Still wild to me that so many "savvy" folks on left and right have bought into the idea that online misinformation is overblown and doesn't really matter. From lies about migrants to transgender people to crime to election denial to climate denial, it's literally driving our country's politics.

"Misinformation isn’t going to disappear. We’re still going to be here, working against that". A powerful quote from a member of our team in this Guardian interview, reflecting on their work and Meta’s decision to end the third-party fact checking programme in the US.

2025 is like It’s A Wonderful Life except it stays Pottersville

My marine biologist son Rob has lived on the same island for 7 years, doing painstaking work to improve biodiversity and train local people in conservation. Here’s a new video. Nothing dramatic (he’s not Attenborough and doesn’t have a film crew). Just a healthy coral reef: youtu.be/2wlk-yfYi9Q?...

Candace Owens, who previously revealed to us with firm conviction that Joseph Stalin was secretly Jewish and Brigitte Macron is actually a man, has now discovered that President Zelensky is a "homosexual".

I like Tortoise, and initially when I heard this news I was in support of the sale. Listening to Observer staff since however has changed my position and I fully support and offer them full solidarity.

Why Ridley Scott’s 2005 Crusader flop is a far superior film to Gladiator

The most talked-about moment in women’s soccer last year, and indeed for the past several years, wasn’t a goal, nor a piece of skill, nor anything that happened during a match. It was an unwanted kiss given by a then-federation president to one of the game’s biggest stars.

Metro is today launching This Is Not Right, a 12-month campaign addressing the relentless epidemic of violence against women, that aims to both engage and empower our readers

All this talk of how BlueSky is just a liberal comfort zone but over on the other place, former cabinet ministers are getting hyped about a petition to re-run the general election.

Difficult to describe what a dangerous moment we are in. The owner of Twitter/richest man in the world/closest adviser to the next US president is promoting a far-right Tommy Robinson (!) documentary to his 200 million followers. This is the mainstreaming of violent, Islamophobic fascism.

Disinformation Campaigns have all of these 6 elements: 1) Actors who have 2) Incentives to disseminate 3) Intentionally misleading messages through 4) Selected communication channels to 5) Specifically targeted vulnerable audiences for 6) Exploitation youtu.be/cHlHCNVSf7Y?...

Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance 🏳️‍⚧️. As we remember those who have lost their lives due to transphobia, I wanted to share this moving article by Gabe Gabriel, which shows what can happen when we treat our trans siblings with kindness and acceptance. metro.co.uk/2024/09/27/t...

In the past 24 hours, Nancy Mace has tweeted about Trans women in bathrooms over 120 times from her two Twitter accounts. Not 12 times…120 times. Including this incredibly thirsty tag of JK Rowling.

There are few bigger crimes that will never be framed as crimes as this. www.euronews.com/green/2024/1...

My admiration for this woman knows no bounds

More than 70% of UK women say they’ve experienced sexual harassment in public spaces & over 95% of women aren’t reporting it because they don’t believe it will change anything. 📊 Learn more about Right to Move, a campaign to help women feel safer in public spaces. ⬇️ www.bigissue.com/opinion/un-w...

I know it feels so natural to blame this on ‘shitty journalism’, but if more people realised just how dire the journalism industry is right now, they might understand how clickbait has become necessary so important journalism can be funded. I’ve never met a journo who likes these headlines.

Tech analysts in the Observer today are suggesting that X will merge with Trump's Truth Social Obviously it already feels like that's happened in some senses. But a formal merger would solidify X's formal status as an explicitly hard/far-right platform

Hello BlueSky! I’m Jeremy, a journalist and campaigner on social justice issues for NGOs from London. I used to work as a travel journalist, photographer and filmmaker - so expect a lot of that content as I revisit my backlog.

Just got back from a beautiful trip to Egypt, so only fitting that my first post here should be a photo I took of the sunset on the Nile. Hoping for a more positive social media experience here 🙏

I really don’t understand this whole ‘stay on Twitter and fight’ thing. You’re jousting with bots and reply guys and wading through ads it’s not Waterloo.
