I would argue the Raptors gave them as many breaks as possible with that closing lineup and the Magic refused to take them…

All the times the Raptors have missed that shot over the last few years, of course that one goes down…

I feel like they’re already embracing the lane quite a bit, but the competition just can’t take advantage at all. That’s one starter, a rookie 2nd rounder and three guys who were on 10 Days this year - you’ve gotta put someone out there!

Only in the sense that Demi was winning other awards. She’s good in the Substance but Mikey is incredible in Anora

She’s so incredible in that movie thrilled that she pulled off that upset!

I assume because they aren’t doing the original song performances but if they don’t announce the next Bond at the end of this it seems like a real waste…

Solid ranking! Anora is also my favourite, I think you’re too low on Nickel Boys. Love the movie content.

Yeah that’s just loser talk. Fortunately it’s a copycat league and Florida keeps taking big swings so maybe that will convince Tre to do something

Really enjoy your reviews Sam! Think you’re a little low on Anora but great list. I’m not sure if I could watch Red Rooms even though a lot of people seem to love it (or think it was great).

For sure. The point I was making is more I don’t think they’re well positioned to get the most out of him, so he makes sense to trade because he should have some value. But as part of a package to get someone who moves the needle not because you can do better with less than ~$1 mil.

I like Robertson and don’t get why everyone wants to give him away, but 25% of his point production this season has come in the last 2 games, and if he’s not scoring he’s not really adding a ton of value. He’d be better on a team where he could get more PP time.

Sure, and you want everyone out there playing to be taking it seriously. At the same time, Boucher’s probably helping you win too much at this point, and he’s not part of the long term plan. Give those minutes to one of the young guys and if you still win, oh well.

I mean they aren’t mutually exclusive things. It’s great to see guys playing well and the development is important but also they need more talent and this draft is a huge opportunity to do that.

All of the above?

They can’t really even claim they stay disciplined though, they’re running the 5th highest payroll on a team that doesn’t even project to make the playoffs and they’re going to let their best player (and probably players) walk for nothing.
comment in response to
post
I think they deserve more credit for the Roger’s centre renos than they get (just look at how big a mess Scotiabank arena is), but also they walked into a job with two superstar prospects, haven’t won a playoff game and will probably let them both walk. Total failure.
comment in response to

Running the 5th highest payroll but refusing to pay your best player who is also a homegrown superstar is some real galaxy brain stupidity.

Feels like the problem with this front office is an obsession with looking smart instead of actually winnings games…

Well they’ve done specials for 15, 20 and 40 years already, plus they’ve just got more people to work with from this century. Thought the special was pretty great all things considered.

Yeah anyone that tweeted that should really just hang em up for good, embarrassing stuff
comment in response to

Yeah why is this being positioned as St. Louis might be willing to listen for offers on an objectively bad contract for an aging player who isn’t good? Makes me nervous that the Leafs strategy seems to be literally become the 2019 Blues…
comment in response to

I’m slowly talking myself into it. I think what Bobby said about it being an incremental step vs. a finished product makes sense. They had an opportunity to upgrade talent for minimal cost, they’re a better team today than they were yesterday, set up well for next season.
comment in response to

Can they still use their trade exceptions with the remaining room they have under the tax? Our would someone like Boucher need to go out for them to make another move?
comment in response to

The Leafs don’t have a true blue chip asset, but they can throw a lot of volume. Need Domi to make the money work, but you can add Robertson, one of Minten/Cowan, Niemala and a 1st. I’m not sure Buffalo should do that but I can see why they’d think about it.
comment in response to
post
I can see that. My thought is you didn’t have to be the bad guy, you let the Pelicans handle that (and look cheap), but you have a bit of wiggle room to swoop in, say you really value Ingram but have some constraints to work around, and maybe he feels good about a fresh start.
comment in response to

It is the most divisive trade I can remember - seems like a lot of fans love it, a lot of them hate it. But a good reminder that even in 2-3 years the roster could look very different than it does now.
comment in response to
post
I don’t love the trade for the Raptors, but I do think they’ve got some advantages with the negotiations now. At this point Ingram knows the trade market for him was limited, and there’s no team with the cap space to make him a big offer in free agency. So Toronto has leverage with his bird rights.
comment in response to
post
Yeah I don’t love it. I guess if you get some lottery luck this year, Ingram probably vaults you back into contention pretty quickly. And there’s always a chance you get a decent return for RJ if he is traded. Plus maybe Scottie’s playmaking can really unlock BI? A lot of risk though…
comment in response to
post
That does make it seem more like something New Orleans wants out there than something actually true…
comment in response to
post
Yeah this is what I don’t understand with anyone trying to defend this trade. Luka has already taken them to the finals, he’s already proven he can win at the highest level. It’s not like he’s LaMelo where he has great stats but has never proven he can win…
comment in response to
post
Jak to the Thunder is a fun one if they feel the need to match size with the Mav, but the real galaxy brain trades get RJ to Dallas
comment in response to
post
Yeah fully agree with this. Theres no need to pretend deals that were signed a year ago (Willy, Pasta etc.) are no longer relevant benchmarks for Marner. Everyone has known a cap spike was coming, they don’t suddenly need to pay him $14.5 mil.
comment in response to
post
I honestly think you use the threat of McDavid the next year. You have so much space now, they could easily offer him like $16 mil, though you do need to sort of punt next year which is risky.
comment in response to
post
The focus on % of the cap when the deal was signed is crazy. It’s one thing if you want to use it to compare a contract that is 5+ years old, but the deals signed in the last few years (Pastrnak, Reinhart, Willy etc.) are still relevant benchmarks and you don’t suddenly need to pay Marner 2 mil more
comment in response to
post
I mean I don’t think they’re artificially suppressing anyone’s minutes. Scottie played 33, RJ played 31, IQ was clearly limited in his first game back. They’ve dealt with a ton of injuries all season, no need for starters to play near 40 mins a night.
comment in response to

Taking public transit to the show is great because you can catch that Max Scherzer signing in real time, is he getting a shout out during the set?
comment in response to

Do you think he’ll make it to town in time for Sum 41 and Pup tonight?
comment in response to

The Leafs should actually insist that league sponsors need them to get more power plays truly the only way they might get more calls
comment in response to
post
Sure but they aren’t in any other division. And that’s sort of my point - they’re having a very good season but most of the discourse around them feels negative. I get why fans feel that way, and I think skepticism about their ceiling is warranted, but I also get why the players are annoyed.
comment in response to
post
I sort of think it’s fine for Matthews and Marner to call out the crowd a bit. It was noticeable on the broadcast how quiet the building was. Making it about this staged fight is kind of silly, but also they are first in the division and I get why the mild crowd is frustrating.
comment in response to
post
The league is probably too down on Ingram and would be interesting if the price is low enough, but I don’t love that fit. Plus would immediately create some fit issues with RJ…

I'm not sure how you capably recover from this.
Sasaki was a lifeline to salvage what had already been a bad period ... the Vlad extension stuff looms, farm not in great shape, now Straw gamble ... it's been a rough couple of years of managing.
