:me looking into the campfire, seeing something from long ago, about to do The Tell to the younglings dressed in tatters around me: "Well you see, some folks got real mad they made ladies Ghostbusters this one time and now all the groundwater is radioactive."

Former Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin (R) sent his adopted son to an abusive youth facility in Jamaica, then abandoned him when the place was raided and shut down. Allegations of water boarding, etc. That’s just the start. Jonah Bevin just turned 18 in a shelter: kentuckylantern.com/2025/02/28/i...

If you live in #Vermont, you should know that our "moderate" GOP governor Phil Scott just welcomed Putin shill neo-Nazi Vance to our state and urged Vermonters to do likewise. Feel free to tell him he's a weasel by calling 802 828-3333

"Let's shag ass."

if there is one overused cliched and frankly completely dumbass phrase that I am ready to block more than any other, it's the "face-eating leopard" bullshit. I would just block the word "leopard" except for the tiny chance of eliminating any interesting BRINGING UP BABY discussions.

y'all would not *believe* the shit that went down at Vince Lombardi High School in southern California after they hired a woman principal.

Released the same year. Nobody better.

wait no this is good we should do this everywhere he goes

A lot of people confuse writing with typing. Writing isn’t typing. It’s the entire process and yes that includes going for a walk or rearranging things in your office.

💥 BREAKING: At John Deere's annual shareholders meeting today, shareholders overwhelmingly rejected an anti-DEI proposal brought by the same group that targeted Costco and Apple. An anti-DEI proposal from the NCPPR received less than 1 percent of votes. Deere shareholders: DEI is in. Bigots are out

I still don’t understand why Democrats would negotiate a budget when the Trump administration claims unilateral authority to cancel any spending it dislikes. As long as congressional Republicans endorse that position, they are not legitimate negotiation partners! An agreement with them has no value!

I was going to start a Substack and then I found this out - Substack is platforming and paying Nazis. I originally thought it was only a host as well! Can't support that. We left Twitter, so writers can leave Substack too. I've recently heard good things about Ghost - low fees, good SEO.👻

headache exchange program where you can give your headache to someone who wants to get out of plans

i feel like the spirit of 'no cops at pride' extends to 'no ICE at motherfucking mardi gras you goddamned ghouls[derogatory]'

The 1923 Oregon legislature was colloquially known as the "Klan legislature" because the majority of members were either Klan members or sympathizers. One bill they passed required that history education be suitably patriotic, outlawing materials that spoke "slightingly" of the founders.

because part of this ongoing NEA conversation is shouting out who is doing things right: Milagro is great and has always been great

I can’t compete with this

getting some good rain so you know what that means- time for the wastewater management sickos to fire up the big pipe tracker. follow along at home folks, it's fun. updates every 15 min. my money is on big pipe www.portland.gov/bes/big-pipe...

I once wrote an episode of Adam Ruins Everything where he said that IQ is a bad measure of actual mental ability. It got some of the most wild, furious responses online. There are people who base their entire world view on a relatively meaningless number

I don't care how good the info is, if it's on Substack, I'm not reading it, because I don't need their engine to feed me to Nazis and feed me Nazi thoughts. You can have a different opinion. This is mine. It is immutable.

Dear manager, 1. Software. 2. I'm looking for software. 3. I gotta have software. 4. For my machine. 5. And a lawnmower can do all that ... it's amazing! Telling the truth can be dangerous business.

I found it, the perfect movie review.

One of my favorite recent additions to #MardiGras is the #KreweOfBhanGras, a dance crew heavily influenced by Bollywood. They’re also in #Muses & #Iris.

No one told me we would have daffodils in our yard here in February (and I didn't even do anything to encourage it, it just appeared!)

This is the most wretched campaign of deliberate, explicit persecution the United States has perpetrated against a minority group in decades. Many of the most important people in politics and journalism are busying themselves trying to figure out how little to say or do about it.

One odd thing I saw while reporting this measles outbreak: A CDC template advising principals to keep unvaccinated kids home for 21 days if they're exposed appears to be missing. Details in my latest story @kffhealthnews.org / @sfchronicle.com www.sfchronicle.com/health/artic...

Gov. Mills tells Trump to his face that Maine will not be bullied into complying with his anti-transgender order. “We’re going to follow the law sir. We’ll see you in court,” she said. mainemorningstar.com/2025/02/21/g...

Free advice for the Cincinnati/NKY film commission: If you want major cultural events in the city, push back against bullshit like this.

For all the USPS's faults, Americans have to realize: It's one of the best postal services in the world, even after being kneecapped by DeJoy. Fight for our postal service, guys. I know I will. It is an essential public good.

YT algorithm: hmm based on your viewing history, perhaps you would like to watch this low-quality but still amazing video circa 1982 of Tim Curry performing the Pirate King number from Pirates of Penzance? me: WHAAAAAT yes. wife (next room): you ok in there? me: yeah probably

While you were writing your anti-woke screed about the excesses of language guides issued by the Stanford University IT department, the state of Texas was moving to pass laws to force all teachers — even in blue cities —to misgender and deadname trans kids. www.texastribune.org/2025/02/17/t...

It continues to do my head in that some of my favorite writing by my favorite people is only available via fucking Substack.

Can't shake the desire to rewatch great Lubitsch pre-Code movies like THE SMILING LIEUTENANT and TROUBLE IN PARADISE and no one has them streaming. Or Blu-ray. (I do have DESIGN FOR LIVING.) I see March streaming previews and think, "All I wanted was just one Pepsi and they wouldn't give it to me."

“It never feels patronizing or like it’s talking down to its audience. It has a big, beating heart.”

I taught a college course on writing and research methods and the only lesson I wanted my students to learn was ASK A LIBRARIAN. They have the answers or ability to ask others with answers to so many things and they provide source material. Answers not being wrong is kinda important!

Some observations I had at the TX Capitol protest yesterday. 1) A fascist in a pink suit from Infowars or some other fash site provoking people. A lot of people arguing with him and a hero in a trans flag trolling the fash.

Translation of @markwarner.bsky.social: “to win elections, we have got to get more racist and transphobic.” Senator Warner, I am so very ready to vote for whoever primaries you.

I know I post about this a lot BUT! Univ of Texas explicitly adopted standardized testing post-Brown v Board in order to keep the number of Black students they admitted as low as possible. They wrote about it so we know. The school admitted to it a few years back.
