on import so I can watch the rest. Never got round to it and can't remember the episode I saw, hopefully that's not a bad omen

Hmmm, I got 'laziness' which tracks tbh.
Not sure how that would work in game, assume I just stay in bed while everyone else goes on the quest

A final one: rules, points and rosters should be free online, full codex/army books should be collector's edition only (and made to order after) with a faction book covering just story and art released instead. These should stay on sale with a new volume each edition to progress the faction's story

Tbh i've only watched the episodic cut so far, wanted to leave a gap before watching the movie cut but it kind of got away from me. I'm interested to see what is changed, especially with the shortened runtime. So far this is the only Macross i've seen, although i have Do You Remember Love? queued

Finally the remaining loyalist primarchs should stay dead. They won't, but they should. Having Guilliman and the Lion come back as men out of time trying to reconcile the theocratic mess the imperium is in different ways is interesting, but the others don't really add anything beyond fanservice

Also, Warhammer of all types needs some of the fun and randomness back - Orks should have weapons like the splatta kannon that can be immensely powerful or utterly backfire, ordinance should have a risk of scattering etc. The randomness is where the stories and flavour comes from

Grey Knights should never have been a full army. They're supposed to be elite daemon hunters, deployed in small numbers for a specific purpose. Same deal with Custodes and, to a lesser extent, Deathwatch. Trying to make them balanced as an army for competitive play takes away a lot of their flavour

Also i have never seen a series with more random unexplained nudity - fighting a one-one duel? Off come the pants. Infiltrating an enemy stronghold? Surely you'd be much less conspicuous in the nud. Officiating a wedding? Who needs those heavy robes?

You can tell the 6 parts were made at different times, the style noticeably changes as the series progresses. For me parts 4 (bar the unnecessary SA scene) & 6 were the best, they had a bit of visual flair to them and decent stories. Part 3 was the weakest, with some really shoddy art and animation

That one was very 'of its time', that time being the late 80s/early 90's OVA era. At its best it was a stylish hard-boiled action drama but the rest of the time it was a schlocky and predictable mix of sex, violence and melodrama with delusions of grandeur. Was a little disappointed

Kind of wish the UK release had both versions on it, all the versions here have the new English dub and score, but not the old one. I had to buy the Japanese DVD to get the old dub!

Still both remain my favourite Ghibli scores and Laputa my favourite Ghibli film, proper comfort viewing and listening for me !

I'm still mixed on this, the new soundtrack is great but I prefer the simpler arrangement of the original. The new score adds music to scenes that didn't have it originally, which makes them feel different. May be due to me growing up with the original dub tho (was shown on UK TV in the early 90s)

Week 6 - Crying Freeman
Going back in time a bit with this one, remember seeing the old Manga Video VHS on the shelves back in the day but it was never one I picked up. It didn't get a UK DVD release so this is the US one from ADV Films, sadly missing the UK dub but I can't have it all I suppose

I did enjoy it overall though, just a shame there were only two episodes so many, many plot threads are left dangling. Visually pretty good too, just weird how the characters all look like they're from different shows

This one was a two episode OVA, the second one is much more action packed than the first but kind of rushes towards a bit of a nothing conclusion. There's a lot more story that's referred to but not fleshed out and there's no resolution. What's here is pretty tense though, it just feels a bit short

Didn't really know what to expect from this, but it's been interesting so far. Has a very retro anime vibe and takes some heavy inspiration from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, but its tone is a bit erratic, jumping from naval combat to hijinks with kids who look like press-ganged Pokemon trainers

Week 5 - Submarine 707R
I used to do anime reviews back in the day but as anime got more popular the number of releases just got too much for me to keep on top of, so a fair few slipped through the cracks. This is one I never got round to, so let's see what it's about

Couple of bits from my old Iron Warriors army, the chaos champion is missing its wings as they were from an oldhammer monster kit and were so heavy they kept falling off

The main issue with this release is that it's crying out for an English dub, although Nozomi did later crowdfund one I have the earlier sub only release. It is also actually the first half of the series, so it ends on a cliffhanger. Not sure if i can even see season 2 since the rights have lapsed ðŸ˜

I could easily see it as a BBC period drama, and though it hits a lot of the story beats you expect from this sort of thing it does it well. An example is Prince Hakim, a character that quickly develops from culture clash comic relief to a counterpoint to the rigid Victorian class structure

Emma was pretty decent, didn't exactly reinvent the wheel as British period dramas go but then it's not a British period drama - as an anime it's pretty unique. It's kind of refreshing to see an anime approach Victorian-era England straight, and the setting is authentic and meticulously researched

Week 4 - Emma: A Victorian Romance
Something a bit different this week, picked this up at a convention years ago out of curiosity but never got round to it. Hopefully should get through the 12 episode series in a week, got some far longer series queued up so this is a bit of a test

Good music though with a real mix of styles - reminiscent of Kenji Kawai at times - and it's interesting to see an anime set largely in Turkey even if it was only really showcased in the first 3rd of the film. Will be interesting to see the Netflix adaptation to see if it fleshes things out a bit

Will be really interested to listen to the commentary on that one, some interesting ideas and some truly stunning animation - especially during the action scenes - but it was a bit visually inconsistent (although that may be the DVD transfer) and the characters were a bit underdeveloped

Week 3 - Spriggan
Bit late this week, but time to check out another sci-fi anime, one I'm glad of the slipcase for cos that's a damn ugly cover!
Also I'd have watched it sooner if I'd realised it had an audio commentary from Jonathan Clements - a Clementary is always worth hearing!
