Mandatory high school civics class that isn’t just like “how a bill becomes law” or whatever but also “how NOAA powers your phone’s weather app” and “NIH helped make your asthma inhaler”

What has DOGE done? - Fired the people tasked with keeping Americans safe from the bird flu. - Gutted the IRS workforce during filing season. - Fired the FAA workers who make sure it’s safe for us to fly in planes. Does that sound like efficiency to you?

On the heels of @felixarntz.bsky.social's WP 6.8 Dev Note yesterday and @tunetheweb.com's implementation guide posted today, I wrote up how to extend Speculative Loading in WordPress to enable more instant page loads:

Just like 18F, the people behind @altusds.bsky.social partnered with government agencies to deliver critical services for the American people: finding baby formula during a shortage, applying for financial aid, getting veterans’ benefits. They shared our story on their website, We the Builders.

Tall athletes have a biological advantage when it comes to basketball but no one wants to kick Wemby out the NBA.

Being a historian, people ask me if I think the US is living through Germany 1933. I answer no, analogies are always imperfect but to me it feels more like Russia 1999: a blatant theft of state assets and liberals in a fugue state, refusing to believe the arc of progress is bending against them.

You can now read about projects that were interrupted when 18F was disbanded. One of them was with the Federal Voting Assistance Program (FVAP), which ensures military service members and Americans overseas are able to vote, and that their votes are counted. 18f.org/projects/#fe...

Raskin: "So I assume if you really want to proceed to censure the gentleman from Texas for talking about no mandate to cut Medicaid, then certainly we're going to have to move to censure the President for using a racial and ethnic slur against a sitting United States Senator."

So where is the line?

Gender disparities in the WordPress industry continues to be the regrettable reality that we need to reckon with.

"They'll never cut Social Security" is the new "they'll never overturn Roe v Wade."

McGovern: I'm sorry, who was it, who yelled "You lie" at President Obama during his address? A Republican. Who was it that heckled President Biden standing up and ranting like lunatics? Republicans. And nothing was done about that.

McGovern: Are they ready to censure the Republican member who got caught voting from California last month, which is a violation of the house rules? He wasn't even in the chamber. Hell, he wasn't even on the east coast. Of course not. Because their outrage is all B.S

I have been saying the exuberance around LLM agents is primarily due to the ultra subsidized prices. The flaws are worth it when they’re 1/10th the price of an expert human. But $10k/mo is the same if not more than the cost of an expert human in LCOL areas (Canada, Midwest, South America, etc).

Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT.) introduced a resolution demanding the immediate reinstatement of the 6,000 veterans fired from federal government jobs in a sweeping workforce reduction, but Sen. Jerry Moran (R-KS.) quickly objected. www.stripes.com/veterans/202... #Flashes

New Republican Plan: The best thing we can do right now is hide from our constituents.

The state of the union is that the President is spitting in the face of the law. He is letting an unelected billionaire fire cancer researchers and wreck federal agencies like the Social Security Administration at will. I won't be attending tomorrow's Joint Address.

She’s right. That’s exactly the plan. That’s why they’re speed running all of these agency destructions, to get them done before anybody can stop them. The courts need to act faster.

love this @rokhanna.bsky.social We need more proposals like this that co-opt the chaos Please share off line as well !!!

As someone who spends a lot time thinking about the values I want to teach my kid (besides PLEASE DON’T EAT DIRT), the thing I keep coming back to is this: I want him to believe that the strongest, bravest thing he can do is give a shit about other people—especially ones who aren’t like him at all.

Vibe Coding is real. I don’t like being alarming, but if you’re a developer and not jumping on the AI train yet, you’re in trouble. Today, for the first time, I really felt a 10x boost in my own productivity.

Democrats hold the line. Do NOT agree to fund DOGE.

An NPR review of new data added to DOGE's "wall of receipts" finds the group quietly changed previous errors, added new ones and still has little verified savings to show for its work.

You should know that a big part of 18F's work was to make sure multi-million to multi-*hundreds*-of-millions dollar contracts at fed *and* state level didn't go to shitty enterprise IT consultancies that *repeatedly* delivered tech that didn't work, was late, or didn't even do what it needed to

Everywhere I’ve ever been, you could always just walk in whatever bathrooms there were. It’s not like they card at the door. The social stigma against being a creepy pest is all that ever stopped you, and that doesn’t change because trans people exist and need to use the bathroom sometimes.

They’re scrubbing every sign of decency from the record. Anything that helps the public must be erased, denied, forgotten. Compassion, above all, is to be rubbed out.

A reminder for these times.

18F charged other government agencies for their work, helped transform the teams they worked with to prevent future contracting boondoggles, and are, like, *the* team you would point out if you wanted better tech outcomes in government. 🚶

An absolute shame. 18F does foundational, scalable, useful work that millions of US citizens ended up using every day. I’m sorry for the employees caught up in this.

"Amazon deliveries." This is Jason Calacanis, a venture capitalist & prominent Musk toady. And he does not know a big percentage of Amazon deliveries are made by the USPS. I will never get over how stupid the people at the top of US society are.

StellarWP cut my position today for budgetary reasons. If you know of a role that might be good for me, please send it my way. I’m specifically looking in marketing and community. Thank you! (No hate to Stellar or the folks there. These things suck, but they happen.)
