(Leaves it on the counter in the weird bakery)

"Do you wanna take one to Cole?" She slid her hand inside the bin and withdrew another cupcake, then lightly tossed it to Bellara and leaned back against the counter. "Hallie is my daughter. Weird, uh, time shenanigans made that happen; she came back in time to help me with something."

"Life around me is always interesting! Hallie hates it, she just wants to play her games." Cienn withdrew a small lemon poppyseed muffin from a bin and offered it to Bellara. "Want a snack?"

Cienn slid out a weight as well as a microscope. "I weigh them for their gold then calculate the value. I can't take social value without doing an independent study, and I can't trust other worlds to send unbiased independent sources to cite their own valuation, hence the card idea. It simplifies

She couldn't help but laugh. "Yeah, bottlecaps from soda cans. I was pretty startled when I found out, to be honest. And yeah, those are the dollars. I also take three different kinds of gold coins, which I think is a little nuts."

them in the trash, then leaned against the back table, briefly extending her awareness up front to see if there was a new customer. There wasn't, so she turned her focus back to Bellara. "It was very nice of you to volunteer to help me."

"Ohhh," with all the sheets now in the ovens, all they had to do was sit and wait while the torment of the smell of baking cookies infused the walls and filled every bit of air. "I've had my fair share of bad experiences with 'gods' so I got wary pretty fast." She took her gloves off and dumped

Cienn grunted when she heard 'gods'. "Do the gods of your world actually do godlike things? Do they save people or help people? Or do they just sit around doing whatever they feel like?"

"This is a demiplane with access gates to at least seven other worlds," Cienn gestured to the bakery, "so none of them are truly 'local'. Caps are the currency of the place I live, but I grew up with dollars," she indicated the bottle caps on the sign, then the dollar bills.

"Thanks for telling me upfront," she gave Bellara a grateful smile. "I'd always rather someone tells me up front if something is uncomfortable. It makes it easier for me in general. So a lot of the Fade is myth and legend, but you're finding out not all of that is true?"

“Uh, well, no,” she turned the currency sign around, which listed 9 different kinds of currencies. “I made a baker card though, so you can give me a certain amount of currency, then you can put it on the card and charge the card for goods. Make sense?”

Her brows furrowed while they finished the last sheet of cookies and she put it into the oven. “Why can't dwarves dream?”

"I love you," she whispered back with a reassuring smile, then moving to put her arm around his shoulders and lean her head on his shoulder. If he didn't like the contact, it'd be easy for him to indicate it.

Not as far as I know. If Francis were here, I'd ask him.

This might come as a surprise but there is actually a school of magic focused on *not* having a school of magic!

"Too sweet, or just right?" she asked, then looked at the ducets he'd given her and then at her gold exchange rate. Time to do some calculations. "...do you happen to take change in silver coins?"

She whipped out her phone and checked it, then grunted. “Thirteen hours from now.”

“Yeah, no, I get what you're saying, that's why I opened a bakery. I've dreamed of this place for a long time.” Cienn gave the bakery a wistful look before turning back to the cake. “But this was an order for a big guy called a Goliath named Benny. It's for his birthday and it's due tomorrow.”

“We can eat it, for sure,” she gestured to it, “can't sell it... But it's a damn good cake.” She suddenly had a fork in her hand and cut out a small piece that hadn't directly hit the floor and tasted it. Bittersweet, not in taste but by the situation, that it was the best cake she'd made and only

“No,” misery clear in the words even as she uttered them. “Bacteria on the floor means I can't sell it, and it would be more work to try and slop something together than it would be to make a new one...” Her shoulders hunched for a moment while she stared at the cake in dismay.

Oh it's money! She held her hands so he could slide the money into her palms, then smiled. “It's no problem. How did it taste? This batch I tried a different recipe and I'm trying to decide if it's too sugary or not.”

“When I dim the lights like I did, I can count things way fast. I think of shadow kind of like an ethereal touch, like, a blanket but I feel everything it touches when I want to. Sorry, I forget how distracting it is.” Her interest in this Fade was apparent as she gestured for Bellara to keep

“It's a bakery, yes, like the bread maker, but I make sweets. They're very sugary, would you like a sample of something?” The shadowlands? That was a real place? She knelt down and withdrew an eclair, then presented it on a small plate.

"Ah, well all like you anyway." Cienn pushed open the little door separating the front area from the cash zone and the short hallway that led back into the baking area, where the cake was still on the floor. It took up most of the area back there, and just looking at it made her sad. An exhausted

Her expression darkened and she let the smile slip for a disgruntled frown. "I was making a bigass cake. It was fucking huge, Eddie. It was as big as you. It was three tiers! It was the biggest cake I'd ever made, and then someone shot a gun, and I panicked, and I DROPPED IT!" Her hands slammed on

"Hey Eddie." Cienn waved, looking frankly frustrated and trying to hide it as best she could behind her Perfect Customer Service Smile. The anger wasn't directed at Eddie, but at whatever had caused the gunshot. "Do you want an energy drink, a sandwich, or something sweet? Or all three?"
