RFK really missed the simplest lesson of LBJ’s career, try not to get any kids killed if your name rhymes with “how many kids did you kill today”

The mass firing of both new hires and recently promoted senior staff within #NOAA, including mission-critical and life-saving roles at the National Weather Service (#NWS), is profoundly alarming. 1/11

Fox News just said the U.S. doesn't have anything like China's Belt and Road Initiative, which is hilarious. We did. It was called USAID.

1. Feature, not bug, as stated below 2. There’s zero urgency to do anything they’re doing so there’s no reason to be killing people carelessly, flagrantly 3. It’s sabotage to destroy our country as we know it and to demolish the rationale for taxation as a thing

They’re trying to kill you Or They want you to die Or They think you’re expendable I mean, pragmatically, what’s the difference here, and why should you waste effort figuring out what their problem is instead of just getting rid of these bastards?

The United States is literally for sale

It may not be cool or hip in some circles, but we legitimately do need a massive amount of people to run for office. Flood the school boards, councils, county seats, state legislatures, Congress, etc. Big changes at the top happen when the ground shifts at the bottom. And that can start now.

In a heathy democracy, the WHCA would fight this by boycotting all WH and travel events until the old system was restored. But they’re going to roll over and do whatever it takes to maintain “access” so they can be lied to in comfort

People have to stop expecting Trump breaking a rule or precedent to be what puts an end to this. There are no guardrails, no referees, no institutional block. The only thing that will stop this is a grassroots movement of people organizing to reject an oligarchical takeover. That’s it. Period.

For years, officials in the Czech Republic had pushed a dam project to protect a river south of Prague, and the critically endangered species living in it. But the project stalled. In the meantime, the beavers of Prague simply built dams themselves, saving the government some 1.2 million euros.

People who voted Trump who are feeling pissed off right now about broken promises are an organizing opportunity, not a gloating opportunity

Read the letter of resignation from SDNY AUSA Hagan Scotten, Bronze Star recipient, former clerk to Chief Justice Roberts. Bravo! 👏👏👏

The news getting you down? I invite you to stare at this chart of solar and wind deployed capacity in China. They blew past their ambitious 2030 target... last July.

The water released from two California reservoirs at Trump’s order will likely go to waste, instead of helping Los Angeles with firefighting, experts say

“At a minimum, 300 babies that wouldn’t have had HIV, now do.” Send him to the fucking Hague

I see more criticism here of Democrats in Congress than I do condemnation of Republicans. And yet it is the GOP who are enabling Trump. It tells me a lot when I see you regularly bash our side but say nothing, ever, about the other. Reflect on your choices. You may be helping the fascists.

There's something fundamentally wrong with the editorial management of the NYT and WaPo when the right-of-Atilla the Hun editorial page of Murdoch's WSJ correctly describes what happened today, while those other papers couch it as Trump winning 'concessions' from Canada and Mexico.

The federal government *regularly* spends money to encourage behavior it couldn’t compel directly. Like paying states to build roads or fund healthcare for those who can’t afford it. It’s called the Spending Clause—and it’s the very first enumerated power that the Constitution gives to Congress. 🤦🏻‍♂️

What opposition?

Fire debris on the beach in Santa Monica today…

This matters. Not because I think Trump is capable of mercy or empathy towards these vulnerable groups. But because it is a public act of defiance. Contrast that with all these other powerful people in this country signaling nothing but appeasement and obedience.

In less than 24 hours, gay marriage will become legal in Thailand; in less than 48, marriage registration will start.

This is how we must do it.

Now that Trump is in office he's immediately pivoted from "the President is responsible for anything bad that happens in the world" to "Me? That's not my problem."

I think this is one of my favourite colourful climate chart type things, because it depicts two things at once: - Things are going to get worse, no matter what - The degree to which they get worse depends on decisions made today theconversation.com/my-new-dark-... by @edhawkins.org

TikTok shares new message.

Buried, amid the more immediate casualties and clearly visible damage of modern wildfire disasters, are the far more numerous victims of the secondary harms and "chronic emergencies" that subsequently unfold for months and years thereafter.

To help robots execute open-ended, multi-step chores, MIT CSAIL researchers used vision models to see what’s near the machine & model its constraints. An LLM sketches up a plan that’s checked in a simulator to ensure it’s safe & realistic, potentially aiding household robots: bit.ly/3ZNJWXj

Red Note is genuinely a blast, the cross-cultural exchange going on is one of the most wholesome things I’ve seen in years

Elon Musk is on track to become the world’s first trillionaire. Imagine if his wealth was capped at $999M, and we taxed the rest (~$239B). We could: End homelessness: $20B End hunger: $40B annually to 2030 Build homes: 710K new homes at $308K each A trillion for one or a future for all?

Brilliant:

[werner herzog voice] the looney tunes are an abomination. the little bald man shoots the duck in the face but he lives. the coyote is crushed by many anvils, and yet he continues. these unnatural beings cannot die - and without death, what is the value of life itself?

The original Wizard of Oz is a fantastical story about a young girl who is transported to a magic land where she immediately murders two brutal dictators completely on accident and I think that's beautiful. what if a Mr. Bean movie was willing to take you outside of your moral comfort zone

Hard to overstate just how much of the tech industry’s horrifically dystopian present grew right out of its transparently misogynistic past
