New supplement to the Highway Code...

I do love the slow pace & relative safety of 20mph zones

This is a fascinating little thread

Portuguese editorial cartoonist Zez Vaz reaches back to Tiananmen Square to call on American defiance.

Me: Hi, may I please see the wine list? Waiter: Ma'am, it's 8 AM. Me: Oh, sorry. Good morning, may I please see the wine list?

Google: average EV battery is 40kWh So one full charge would use the same power as 80 full charges on my cargo-bike. How extremely inefficient eh? Add the tyre, brake & road dust particulates How extremely polluting eh? ie, cars are often the worst choice for town/city use #2manycars

"These emissions are largely unregulated by legislation and the study found that these 'non-exhaust' pollution sources are now responsible for the majority of vehicle particulate matter emissions in the UK and parts of Europe, with brake dust the main contributor among them."

Every year, billions of vehicles worldwide shed an estimated 6 million tonnes of tire fragments. These tiny flakes of plastic, generated by normal driving, account for 28% of microplastics entering the environment globally.
Heavy vehicles eg SUVs/EVs especially. theconversation.com/car-tyres-sh...

This sort of stuff from MPs really does look corrupt. Via Private Eye:

‘Blue zones’ are areas of the world where people live a particularly long time. They have been studied to see what lifestyles may lead to a long and healthy life. However, new evidence suggests they are simply areas with higher levels of clerical errors and pension fraud.

It never fails to appall & horrifying me at how much anger and hate is directed at schemes to keep children safe on roads. The council removing measures without funded replacements is just endangering children even more. Which manifesto had "we'll let kids be killed" on it? road.cc/content/news...

Spotted: One Less Tesla sticker on a cargo bike. Appreciate the refinement of the message.

Government is crowing that they're spending the same amount as the national active travel allocation for all of England on just four road junction schemes for drivers. And the effects will be only temporary anyway. www.gov.uk/government/n...

Criminal . Help me fight them → petition.parliament.uk/petitions/70...

Reece McKinven reversed over an 83-year old great grandmother FOUR times, killing her. He had no licence, no insurance, Cannabis in his system and a history of driving offences. He received a 13 month sentence and a 2.5 year driving ban. The system is not working. www.bbc.com/news/article...

"After one year of the zone, nitrogen dioxide from traffic was lower, GP visits for respiratory illnesses were down by 25% and those for heart problems decreased by 24%."

Tories, Susan Hall, Howard Cox, Sunak, Andrew Ellison, Clarkson, The Times, The Telegraph, The Daily Mail, Nick Freeman. Have I missed anyone?

They're killing people. They're killing communities. They're killing the planet. So how are these gigantic tanks still allowed on our roads?

What an opportunity to create a commons open to all out of a space currently enclosed through dangerous design for exclusive use by car owners.

Struggling with the idea of a pedestrianised Soho and raising concerns about deliveries? The answer is timed deliveries For most of the time, Soho has become a place where a small group of individuals dump their private property in public spaces, negatively impacting Londoners & tourists.

Charing Cross Road, pedestrianised today. Glorious. Because whenever you take cars away, cities get better.

Nice to see @podstreetsahead.bsky.social over here and this is an incredibly thought-provoking episode and one which anyone working on a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) banning cycling because of "bad" behaviour needs to listen to.

Good 20mph stats - first full year: 10 fewer deaths 26% fewer crashes 28% lower casualties This represents a £58 Million saving to society in the first year alone - which more than pays for the £32m one-off cost of the signs! www.gov.wales/police-recor...

@labourlewis's Water Bill will have its first debate on 28th March. This is our unmissable chance to put public ownership of water back on the table. Ask your MP to be there and back the Bill: actionnetwork.org/letters/ask-...

The answer (in part) = “Dutch drivers pay far more tax if they have a heavier car. The idea is to penalise those vehicles which most contribute to causing the potholes to help pay for the roads.”

We are outside the EU, why can't we mandate speed limiters that kick in at 80mph. No one needs a car that can do more than that on public roads www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Looking forward to all those people who were VERY VERY concerned about pollution on LTN boundary roads taking on Heathrow now

@fentonstevens.bsky.social hi Mike, really enjoyed your iv with Danny Peacock on linktr.ee/mytcpod Next time you see Danny could you ask him if his "jumping out of the second floor window" at Ashmole School was a bet? as some of the gossip at the time had said.

Oslo has made its streets much safer for everyone. It took responsibility for the danger (rather than blaming individuals) and raised money for safety fixes by charging to drive in the city. These two things show that a city values life over motor industry profits. thecityfix.com/blog/how-osl...

So despite all the fuss and noise, new data shows that the ULEZ expansion hasn’t hurt high street spending - it’s just helped clean up London’s air 💚 www.centreforcities.org/blog/ulez-ex...
