I’ve wondered this in the me too-context as well. I don’t think it was a coincidence that so many of these guys were extremely rich and powerful and used to getting whatever they wanted. Like if many of those guys wouldn’t have been so successful, I bet most would not have become sexual predators.

I wonder how much is the internet rabbit hole and how much is being so wealthy you get everything you want and can filter out any reality that you disagree with or makes you uncomfortable? I’m not familiar enough with his career to know if he was already that wealthy in 2008.

She’s literally a swing voter from Michigan. She’s the kind of voter we need to be reaching out to and trying to persuade to support our side. Also, in terms of winning other votes, we should be talking about how we can help people in her situation, not laughing that the leopard ate her face…

During the GFC did you ever feel there was a real risk that American democracy would significantly erode or that the rule of law might largely disappear? I did not and that’s what feels different to me this time. Maybe I’m overreacting, but it feels like there’s a 10-25% that it could happen.

Agreed. Also, from a purely pragmatic perspective, the only way we are going to get out of this mess is to persuade several million of the 77 million Trump voters to turn against the administration. As much as I disagree with her vote, I have sympathy for her and take no glee in her suffering.

Don’t know anything about Montgomery. Asheville is great. Haven’t been post-storm, but a co-worker just went and had a good time. I thinks many of the trails are still impacted, although he said you could still definitely do outdoors stuff but you have to plan and figure out what is open.

Haha…instead of the common fear that AI goes rogue and tries to destroy humanity, what if it gets so smart that it intentionally self implodes for the good of humanity?

Yep. I’ve been thinking about that memo a lot lately too. Here’s a link to the actual memo: semianalysis.com/2023/05/04/g...

A real challenge. My guess is it was either some kind of insurance scam or they had a single buyer that was taking delivery of all the “hot” eggs.

Just googling quickly it sounds like in the US refrigeration is standard but it is not in other parts of the world. Either way, having unloaded a bunch of dairy trucks and having seen a bunch of spills, trying to distribute eggs in small quantities without losing a bunch to breakage would be…

Eggs would come in crates that were a dozen eggs three wide (36 eggs) and I believe like 5 stacks high (maybe it was four, maybe as high as 7–it was a while ago).

I used to work in a major grocery store in high school and college in the 90s. I would help stock the dairy section somewhat regularly. Eggs always came in a refrigerated truck, were stored in a refrigerated cooler and then were put in a refrigerated dairy aisle.

And don’t eggs have to be refrigerated? Like smuggling them and keeping them safe seems complicated and expensive. Or we’ll know who’s buying the black market eggs when people start getting sick.

Having now read the article, it sure seems they like group is still pro-Trump. They just needed to rebrand.

Substantively, are they now actually against Trump? Or are they still for Trump, but this new name allows them to have a better chance at persuading their audience to be sympathetic to Trump?

I wonder how many of those decision makers are kind of pot-committed right now. If you advocated for your organization to spend huge sums of money on AI infrastructure, it’s kind of hard to be like, whoops, that was a mistake…

By not helping, do you mean physically or mentally (or both)? To the extent you are doing that even every other day, you must be in a pretty good place physically and are not new to exercise. Maybe you just plateaued if you are already in really good shape?

Musk seemed to be a COVID skeptic, but Zuckerberg and many others retreated to isolated areas in Hawaii and New Zealand and seemed personally concerned about the virus.
comment in response to

I agree. I think the political reaction to the 2016 and Russia/misinformation had more to do with it than COVID. The tech executives went from being Steve Jobs-esque heroes that invented amazing products to being viewed as money-hungry people that created products that were causing havoc.

If it is a really good school, why wouldn’t they just expand the zone and close less “in-demand” schools? In the state I live in, when a school is not at full enrollment, kids outside of the zone can also apply, which seems like a better alternative than closing a good school.

I hadn’t thought about this, but I live in an area that probably fits this description. I remember hearing last year that our school’s kindergarten class was small. They kept all 5 teachers, but class sizes were like 12 kids.

The 73.85 figure was per week, so about 10 per day. It’s hard to imagine that many people could survive for an extended period of time consuming 10 drinks per day. I can’t imagine 75 in a day is even humanely possible.
comment in response to

10 drinks a day if you are buying from a grocery store or liquor store is easily achievable for $20. Probably can be done for closer to $10 if you buy cheaper alcohol (whether it be beer, wine or any kind of spirit I can think of).

Yep, that’s the one. The numbers for the top 10 percentile are so high it’s hard to even fathom.
comment in response to

The other chart that is crazy is the one that shows how much on average people in the US drink. My recollection is like the bottom half basically don’t drink. 50th to 90th percentile isn’t that crazy. And above 90th percentile is absolutely crazy. I think it’s like 10 drinks a day or something.

It does seem like NIL is making it much harder to have the incredibly loaded rosters of the pre-NIL/peak SEC era. As the top talent gets more evenly spread out, it probably makes sense to expand the playoffs even more and see what random teams go on runs each year.

Honestly, the same could be said for VA, NC, GA, FL, TX, CA (at least the top 5 publics), WA and probably several other states I’m less familiar with.

But it just depends on the kid and their interests and ability. If they can get into Harvard Law or medical school, that’s almost always going to be a good investment. Many kinds of grad school and country clubs could be a complete waste of money and giving cash later in life is the better option.
comment in response to

From an ROI perspective, if you assume you can spend $400k per kid, it’s interesting to think what the ideal allocation is? I’d lean towards $100k for best in-state public school, and then second $100k for grad school or down payment on house. Maybe then 2 $100k distributions at 32 and 40?

Also, is the goal for the elite network to be for you or your kids? From a networking perspective, private schools and country clubs are arguably better for the parents than the kids, whereas sending a kid to an elite college doesn’t do much for the parents.

I need to ask my kids about their perspective, but Christmas Vacation still seems relatable to me. Christmas Story feels like a period piece from a world that hasn’t existed since before my lifetime.
comment in response to

What were the best funny Christmas movies pre-Christmas Story? As a young kid, I loved it just because it was more fun than the other Christmas movies in rotation in the late 80s/early 90s. Crazy to think it took place like 85 years ago.

For me it was like a before and after moment. Before anti-gay beliefs seemed to be the default position in popular culture and after things started to change quickly. I was also like 12 and Nirvana blew my mind so maybe it was just me.

Yeah, I grew up in the late 80s and early 90s. I remember hearing extremely homophobic statements all the time. It probably sounds stupid, but Cobain expressing support for gay rights was like a cosmic change from Axl Rose and everything before.

After I drop my kid off at school and start driving to work, I drive by a pot shop that I think opens about 15 minutes after I usually drive by it. There’s always a line of at least 5 people waiting for the store to open. I always think to myself who is buying weed at 9:00 am on Monday morning.

I would support this for both gambling and weed. What about also putting limits on the amount you can gamble? Maybe $500 or $1,000 a month? Beyond that point is arguably processed to something more than just entertainment.

I didn’t see any of his fights in his prime and I feel like his pre-jail career in hindsight was brief. I remember him mostly from the Nintendo game and just hearing people in the media talk about him at the time.
